阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中选出最佳选项。
A
Traditional rubbish collection is dirty, smelly, laborintensive, and rubbish can pile up in basements or wooden bins. This new system does away with all that and with lots of expensive bin lorries.
“Nobody sees anything happening, there's no bins, there's no trucks on street, there's no boxes, there is no kids on the bikes trying to fight with dust cars going up on the street. It's safe,it's clean, and it's healthy for everybody.”
This is how it works:you sort your rubbish into special containers in your kitchen, then take the bags to one of these. They drop down into the building's basement.Twice a day,a powerful vacuum sucks them away to a collection centre down a single pipe.First, the food waste, then general rubbish, then stuff for recycling, like paper and cans.
In the past thirty years, the system's been equipped around the world, from Stockholm to Barcelona,Disneyland to Dubai, but never in the UK.One problem:it's expensive.Local councils don't pay the cost of equipment. The developer here next to Wembley Stadium, says it makes sense partly because this development is the size of a small town.
“We own the entire site, the 85 acres and all the roads. And that's the fundamental that we control the public ground. And we take a benefit of that because our public ground's going to be great as a consequence of this system.”
“And this is where it ends up,the central collection centre. That great big green pipe is the outlet from the underground network and laid in all the roads around here. These great big things are essentially enormous intensive vacuum cleaner that will swirl(使旋转)the rubbish around, the air, goes off to the top.The waste goes down to the bottom and then it is shifted to one of these containers where it can be put on to a lorry and taken away.”Environmentally,it's claimed the systems are great improvement, but it has a challenge.

The concept of solar power satellites,or SPS,first put forward in the 1960s,is still not widely known by the general public. For example at many public exhibitions about Energy,SPS is not even mentioned. This is mainly because very little funding has been spent on SPS research
to date—about 1/1000 of 1% of the approximately US $1 trillion that governments have spent subsidizing(补助)the development of nuclear power over the past 50 years.
There are critics who claim that SPS is unrealistic—because launch costs are much too high today;or because microwave beams will set fire to cities;or because it's too futuristic(未来的).So why do we believe that it is important to continue to do research on SPS?The reason is very simple.
Humans are going to need enormous amounts of electric power in coming decades.Within 50 years the world population is expected to double, while economic growth will continue around the world, especially in the poorer countries. But existing energy sources already face serious problems. They're limited;they're polluting;they're dangerous. So 50 years from now,100 years from now, where is our power going to come from?Nobody knows. And so we believe that new largescale possibilities should be studied further.
We must remember that humans have some choice concerning our future. To some extent we can choose the direction in which our civilization develops. And choices that are made in the coming decades—such as the energy sources that we will or will not use—will have major, longterm influence on human life on Earth. We believe that, provided that research continues to show that SPS is environmentally and economically attractive,SPS will open the door to a much more attractive future for human civilization than any groundbased energy source;and one that the public will support;and that young people will find challenging and exciting.Furthermore energy from SPS can be readily used in developing countries,as the SPS 2000 project will demonstrate, thereby aiding economic development worldwide. In addition,by creating large commercial revenues(税收)for space engineering,SPS will open the frontier of space to economic development, thereby creating a limitless new field for growth of the world economy.

A.Present energy sources face serious problems.
B.Where to get energy sources in the future.
C.The importance of controlling the world population.

The world is not coming to an end on December 21,2017,the US space agency insisted Monday in a rare campaign to dispel widespread rumors fueled by the Internet and a new Hollywood movie.
The latest big screen offering from Sony Picture,2017,arrives in theaters on Friday, with a 200milliondollar production about the end of the world supposedly based on myths(虚构的故事)backed by the Mayan calendar. It is claimed that the end of time will come as a Planet X—or Nibiru—heads toward or collides with the Earth.
Some websites accuse NASA of hiding the truth on the planet's existence, but the US space agency denounced such stories as an “Internet hoax(恶作剧)”.“There is no factual basis for these claims,”NASA said in a questionandanswer posting on its website.“If such a collision were real, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye.Obviously,it does not exist.Credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2017,”it insisted.“After all,our planet has been getting along just well for more than four billion years,”added NASA.
There is another planet,Eris, floating in space. But the small planet similar to Pluto will remain safely fixed in the outer solar system and it can come no closer than four billion miles to the Earth, according to NASA.
Initial theories set the disaster for May 2003,but when nothing happened the date was moved forward to the winter in 2017 to coincide with the end of a cycle of the ancient Mayan calendar.
NASA insisted the Mayan calendar in fact does not end on December 21,2017,as another period begins immediately afterward.
And even if the planets were to line up as some have forecast, the effect on our planet would be “negligible”,NASA said.
“And while comets and asteroids(小行星)have always hit the Earth, big hits are very rare,”NASA noted. The last major impact was believed to be 65 million years ago, resulting in the end of dinosaurs.
“We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs,”the space agency said.

There are many American expressions about insects—like bees, for example.Bees are known as very hard workers. They always appear to be busy, moving around their homes,or hives(蜂房).So you might say you are as busy as a bee if you spend your weekend cleaning your house. In fact, you might say your house is a beehive of activity if your whole family is helping you clean. You also might say you make a beeline for something if you go there right away. When we go to see a movie,my friend always makes a beeline for the place where popcorn is sold.
If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was the bee’s knees. If your friend cannot stop talking about something because she thinks it is important, you might say she has a bee in her bonnet(软帽).If someone asks you a personal question, you might say,“That is none of your beeswax.”This means“none of your business”.
Hornets(大黄蜂)are beelike insects that sometimes attack people. If you are really angry, you might say you are mad as a hornet. And if you stir up a hornet’s nest, you create problems.
Butterflies are beautiful insects, but you would not want to have butterflies in your stomach:That means to be nervous about having to do something, like speaking in front of a crowd. You would not want to have ants in your pants, either. That is,to be restless and unable to sit still.
Here are some expressions about plain old bugs, another word for insects. If a friend keeps asking you to do something you do not want to do,you might ask him to leave you alone or stop bugging you.A friend might also tell you again and again to do something. If so,you might say he puts a bug in your ear.And if you wish someone good night, you might say,“Sleep tight—don’t let the bed bugs bite.”

57.that→this/the [文章第一句就说到了这是教授刚刚开始上课,要引出的是这节课的内容,而不是上节课,所以要用this或者the引出下文。]
58.but→and [学生们在用各种方法来完成教授的任务,铅笔在飞舞,橡皮在不断地擦是并列的动作,所以要用and表示并列关系,而不是转折关系。]
59.had→have [整篇文章用的是一般现在时,要注意统一时态。]
60.whom→who [在非限制性定语从句中指人的时候要用who,在句中作主语,不能用whom。]
61.turns in [这个学生写完了答案之后就要交给教授,所以要用到的短语是turn in。]
62.classmate→classmates [事件发生在班里,还有很多其余的学生,所以这里的名词要用复数形式。]
63.For→To [这里考查的是与surprise有关的介词短语的搭配。表示“令某人……”的时候的介词要用to而不是for。]
64.highly→high [注意highly用来表示抽象意义,意为“高度的”,不能修饰mark。]
65.a [教授让学生们证明椅子不存在,而这个聪明的学生的回答就是“什么椅子?”,既然不知道何为椅子,当然也就无所谓存在,所以这里不能用冠词。]

Last week we had a discussion about whether we still need Confucian thought in modern society.About 60% of the students in my class think it necessary to study Confucian thought. For one thing, more and more people in different countries are bursting to study it,showing that it is still treasured in the world. For another,Confucian thought is believed to have made great contributions to the peace of human beings.
But every coin has two sides.About 40% of the students in my class insist Confucian thought is outdated. In a way it limits the development of the world.
Different people have different opinions.I think Confucian thought still has some positive effects on our society.
