完形填空6
1.
In a class I teach for adults, I recently did the “unpardonable.” I gave the class homework!
The assignment (任务) was to “go to someone you love
36
the next week and tell them you love them. It
37
to be someone you have never
38
those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.” That doesn’t
39
like a very tough assignment,
40
you stop to realize that most of the men
were over 35 and were
41
in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho (男子汉气概的).” Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done
42
this was a very threatening assignment for some.
At the
43
of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to
44
what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the
45
to volunteer, as was usually the
46
, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit
47
. As he unfolded out of his chair, he began by saying, “Dennis. I was quite
48
with you last week when you gave us the assignment. I didn’t feel that I had
49
to say those words to and
50
, who were you to tell me to do something that personal? But as I began driving home my conscience (良知) started talking to me. It was telling me that I
51
exactly who I needed to say I love you to. You see, five years ago, my father and I had a heated
52
and really never resolved it since that one. We
53
seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But
54
then, we hardly spoke to each other. So last. Tuesday
55
I got home, I had convinced myself. I was going to tell my father I loved him.”

There are going to be moments in life when you must make very important decisions. You will find many people
36
to offer you advice if you ask for it (and even if you don’t), but always remember that the life you
37
is yours and nobody else’s. It’s important to decide for yourself what’s important to you and what you want before you
38
others. Because while there will be times
39
outside advice proves wise, there will be at least as many times when it proves completely
40
. The only way to really evaluate other folks’ advice is to first learn everything that you can about whatever challenge you are
41
. Once you’ve done that, in most cases you should be able to make a wise decision
42
anyway.
You were
43
with the ability to decide what is and what isn’t in your best interest. Most of the time, you will make the right decision and
44
the appropriate actions, and in thinking for yourself, you will become far more successful than if you had gone
against your own
45
.
Early on in my investment career, I made the mistake of
46
a few important business decisions on colleagues’ opinions instead of conducting the
47
necessary to make a wise decision. It wasn’t due to
48
on my part; no one could ever accuse me of that. But, being
49
to Wall Street, I intended to assume that my more senior
50
knew more than I did, and so I
51
too much significance to their opinions.
You know what happened? Each of those investments ended in
52
. Eventually I stopped allowing myself to be influenced by
53
and began doing the work myself and making my own decisions. It took me until I was almost 30 years old to
54
this—it’s never too late for a person to change his approach both to
55
and to life.

I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America.
It is said, “The best house is in America, the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.” So I took pride (自豪)and __21__ to __22__ “the best food” for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking, I would do something in __23__ way: changing the dishes’ colour, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. (风味)Thus, my American friends could discover the __24__ of eating Chinese food. Because of my “__25__” job, I was often rewarded (奖励) by their __26__ of appreciation (感激)such as “very delicious”, “excellent”, etc.
But the joke was here: Yesterday, I cooked Sichuan style __27__ for dinner. I was __28__ at my achievement.(成就)
When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked __29__ at the fish, then looked at me. “Why do all the fish have their __30__?” they asked, “It’s terrible!”
Terrible or beautiful? I don’t know. But I __31_ know that fish heads are delicious. The __32__ is the best part of fish; in __33__ only the respectable (受敬重的)guest can have the special honour of __34__ it.
Another __35__ thing is: The American friends often said to me “__36__” as they __37__ fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition I would simply smile in answer to their kindness __38__ actually helping myself to any of the food. __39__, I said “help yourself” to them whenever I brought home fruits. Dear me, no matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they __40__ hesitated (犹豫)to use their hands to “help themselves” until all was finished
