No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA.There are almost 2,000 of them,as compared with 180 in Japan,164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world.Famous dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these presents detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.
Like the press in most other countries,American newspapers range from the “sensational” which feature crime and gossip(闲谈),to the “serious”,which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions,American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.
Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes,so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties.A few newspapers support extremist(极端主义的)groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract middleoftheroad Americans who are moderate(中立的).Many of these papers print columns by wellknown journalists of different political and social views,in order to present a balanced picture.
As in other countries,American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals(丑闻)or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair(水门事件).The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.

Speaking in his first National Day Rally speech on 15 August,Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore's education system was set for more reforms in the years ahead, particularly for the primary and secondary education.Read the summary of his thoughts on education below.
For a start, the Government is prepared to send an additional 3,000 teachers to Singapore schools, cut the courses of study even further and change the way the mother tongue, especially Chinese,is taught. But,for the changes to be successful, parents need to help.
Singapore has a devoted group of teachers and principals and quite a few of them are outstanding, but the Republic's schools can be even better. To help the schools make a jump in quality, the Government plans that within the next 6 years,it will send 1,000 more teachers to primary schools,1,400 to secondary schools and 550 more to junior colleges. Each school would decide how to use its extra teachers. Some may want to make classes smaller so students get more individual attentions while others may have new teachers assist more senior teachers, but the overall goal is to give teachers the time and space to come up with ways to bring out the best in their students.
More teachers must not mean more homework, however. In fact, the Prime Minister wants to see the courses cut down so that there is less pressure on the students.Good grades are important but they should not be the only goal students have.PM Lee is convinced that “we must teach less so that our children can learn more.”
Another change will be in the teaching of the mother tongue so that students can become more fluent. The key is to teach Chinese as a living language not just an academic subject like Latin. Therefore, the focus should be on speaking and reading the language. To do this, there must be an environment outside the classroom that is contributing to strengthening the Chinese lessons.

Neither television nor radio nor magazines nor books nor any other medium can begin to match newspapers for depth and breadth of coverage(资讯报道).In fact, all these media themselves depend on newspapers to bring them information that they then process and distribute as their own brand of news.
Now many newspapers are locked in a struggle for survival. If they lose—which is by no means impossible—we all lose.
The great task for editors and publishers is to respond to the competitive challenge caused by online news, and at the same time use their own online news to increase their profits (利润).As yet, they haven't figured out a smooth and sure way to do that.
So they cut some more to get profit. The cuts in size that they are making are in some cases risky and in others without considering the results. With every cut, publishers tirelessly argue that readers won't even know the difference. The trouble is that by the time customers do notice that they are getting less for their money,it will be too late—too late to notice the reduction in the number of readers.
The other big cuts,of course, are in staff(员工).The victims would be the oldest and most experienced workers because they are the highest paid. While there is plenty of tired deadwood among them, there is also a lot of talent.
When experienced staff leave in large numbers—as they often do now—the newspaper loses great professional memory. But the real loser is the readers, who are suddenly robbed of the insights(见识)that only the experienced reporters can bring.
As for the future, there is at least one big, bright sign:intelligent young people will continue to flood into journalism in urgent search of jobs, despite its high demands and modest(不太高的)pay.

A.The author had no objection.

Car makers will be trying their best to meet the demand for electric cars and the lithium batteries that power them within the next two years,Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault and Nissan, has predicted.
Mr.Ghosn said at the Geneva motor show yesterday that Renault and Nissan stood to profit because they would be“the only one on the market”with an electric car by 2011.“If I had to make a bet today,I would say we’re going to be very quickly in shot capacity(产量)for electric cars.”Mr.Ghosn said.“From everything I’m seeing,in 2011 or 2017 we’re going to have to rush to build capacity for both batteries and cars.”
Renault and Nissan are between them building enough capacity to produce about 150,000 such cars in Japan,200,000 in Europe, and more than 200,000 in the U.S.“We’re putting the system in place—who else is doing that.”Mr.Ghosn said.
The allied French and Japanese car makers are pushing more aggressively than other big car producers
into pure battery electric vehicles, despite a widespread view among their competitors and industry analysts(分析家)that they will be little more than a nice product.

60.bring→brings [主语是Another thing,时态为一般现在时,因此谓语动词应为brings。]
61.is后加that [is后面为表语从句,缺少连接词that。]
62.删掉between [the normal relationship后跟定语从句which we have in or out of school,介词between多余,应去掉。]
63.accepts→receives/gets [“接到”电话用动词receive/get a call。]
64.sometime→sometimes [sometime指“在将来某个时候或在过去某个时候”;而sometimes指“有时”。根据文章的时态应把sometime改为sometimes。]
65.Will→Do [副词often表明本句为一般现在时,因此该疑问句应该用do引导。]
