A new generation addiction is quickly spreading all over the world. Weboholism, a twentieth century disease, affects people from different ages. They surf the Net, use emails and speak in chat rooms. They spend many hours on the computer, and it becomes a compulsive habit. They cannot stop, and it affects their lives.

Ten years ago, no one thought that using computers could become compulsive behavior that could affect the social and physical life of computer users. This obsessional behavior has affected teenagers and college students. They are likely to log on computers and spend long hours at different websites.

They become hooked on computers and gradually their social and school life is affected by this situation. They spend all free time surfing and don't concentrate on homework, so this addiction influences their grades and success at school.Because they can find everything on the websites, they hang out there.

Moreover, this addiction to websites influences their social life.

They spend more time in front of computers than with their friends.

The relation with their friends changes.

The virtual life becomes more important than their real life. They have a new language that they speak in the chat rooms and it causes cultural changes in society.

Because of the change in their behavior, they begin to keep themselves apart from the society and live with their virtual friends. They share their emotions and feelings with friends who they have never met in their life. Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real live friends they have known all their life. It is a problem for the future. This addictive behavior is beginning to affect all the world.

  A. The influence of weboholism.

  B. The advantage of weboholism.

  C. The popularity of weboholism.

  D. The cause of weboholism.

  A.Attractive.

  B. Professional.

  C.Addictive.

  D. Potential.

A.weboholism has the greatest effect on teenagers

B.students can hardly balance real and virtual life

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning how to stand on your own two feet. But take a look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly(大胆地) on their own, most of them are clutching at (紧握) one another's hands for reassurance.

They claim that they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in musil. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusandsuch a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon — into a lager cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry had firmly carved out a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teen ager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come toward high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teen ager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

56.Through this passage the writer wants to advise

  .

A.teenager how to be popular with people around

B.teenagers how to decide things for themselves

C.parents how to control and guide their children

D.people how to understand and respect each other

57.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Every kind of popularity doesn’t count.

B.What many parents are doing is in fact preventing their children from getting high marks.

C.It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

D.Many teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to do.

58.The author thinks of advertisements as __________________.

  A.debatable B.instructive C.unavoidable D.authoritative

59.During the teenage years, one should learn to ________________.

A.differ from others in as many ways as possible

  B.become as popular as possible

C.find one's real self and not to follow others’ fashion blindly

D.rebel against parents and the popularity waves

The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes.

For thousands of years,Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798.He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship.He called the island Pleasant Island.

However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island.A tenyear civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.

Nauru's real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸盐)on the island. In fact,it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which was a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.

A phosphate mine was not a hole in the ground;it was a strip mine. When a company stripmined,it removed the top layer of soil. Then it took away the material it wanted.Strip mining totally destroyed the land.Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.

In 1968,Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world.Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.

Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses.Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out.Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing.By 2000,Nauru was financially ruined.Experts say that it would take approximately$433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.

1.What might be the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To seek help for Nauru's problems.

B.To give a warning to other countries.

C.To show the importance of money.

D.To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.

  A.Rich and powerful.

  B.Modern and open.

  C.Peaceful and attractive.

  D.Greedy and aggressive.

3.The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from________.

  A.soil pollution

  B.phosphate overmining

  C.farming activity

  D.whale hunting

4.Which of the following was a cause of Nauru's financial problem?

  A.Its leaders misused the money.

B.It spent too much repairing the island.

C.Its phosphate mining cost much money.

D.It lost millions of dollars in the civil war.

5.What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph?

A.The ecological damage is difficult to repair.

B.The leaders will take the experts' words seriously.

C.The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.

  D.The phosphate mines were destroyed.

由文章第一段的“Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes.”

由最后一段的“Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out.Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing.”

由最后一段的“Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses.” 故选A项。

Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. 故选A项。

  To whom it may concern,

This letter describes the worst travel experience I have ever had. The problems we has were the result of poor management and thoughtless employees. Your airline should be ashamed of treating its customers so poorly.

On January 5, we arrived in Denver from Houston and checked in for our next flight. It wasn’t long before the agent announced that our flight would be delayed because of a mechanical problem. The equipment was in Aspen, and they expected it to be repaired soon.

Soon shortly turned to much later, and during the delay, weather temporarily closed the Aspen airport. The weather cleared in Aspen and the plane took off very late for Denver. While it was in the air, the agent announced that the plane would be used for the next flight and that our flight was being cancelled.

This cancellation struck me as being unfair. There was a mad scramble(争先恐后) as the 50 or so passengers scheduled for our flight fought for seats on later flights. When the dust settled, we were wait-listed on the 9:00 flight the next morning. We had to spend the night in the airport.

Coming home was no better. Because of a mechanical problem, it looked like we would miss our connection in Denver. The agent assured us they would hold the Newark flight for us. Needless to say, the flight to Houston taxied out as we pulled into the gate. Arrangements were made for us to take the next flight, so we sat in the airport for 5 hours. When we finally arrived in Houston, our skis were missing. As of this writing, the skis have not been found.

Nothing you can do will make us feel better about our flights. If you are a responsible business, however, you will do what you can to see that passengers in the future are treated better.

  With great displeasure,

  Phyllis Dooley

  62. What happened to Phyllis on her day coming home?

A.She took a taxi to Houston airport.

B.Her flight to Houston was cancelled.

C.Her flight was delayed for five hours.

D.She missed her connection in Denver.

If you are afraid of the dark,it's not a big deal. It's perfectly normal to feel afraid. After all, animals do,too. “Fear matters,”says Karen Warkentin,an ecologist.“It's a good thing,” she adds, “because fear makes you do things that keep you alive.”

Like kids, many animals experience fear and they respond to the feeling in variety of ways.A frightened turtle pulls its head and legs inside its shell.A

small fish will swim away when a big, hungry fish approaches.

Some animals respond to fear in ways you might not expect. The first example is that the fear of being eaten can scare some frogs right out of their eggs. Warkentin made the surprising discovery while studying redeyed tree frogs in Costa Rica.

In this species, female frogs attach jellylike clumps(果冻一样的块状物)of their eggs to the undersides of leaves. The leaves hang on branches that dangle(悬挂)over ponds. After they hatch from the eggs, the tadpoles(蝌蚪)then fall into the water, where they eventually grow into adult frogs.

Tree frog eggs usually grow for 6 days before hatching. If they sense that a hungry snake is about to attack, however, they can hatch up to 2 days ahead of the schedule. As the snakes are unable to swim,by falling into the water early, the tadpoles can escape.

If hatching early helps protect redeyed tree frogs from snakes, you might wonder why their eggs don't always hatch sooner. It turns out that hatching early brings its own danger.Once tadpoles land in the water, hungry fish and other animals like to eat them, too.Staying in their eggs for 6 days, then, allows frog embryos(胚胎)to grow big and strong. This extra growth improves their chances of surviving in the water.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that fears________.

A.help animals grow bigger and stronger

B.are less common among young animals

C.help animals move a lot to fit the environment

D.are more or less important for animals to survive

2.We are told in the passage that tree frogs________.

A.face danger both inside their eggs and in the water

B.will grow fast if they fall into the water later

C.are surprisingly clever when inside their eggs

D.stay in their eggs longer if they are frightened

3.Why do the tadpoles hatch up to 2 days ahead of the schedule?Because_____.

A.they like falling into the water early

B.they want to grow into adult frogs

C.they sense a hungry snake is about to attack

  D.frog embryos can grow strong

4.What is the best title of the passage?

  A.What is fear?

  B.Why do we feel afraid?

  C.You feel afraid;animals do, too

  D.Fear is a good thing

5.What would be discussed in the following paragraph?

A.Further explanations as to why tree frogs hatch ahead of the schedule.

B.How the unborn frogs know when a snake is about to attack them.

C.Another example of animals that respond to fear in an unexpected way.

D.How tree frogs improve their chances of survival before falling into the water.

根据“…because fear makes you do things that keep you alive.”

根据“If they sense that a hungry snake is about to attack, however, they can hatch up to 2 days ahead of the schedule.”和“Once tadpoles land in the water, hungry fish and other animals like to eat them, too.” 故选A项。

根据“If they sense that a hungry snake is about to attack, however, they can hatch up to 2 days ahead of the schedule. As the snakes are unable to swim,by falling into the water early, the tadpoles can escape.”

根据“Some animals respond to fear in ways you might not expect. The first example is that the fear of being eaten can scare some frogs right out of their eggs.”
