  A

A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity(肥胖) rates. The study of 8,179 was reported in the British Medical Journal.

Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarian-although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.

Men who were vegetarian had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for nonvegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for nonvegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but reported eating fish or chicken.

Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically(统计地)significant after adjusting for these factors.

Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or professional qualifications than nonvegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of nonvegetarians.

Lead researcher Catharine Gale said,“The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians than adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (冠心病) in adult life.”

But Dr Frankie Phillips, of the British Dietetic Association, said:“It_is_like_the_chicken_and_the_egg. Do people become vegetarian because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?”

56.What's the result of the research mentioned in the text?

B.Children with a higher IQ are less likely to have heart disease later in life.

C.Intelligent children tend to belong to higher social class later in life.

D.Children with a healthier heart tend to have a higher IQ later in life.

根据第一段中的“people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points higher on average at the age of 10”知A项正确。根据“it could explain why...” 故选A项。]

57.It was found in the research that________.

A.most of the participants became vegetarians 20 years after the IQ tests were carried out

B.vegetarians who ate fish or chicken were of similar intelligence with strict vegetarians

C.female vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than nonvegetarians

  A.doubtful

A.Intelligence is linked to not just being a vegetarian but to many factors.

B.The rate of getting heart disease is linked to your lifestyle.

C.The link between a high IQ and being a vegetarian is still uncertain.

D.The link between a healthy heart and diet remains to be proved.

  B

About 84% of people have mental health problems and a third of the UK general public feels isolated, according to a new report.

The charity Mind says young people are most likely to feel disconnected from society, whether they have mental health problems or not.

It blames lack of relationships, absence of support and discrimination for feelings of social exclusion.

The charity is calling for government action on the problem.

Surveys of 532 Mind members and 964 members of the general public showed people living in rural communities and from black and ethnic communities were also more susceptible to isolation.Feelings of social exclusion was most common among people with mental health problems and often contributed to their illness.

Of the Mind members surveyed, 80% said isolation made it harder for them to recover or cope with their mental health problems.

Many blamed relationship problems or lack of close relationships stemming from their mental health problems as a top cause of isolation.

Unemployment, lack of money and lack of support services also featured highly.

Ready use of a telephone was mentioned most often as the support used to help overcome isolation.

Mind said many people with mental health problems were condemned to a life of social segregation because of avicious cycle of isolation, worsened by stigma and prejudice.

Chief executive Richard Brook said:“Most people already know that it's good to talk, but when you're in mental distress it isn't always that simple. If the crucial links are missing, things can go downhill rapidly.”

He urged the government to take the lead in providing better social support for those at risk.

Cities and states with more sidewalks and bike paths tend to have slimmer residents than locations where people must rely on vehicle transportation, according to a new study published on August 20.

The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, adds to the mounting evidence showing active travel has significant health benefits, said Bassett, one of the researchers.“People who live in areas that are more conducive to walking and cycling are more likely to engage in these forms of active transport.”

Bassett and his colleagues analyzed data from all 50 US states and 47 largest US cities, along with international data from 14 countries. While the international data included the percentage of all trips taken by walking and cycling, they also looked at overall physical activity, obesity(肥胖) and diabetes(糖尿病).

Results showed that walking and cycling rates could explain more than half of the differences in obesity rates among countries, and about 30 percent of the difference in obesity rates among cities and states.

The US doesn't measure up well in the study, coming in at No. 12 out of 14 on percentage of trips adults take by bike or on foot. Australia came in last, though that data looked at percentage of work trips that were active, not total trips.

“European countries with high rates of walking and cycling have less obesity than do Australia and countries in North America that are highly cardependent,”said the researchers.

The researchers suggest that in addition to infrastructure(基础设施) improvements, cities and states should limit car use.

Why do some people flush when they drink alcohol(酒)?This effect is a common reaction to alcohol among East Asians. It affects about 36 percent of Japanese,Chinese and Koreans.

For many, even a small amount of alcohol can cause unpleasant effects. Most commonly, their face, neck and sometimes their whole body turn red.People might also feel uncomfortable and sick to their stomach. They might experience a burning sensation, increased heart rate, shortness of breath and headaches.

The cause is a genetic difference that they are born with called an ALDH2 deficiency(缺乏).It prevents their bodies from treating alcohol the way other people do.But the effects might be more serious than just a red face.Researchers warn of a link between this condition and an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus(食道) from drinking alcohol.

The more alcohol people with this deficiency drink, the greater their risk is.In Japan and South Korea, for example, many people have the deficiency but still drink heavily.Researchers found that these drinkers develop a form of esophageal cancer six to ten times more often than those without the deficiency.

Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It can be treated when found early, but once it grows the chances of survival drop sharply. The researchers estimate that at least five hundred forty million people have the deficiency, about eight percent of the world's population.

Philip Brooks is a researcher at the National Institute in the United States. He says it is important to educate people about the link between the alcohol flushing effect and esophageal cancer. He says doctors should ask East Asian patients about their experiences with facial flushing after drinking alcohol. Those with a history of it should be advised to limit their alcohol use. They should also be warned that cigarette smoking works with the alcohol in a way that further increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

  Dear Jimmy,

I'm delighted to learn that you have moved to a new city. But recently I heard that you used all the rest time to surf the internet after class.

Since you are in a new place, all the things are strange to you. It doesn't mean that you can close the door to live by yourself. Indeed you'd better go out to make more friends, and in this way,you can know the place better. Besides, in the morning you can get up earlier to do morning exercises, breathe the fresh morning air. It is helpful to a day of study. On weekends, you can play basketball with your friends to relax mood. Mountain climbing is a good type of movement. There must be many interesting places worth traveling. Don't miss the good time to enjoy the good scenery and kindhearted people.

Computer is a cold machine. Why not go for a picnic with your classmates to enjoy the warm sunshine?

Wish your life be more colourful and healthy.

  Sincerely yours

  Li Hua
