A
Americans are famous for being friendly to people. Their friendships, however, tend to be shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other “friends” to be just social acquaintances This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans dislike to be dependent on other people. They tend to “compartmentalize” (划分)
friendships, having “friends at work” “friends on the softball team”“family friends” and so forth.
Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly_charged atmosphere, Americans sometimes seem abrupt (无礼的) or impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. Sometimes, they ask you questions that you may feel very personal. No insult is intended; the questions usually grow out of their true interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you don’t understand certain American behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything “American” in which you may be interested. They explain so much in fact that you may become tired of listening. It doesn’t matter because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during a conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for instance, than deal with silence.
On the other hand, don’t expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United States is geographically distant from many other nations, some Americans tend not to be aware of what goes on in other parts of the world.
1.According to the passage, Americans’ attitude towards friendship is________.
A.it is unusual to have only one close friend
B.more informal than that in other countries
C.to regard all friends as only social acquaintances
D.to divide friends into several grades

A.extremely expensive
B.much cheerful
C.highly responsible
D.full of mobility and change
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Americans know a lot about international affairs.
B.Friendships among Americans tend to be more formal.
C.Americans always seem to be on the move.
D.Americans like to cooperate with other people.
由文章第二段首句中的“...people always seem to be on the go”可知答案。]
4.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.Americans want to take part in all kinds of activities
B.curiosity is the major characteristic of Americans
C.Americans do not know how to deal with silence
D.Americans’ characters are influenced by their social and geographical environments
由文章第一段第四句“This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans dislike to be dependent on other people”可知,美国人对待友谊的态度可能与美国人的流动性以及他们不喜欢依赖别人有关。
B
After graduation I returned home to my small town in Indiana. I didn’t have a job yet. Mr. Hobbs,a friend of my father’s,owned a small shirt factory in town. Within the past five years it had grown from twenty to eighty workers. Hobbs was worried that his plant was getting too big and inefficient,so he asked me to come in on a shortterm basis as a consultant.
I went to the plant and spent about a week looking around and making notes. I was really amazed at what I saw.
Most curious of all, there was no quality control at all. No one inspected the final product of the factory. As a result some of the shirts that were put in boxes for shipment were missing one or two buttons, the collar, and even a sleeve sometimes!
The working conditions were poor. The tables where the workers sat were very high and uncomfortable. Except for a half hour at lunchtime, there were no breaks in the day to relieve the boring work. There was no music. The walls of the workrooms were a dull gray color. I was amazed that the workers hadn’t gone on strike.
Furthermore, the work flow was irregular. There was one especially absentminded young man in the assembly (组装) line who sewed on buttons. After a while I recognized him as “Big Jim”,who used to sit behind me in math class in high school. He was very slow and all the shifts were held up at his position. Workers beyond him in line on his shift had to wait with nothing to do;therefore,a great deal of time and efficiency were lost as Big Jim daydreamed while he worked. All week I wondered why he wasn’t fired.
After I made observations for a week,Mr. Hobbs asked me for an oral report of my findings.
5.The shirts from Mr. Hobbs’ factory can be described as________.
A.of low quality
B.of high quality
C.fashionable
D.unfashionable
6.Why did Mr. Hobbs ask the writer to the factory?
A.The factory was too big.
B.The factory was not producing fast enough.
C.The factory was not big enough.
D.The writer was a college graduate.
7.Which is NOT likely to happen in the factory?
A.The workers will have more rest in the day.
B.Someone will examine the final product.
C.New machines will be bought.
D.The factory will be repainted.
8.Big Jim may get fired mainly because________.
A.he was slow
B.he wasted much time
C.he was absentminded
D.the work flow was irregular
