There was great excitement on the planet of Venus(金星).Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.
The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan, named after the great Venusian astronomer Professor Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago.
Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals,Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to feasibility(可行性) of a manned flying saucer landing on Earth.A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.
“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing,” Prof.Zog said,“that there is no life on Earth.”
“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the VenusEveningStar asked.
“For one thing,Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is made up of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”
“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”
“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us,which means a much heavier flying saucer than originally planned.”
“Are there any other dangers that you discovered in your studies?”
“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud hovering(盘旋) over the surface of Earth. We don’t know what it is made of,but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”
“Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicate it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer.”
“If all you say is true, won’t this set back the flying saucer program several years?”
“Yes,but we shall continue as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds,” Professor.Zog replied.

Does everyone want a challenging job?In spite of all the attention focused by the media, academicians, and social scientists on human potential and the needs of individuals, there is no evidence to support that the vast majority of workers want challenging jobs. Some individuals prefer highly complex and challenging jobs;others develop in simple, routine work.
The individual-difference variable(变量) that seems to gain the greatest support for explaining who prefers a challenging job and who doesn’t is the strength of an individual’s needs for personal growth and self-direction at work.Individuals with these higher-order growth needs are more responsive for challenging work. What percentage of ordinary workers actually desire higher-order need satisfaction and will respond positively to challenging jobs?No current data is available, but a study from the 1970s estimated the figure at about 15%.Even after adjusting for changing work attitudes and the growth in white-collar jobs,it seems unlikely that the number today exceeds 40%.
The strongest voice advocating challenging jobs has not been workers—it’s been professors, social science researchers, and media people.Professors, researchers, and journalists undoubtedly made their career choices,to some degree, because they wanted jobs that gave them autonomy, recognition and challenge. That,of course,is their choice. But for them,to force their needs onto the workforce in general is presumptuous(冒昧的).
Not every employee is looking for a challenging job. Many workers meet their higher-order need off the job. There are 168 hours in every individual’s week.Work rarely consumes more than 30% of this time. That leaves considerable opportunities, even for individuals with strong growth needs,to find higher-order need satisfaction outside the workplace. So don’t feel you have a responsibility to create challenging jobs for all your employees. For many people, work is something that will never excite or challenge them. And they don’t expect to find their growth opportunities at work.Work is merely something they have to do to pay their bills. They can find challenges outside of work on the golf course, fishing,at their local pub, with their friends in social clubs, with their family, and the like.

Mrs.Obama spoke to the graduates of Martin Luther King Jr.High School on Saturday in her only high school commencement(毕业典礼)speech this year. The ceremony took place in the gymnasium of Tennessee State University.
The first lady told the 170 graduates that she spent too much of her time in college focusing on academe achievements. While her success in college and law school led to a good job,she said, she ended up focusing on public service.“My message to you today is that don’t waste a minute living someone else’s dream,” she said.“It takes a lot of real work to discover what brings you joy and you won’t find what you love simply by checking mailboxes or surfing the net.”
She said MLK reminded her of her own high school experience in Chicago.“My No.1 goal was to go to a high school that would push me and challenge me,” she said.“I wanted to go somewhere that would celebrate achievement.Unfortunately, schools like this don’t exist for every kid,” she said.“You are blessed.”
The first lady told graduates that failure may be a part of their college lives and careers, and that how they respond determines what they will become.“That’s when you find out what you’re really made of in those hard times,” she said.“But you can only do that if you’re willing to put yourself in position where you might fail.” Overcoming difficulties has been the mark of many great people, she said,“Oprah was demoted(降职)from her first job as a news reporter, and now she doesn’t even need a last name,” she said of media giant Oprah Winfrey “And then there’s this guy Barack Obama,I could take up a whole afternoon talking about his failures. He lost his first race for Congress,”the first lady joked,“and now he gets to call himself my husband.”

The adder(蝰蛇)is the only poisonous snake native to Britain.Adders have the most highly developed poison injecting mechanism of all snakes, but they are not aggressive animals.Adders will only use their poison as a last means of defence, usually if caught or trodden on.No one has died from adder bites in Britain for over 20 years.By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland,in fact, there are no other snakes at all.The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite.It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all.
Most people regard snake bites as a fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal.Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures.
All snakes have small teeth,so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger.British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened,as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally,or if you try to catch it or pick it up,which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming,it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can,but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close.
The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be,which is why children suffer far more seriously from snakebites in Britain, and thought these bites can make some people very ill,and there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect,as there are of serious illness.

TheImportanceofAccessibilityAwareness
At a recent Teen Leadership of Jewish Family Service meeting, people with disabilities talked about their lives.36 However, what amazed me most was the great importance of education about handicap accommodations(残疾人便利设施).
One school teacher who is blind, and a woman who has used a wheelchair all her life are two important members of the National Group for Disabled Persons, devoted to raising awareness about disabilities.37 These include handicap parking spots, handrails, and wheelchair ramps. One big concern is the people who take advantage of aids, such as handicap parking spaces.38 And the meeting focused on educating the public.
Some handicap spots have extra room next to them, marked with the “No Parking” signs.“As long as I’m not in the spot,I can take the no-parking area next to it,”some people say. However, the woman who uses a wheelchair disagrees to this. The space exists to allow someone in a wheelchair to have room to get in or out of their car.39
Some walkways have handrails next to them to help those who require extra assistance.Whether it is a blind person seeking guidance or an elderly person seeking support, the rail is there for walking.Sometimes the rail is blocked,by a parked bicycle for instance, and consequently made useless.40 People who are informed of the rail’s use would be less likely to mistake it for a bike rack.Meeting some of the people who are affected by lack of education about accommodations made me see that there is work to be done.If more people were educated about the proper uses of accommodations, there would be fewer challenges for people with physical disabilities.
A.Accommodations will vary according to the needs of the disabled.
B.As with the parking spot, this is more likely a case of lack of education.
C.They educate about all the accommodations for people with disabilities.
D.Improvement must be made so that disabled people can fully participate.
E.If there is a car in that space, the handicap parking spot is no longer useful.
F.So people without disabilities need to be educated about these accommodations.
G.I was amazed to hear about the challenges faced by people with physical disabilities.

62at 考查介词。这里用stareat表示“盯着……看”。
63screaming 考查非谓语动词。本空所在句子的两个动词return和scream之间没有连词,因此本空用动词-ing作伴随状语。

Dear Headmaster,
I am writing to talk about the canteen of our school. There are only a few stand in the canteen, leading to lots of students have to line up for food.It is waste of time, isn’t it?But at times the food is not fresh and does not taste deliciously. So it’s not surprising that some students chose to go to the street to buy junk food which do harm to their health.Would you think about that how to improve it?I would appreciate you if you could take some measures.Hopefully,my opinion can be taken to account.

Recently there has been a heated discussion among students about whether it’s necessary to have spoken English tests in middle schools. 答案:
Recently there has been a heated discussion among students about whether it’s necessary to have spoken English tests in middle schools.
As far as I know, most of my classmates can read English aloud fluently and only a few of us find it difficult to read long words correctly. Some of them are lacking in confidence when speaking English in public.
I strongly believe it a necessity to hold a test of spoken English in middle schools because students will have more time and opportunities to practice their listening and speaking in English classes. What’s more, the ability to speak fluent English will bring us a wide variety of chances. We could become successful applicants for some posts by talking directly to experts from English-speaking countries in the future.
Whether I’ll take the test or not,I will spare no effort on my spoken English.
