  A

  C

The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid_we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.

However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus,a lizard (蜥蜴)native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we,d need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate w hitting. ’’

But fortunately there is an alternative :cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot),you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子)in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick Liquid of cornflour.

Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink_and take a shower afterward!

44.Walking on water hasn’t become a reality mainly because humans______.

  A.are not interested in it

  B.have biological limitations

  C.have not invented proper tools

D.are afraid to make an attempt

45.What do we know about Basilicus basilicus from the passage?

A.It is light enough to walk on water.

B.Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.

C.It can run across water at a certain speed.

D.Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water.

46.What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?

  A.To create a thick liquid.

B.To turn the water into solid.

C.To help the liquid behave normally.

D.To enable the water to move rapidly.

47.What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of humans’ walking on water?

  A.It is risky but beneficial.

B.It is interesting and worth trying.

IC.t is crazy and cannot become a reality.

D.It is impractical though theoretically possible.

  A

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent梒hild activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue mint0 adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

  41. The underlined word gulf in Para.3 most probably means _________.

  A. interest

  B. distance

  C. difference

  D. separation

  42. Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?

  A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

  B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.

  C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.

  D. Parents share more interests with their children.

  43. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _________.

  A. more confusion among parents

  B. new equality between parents and children

C.1ess respect for parents from children

  D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents

  44. By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side.” the author means that today’s parents _________.

  A. follow the trend of the change

  B. can set a limit to the change

  C. fail to take the change seriously

  D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change

  45. The purpose of the passage is to _________.

  A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with

  B. discuss the development of the parent—child relationship

  C. suggest the ways to handle the parent—child relationship

  D. compare today’s parent—child relationship with that in the past

We simply weigh too much, and all our mass push down through our relatively small feet.

The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward。

46.A 推理题。根据文章第三段第2,3行:you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now ,if the surface of the water is hit hard enough … 故A正确。

Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice。

1.By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water(and it does take a lot), you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water.

同时本句中有一个定语从句that doesn’t behave like normal water.

2.Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice.

Fun though all this may sound是一个形式倒装,相当于一个让步状语从句Though all this may sound fun。
