People in the United States honor their parents with 2 special days: Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May and Father’s Day on the 3rd Sunday in June. These days are to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home and more fathers must help with child-care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day, people wear carnations (康乃馨). A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It’s also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (墓地). On these days families get together at home as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are more valued than those bought in stores. It’s not the value of the gift that is important, but “the thought” that counts. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakers, phone companies and other stores do lots of business during these holidays.

That’s because he’s a weekend volunteer firefighter(消防员)with Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Station 13 in Northern Virginia. Chinese netizens who like to create and use cyber words (网络语言) such as “geilivable” might find a new regulation very “ungeilivable”. The new regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication last week banned the use of Chinglish words created by netizens for publishing in the Chinese language.

“Geilivable”, combining the pinyin geili (giving strength) with the English suffix (后缀) for adjectives, literally means “giving power” or “cool”. Different suffixes and prefixes were then added to the word. “Hengeilivable” means “very cool”, and “ungeilivable” means “dull, not cool at all”.

Cyber language is popular among Chinese netizens, who create Chinglish words to reflect phenomenon in society. One example is “antizen”, which refers to college graduates who earn a meager salary and live in small rented apartments, like tiny and laborious ants.

David Tool, a professor with the Beijing International Studies University, said it’s very interesting to combine Chinese with English to create new words. “English is no longer mysterious to the Chinese people. They can use the language in a flexible way according to their own experiences,” Tool said.

At the announcement of the regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication, netizens expressed their concern.

“The administration is totally ‘ungeilivable’,” said a netizen named laoda1713. “I know other netizens will shed tears with me... it is a good chance to enrich our language.”

“Language is always developing,” said a columnist (专栏作家), Wang Pei. “It needs to be updated to absorb foreign culture and folk wisdom.”

But an unnamed official with the administration said that, in fact, many senior staff from news media who supported the regulation were worried that years later, the younger generation would forget how to use formal Chinese expressions. The official also pointed out that the regulation was only for formal publications in Chinese language, and it only banned Chinglish words in the publication.

62.The new regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication may

  be aimed at _________.

  A. simplifying the Chinese language

  B. limiting the development of language

  C. banning the use of Chinglish in the publication

  D. making the netizens more serious

63.The underlined word “meager” in the third paragraph probably means________.

  A. poor

  B. flexible

  C. high

  D. plentiful

64.From this passage we can infer that__________.

  A. the Chinese people like their own language only

  B. the English words are considered informal in China

  C. nobody in China will support the new regulation

  D. “geilivable” is popular among Chinese netizens

65.Which may be the best title of this passage?

  A. Cyber Words Face an Ungeilivable Regulation

  B. Cyber Words Make Language More Lively

  C. Different Views about Cyber Language

  D. New Netizens in China

66.On which column of China Daily can you find this passage?

  A. Entertainment

  B. Business

  C. Travel

  D. Opinion

  D

A bad Working Memory (大脑的工作记忆) – the brain’s temporary storage box - may explain, new research suggests, why one child cannot read his or her history book and another gets lost in math. As many as 10 percent of school-age children may suffer from poor working memory. British researchers said in a report last week, yet the problem is rarely identified.

“You can think of working memory as a pure measure of your child’s potential. Many psychologists consider working memory to be the new IQ (智商), because we find that working memory is one of the most important predictors (预示物) of learning ability,” said Dr. Tracey Alloway of Britain’s Durham University.

Many children with poor working memory are considered lazy or dull. Working memory allows people to hold in their minds and deal with a few items, such as telephone numbers, over a short period of time. Alloway compares working memory to a box. For adults, the basic box size is thought to be three to five items. It’s important, therefore, to put in the right things. Irrelevant (不相关的) information will clutter (混乱) working memory.

The question many researchers are struggling with is how to help children with this problem, which appears to be closely related to a lack of attention.

“In children with learning difficulties, it becomes a huge issue, especially around middle school, when the demands on working memory really grow,” said Dr. Mel Levine, co-founder of All Kinds of Minds, a nonprofit organization in North Carolina that studies learning difficulties.

Memory training may help improve working memory. Alloway has a tool that allows teachers to assess (评定) the working-memory capacity of children as young as 4; it has been used in 35 schools across Britain.

Levine’s organization trains teachers through a program called Schools Attuned, which is working with several thousand schools across the United States, Canada and Europe. While he is not sure working memory can be expanded, Levine said children can be taught ways to do better in school.

67.Which of the following is a characteristic of working memory?

  A. It has a limited capacity.

  B. It is usually better in children than adults.

  C. It improves with use.

  D. It can cause a lack of attention.

68.According to the new research, ___________.

  A. the importance of working memory has been long recognized

  B. working memory is becoming recognized as a factor in intelligence

  C. laziness can weaken working memory

  D. working memory helps people remember things forever

69.Which of the following may help improve a child’s working memory?

  A. Expanding the brain’ s storage box.

  B. Remembering more things.

  C. Training the memory.

  D. Being reminded frequently.

70.According to the passage, Dr. Mel Levine has ___________.

  A. invented tools to help improve a child's working memory

  B. founded an organization to train teachers to help students with this problem

  C. identified the problem clearly

  D. compared working memory to a box

  第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有多余选项。

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact.

  71

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong.

  72

One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak.

  73

But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means — practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can?

  74

Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things. They cannot write them down in a little notebook and they have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

  75

  A. What do you think of it?

  B. Yet many people do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way.

  C. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.

  D. So if you want a good memory, practice remembering.

  E. Someone else says that he is poor in health.

  F. Why is this?

  G. The position is exactly the same as that of two people.

I know you want to find a job in my hometown, Jilin City. I’ve read Jiangcheng Daily, and I found that Beihua University is running a summer English course for children and adults. They need a foreign teacher, and their requirements are as follows.

The teacher should be a native English speaker, which I think fits you so much. University degrees are required and education majors are preferred. If you are interested, you should bring your foreign expert certification along to Beihua University, or you may contact them by calling 0432-212445 or sending them an email with the address: beihua university @ 126. com.

I really hope that you will get the job and enjoy staying in my hometown.

  Yours,

  Li Hua

  (Text 1)

M: Look at those beautiful birds over there. I think you can teach them to talk.

W: But look at the price! I’d rather have a cat.

  (Text 2)

M: I suppose the reason why so many tourists come here is that everything is so cheap.

W: Cheap? Nothing is really cheap here.

  (Text 3)

W: Where are you going to plant the tree? By the front door?

M: No, that would be silly. It’ll grow too big. I’m going to put it at the back of the garage.

W: I thought it would be better right at the end of the garden.

  M: OK.

  (Text 4)

M: Can I take your coat, Madam?

  W: Thank you.

M: And would you like something to drink before you order your meal?

  (Text 5)

W: Where were you on Christmas, David? I called you several times and nobody was home.

M: My parents and I travelled to New Zealand to visit my uncle. It was quite an experience to spend Christmas in summer.

  (Text 6)

  M: Hello! Police Station.

W: Hello! This is Mrs Black.

M: Can I help you, Madam?

W: Yes.I’ve just come home from work and I find someone has broken into my house and stolen all my money and jewellery.Could you please come over immediately?

  M: Sure.Where do you live?

W: My house is No. 14 on the 5th Avenue.

M: OK.Don’t worry, Madam. We’ll be there in about 10 minutes.

  (Text 7)

M: Good morning, Madam. Can I help you?

W: Ah, yes. I want to go to New York and I’m not so sure of the best way to get there.

M: Well, you could get there by the long distance bus. It’s only $15.

W: Mm, that’s not bad. How long does it take me to get there?

M: It takes you about ten hours.

  W: Ten hours?

M: Well, yes. But you can go at night, so you might get some sleep anyway.

W: Oh, no. I never sleep sitting up.

  (Text 8)

  W: May I help you?

M: Yes, I would like some tickets for next week’s ballet performances.

W: Which performance do you wish to attend? There will be three: Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings.

M: Are there still seats for all the performances?

W: Not many, and very few together. How many tickets do you want?

M: Just two, preferably together. The date is less important.

W: I have two together in the last row for Sunday evening.

M: That would be fine. How much are they?

  W: Ten dollars
