  21. A

  a variety of“各种各样的”;a kind/sort of“一种”;a type of“一种类型的”。

  22. D

  series of前面和a连用,意思是“一连串的,一系列的”;all kinds后加of,意思是“各种各样的”;the number of意思是“……

  24. B

相似”用similar to,排除A、C两项。have little similarity in“在……

  25. C

be similar in sth.意思是“在某方面相似”,而后面的they both have…

  27. A

  make remarks“陈述;说”。

  28. C

  in all“总共”;not at all“一点也不”;after all“毕竟,到底”;at all“竟然”。

  29. D

  above all“尤其是,首先,最重要的是”,常位于句首或句中;in all“总共”; at all“竟然”。

  30. C

  above all“首先,最重要的是”。

  31. D

  first all中间加of意思是“首先”;in all“总共”;at all“竟然”。

  32. B

  根据have difficulty in doing…

  33. B

what great difficulty是先行词, I have是一个省略了that/which的定语从句。根据have difficulty doing sth.

  36. B

to invite Professor Smith to speak at the meeting是动词thought的宾语,空格处的成分应该是代替后面不定式的词,四个选项中只有it可以代替不定式作形式宾语,故选择B项。

  37. D

  lie on意为“依赖”; lie in意为“在于”;lead to“导致,引起”。

devote to“贡献”;stick to“坚持”;refer to“涉及”; lead to“导致”。

  39. B

短语find sb. doing sth.的被动结构是sb. be found doing sth.。

  41. B

  当后面跟有“in,out of,with,along with,together with,including,but,except,like,as well as,no more than,no less than,in addition to,rather than+名词”时,谓语动词的单复数形式应与前面的主语保持一致。

  42. B

  both…and连接并列主语时,谓语动词用复数形式;not only…but also与either…or连接并列主语时,采用就近一致原则,本题的谓语动词应与her friends一致,应用are。

If I could select a word that best describes the majority of American parents, that word would be guiltridden (内疚的).How sad it is to see parents become the willing victims of the “giveme game”, only to discover that, no matter what they do, it isn’t enough. In the end, they are looked down for their lack of firmness and blamed when their spoiled children get into trouble. With this in mind, I shall first answer this question: “What do parents owe their children?”And I shall start with what they don’t owe them.

Parents don’t owe their children every minute of their day and every ounce of their energy. They don’t owe roundtheclock car service, singing lessons, tennis lessons, an expensive car when they reach sixteen, or a trip to Europe when they graduate.

I take the firm position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, fine. But they need not feel guilty if they can’t.If the children really want to go, they’ll find a way. Here are plenty of loans and scholarships for the bright and eager who can’t afford to pay.

After children marry, their parents do not owe them a house or money for the furniture. They do not have an obligation to babysit their grandchildren when the parents were on vacation. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favour, not an obligation.

In my opinion, parents do not owe their children an inheritance, no matter how much money they have. One of the surest ways to produce a loafer is to let children know that their future is assured.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their chief obligations is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for selfesteem is the basis of a good mental health.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal belongings.

No child asks to be born.If you bring a life into the world, you owe the children something. And if you give him his due, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.

  1.According to the author, ________.

A.parents ought to send children to college as a duty

B.parents needn’t feel guilty if they are unable to send their children to college

C.if they say “No”,parents will surely make their children angry

D.parents must support their children even after their marriage

But they needn’t feel guilty if they can’t.,说明他们如果供不起孩子上大学,不应感到愧疚。

2.The underlined word “loafer” most probably refers to ________.

  A.a poorly educated person

  B.a well educated person

  C.a hardworking person

  D.a lazy person

3.The writer of this passage mainly wants to tell us ________.

A.why children look down upon their parents

B.the difference between duties of the parents and the children

C.over devotion to the children results in trouble for the parents themselves

D.children should depend on no one but themselves

4.The author’s attitude towards the parents is ________.

  A.angry

  B.pitiful

  C disappointed

  D.satisfied

It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of the current US President. The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words,“a wonderfully written book .”However, he then proceeded

to talk about Mr Obama in a way that suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that he is not the only one. Clearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t . In The World Book Day survey, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The survey lists top ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading. As I’m not one to lie too often, I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s absolutely outstanding.

Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to . This could be difficult if the conversation became more in-depth !

The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it. It shows that many people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and so on. But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, they named JK Rowling, Jilly Cooper, and Stephen King (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-one percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.

So which books have you lied about reading—if any—and which is your favourite?

56.The main reason why people lie about reading is to

  A.make fun of the listener

  B.impress the listener

  C.please the listener

  D.interest the listener

57.The underlined word“proceeded”in the passage probably means“

  ”

  A.wanted

  B.happened

  C.continued

  D.stopped

58.What does The World Book Day survey show?

A.Nearly half of the people surveryed didn’t read through a whole classical book. B.People don’t like Dreams From My Father and George Orwell’s 1984

C.Few people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen.

D.People usually enjoy reading books by Charles Dickens.

59.What is the best title for the passage?

  A.Are You A Book Liar?

  B.Readers Are All Liars

  C.World Book Day

  D.Dreams From My Father,
