第二部分 阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
When we found him,he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him,we saw him fall.He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.
After we got him out,we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.
We found him just in time.
This man, like others before him,had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, had he made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.
Whatever sense of direction that a man may have,it's still largely a question of observation.A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes that the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind,he may be turned around many times, but he is seldom lost.
There are exceptions,of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation.A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass (指南针)in his pocket.Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.
When this happens, the normal first reaction(反应)is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn't show up.This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.
The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He'll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.
【解题导语】 人们在知道自己迷路之后,只是感到了恐惧。而正是这种恐惧扼杀了所有的方向感觉,最终断绝了逃生之路。

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature,a clear airway(气道),and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain.First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured,a few minutes can make a difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider's level of knowledge and skill.Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do.Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal(脊柱的)injury and paralysis(瘫痪).
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim,if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid.Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes(糖尿病)or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical bracelet (手镯)or card that describes special medical conditions.Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury,do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether lifethreatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词)ABC,which stands for:
A—Airway:Is it open and clear?
B—Breathing:Is the person breathing?Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C—Circulation:Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally?Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.

Nobody expects it to happen to them, but they should.Of all the disasters that can strike a home, fire is the most common.Although smoke detectors(探测器)are now common, fire damages or destroys hundreds of thousands of homes each year.Fires account for more than 90 percent of American Red Cross disaster responses. But Red Cross preparedness and response spokesperson Tara Lynch says there are things you can do to help keep your family safe. The Red Cross advice boils_down to three principles:Get a kit, make a plan, and be careful.
Get a kit.Every home should have smoke detectors,a fire extinguisher(灭火器)and an evacuation kit(紧急疏散器具箱).Smoke detectors should be placed outside of every sleeping area and on every floor.Test your smoke detectors once a month.Make sure they will work when you need them.Your local fire station will train you on how to use a fire extinguisher. The evacuation kit should include a flashlight,IDs,driver's licenses and insurance papers, plus essential medicine, and even pet supplies.
Make a plan.Families should gather to make a fire escape plan and practice that plan at least twice a year.People in multistorey homes will need a fire ladder.Families should also decide on a place to meet after they escape from their homes.Even though it can be frightening for children and hard for parents to consider the possibility of a fire, proper planning can make an enormous difference in the event of an emergency.
Be careful.Home fires are more likely to start in a kitchen than in any other room.Never leave a stove unattended, and be particularly careful with space heaters. It's important to follow the instructions on all the space heaters and keep them at least three feet from any other object.

First aid means the aid or the help that can be given to an injured person first, that is,before any other help arrives.Nowadays there is usually a telephone not far away and the first we should do,if a serious accident happens,is to send someone to telephone for an ambulance.Sometimes quick action by us may save someone's life.
Shock.People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury, sometimes even when the injury is a small one.The face turns grey, and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm.Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.
Broken bones.Do not move the patient.Send for an ambulance at once.Treat for shock if necessary.

Teenagers are the most dangerous drivers on the road, and car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens. But there’s one simple way to keep kids safer: Don’t give teens a car they consider their own.
Teenagers who reported that they were the main person driving a vehicle, rather than sharing it with other family members, were more than twice as likely to be involved in a recent crash. One in four drivers with primary access to a car had had an accident while driving in the past year, compared with 1 in 10 for shared access. That means 25 percent of the kids driving their own cars had at least one accident last year! The teens with their own car also were more likely to use a cellphone while driving(78 percent, compared with 55 percent)and to speed(70 percent vs. 54 percent). These figures come from a survey of 2,167 teenagers by researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It is said to be the first to look at whether having primary access to a car affects safety for teenage drivers.
What makes driving a family car safer?Maybe it’s as simple as knowing that it’s the family’s car.I remember my horror when I backed into a car in the high school parking lot and crumpled the fender of the family car.I’m sure the realization that it wasn’t “my” car made me more sorry—and more careful.
Many parents are excited when their teenager is finally driving, and many teens need to drive themselves to school or work.As a result,it’s easy for parents to think that a new driver needs a car.Indeed, the researchers found that 70 percent of the teenagers said that they had their own car. This is dangerous, and parents should consider delaying giving a child a car at least until the teenager has been driving for a year.
Children who have strict parents were 50 percent less likely to have had a crash in the past year, compared with parents whose style is permissive. The advice:Don’t be afraid to set rules for safe driving behavior, and take the keys if those rules aren’t followed. In fact, making your teenager say,“Mom,can I have the car keys?”may be one of the simplest and best ways to keep your child safe.

答案 56.either→neither [“neither...nor...”表示“既不……也不……”,即作者既没有兄弟,也没有姐妹。]
57.去掉any [in other words是固定搭配,表示“换句话说”。]
58.make前加to [(that)they can(do)是定语从句,修饰先行词all,后面的不定式是目的状语。]
59.did→do [全文都是一般现在时,叙述的是现在的客观事实。]
60.on→to或devote→spend [devote to和spend on都是固定搭配。]
61.subject→subjects [subject“学科”为可数名词,根据句中的all可知表示的是复数意义。]
62.a→the [the same是固定用法,表示“相同的”。]
63.去掉about [about后面没有宾语,因此需要去掉。]
64.and→or [此处的指代对象是作者一个人,因此表示的是选择关系,而不是并列关系。]
65.what→how [作者想知道其他家庭的情况“如何”。]
