ATHENS, June 14 -- Greek Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi was among the big winners here at the 19th International Filothei Women's Athletics Gala on Wednesday.
Stefanidi won with a jump of 4.60 meters with Silva Yarisley from Cuba coming in second (4.50m).
With the exclusive participation of female athletes, the annual track and field meeting is held in the Filothei district of Athens and is organized by the local sports club in association with the Greek Athletics Association (SEGAS). The event attracts Greek champions, but also several top international stars.
In the high jump, Spencer Lavern from Saint Lucia finished first after clearing 1.96m.
"It is a fact that women's sport is constantly on the rise in Greece and leads to many distinctions. This event is an advertisement for the great athletes of our country, while allowing young children to participate along with top stars. I hope that the meet will continue and develop further," said Xenia Argeitaki, the vice-president of SEGAS.
