With a social worker mother, the Sutton children had inherited her commitment to service, and knew never to take their good fortune at Christmas for granted. This year, Kinzie, her seven-year-old daughter was thrilled that Santa Claus would make a special visit to a 22-year-old mother named Ashley who worked in a factory raising her 12-month-old son by herself.

What happens inside the skull of a soccer player who repeatedly heads a soccer ball? That question motivated a challenging new study of the brains of experienced players that has caused discussion and debate among soccer players, and some anxiety among those of us with soccer-playing children.

For the study, researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York selected 34 adults—men and women. All of the volunteers had played soccer since childhood and now competed year-round in adult soccer leagues. Each filled out a detailed questionnaire developed especially for this study to determine how many times they had headed a soccer ball in the previous year, as well as whether they had experienced any known concussions(脑震荡)in the past.

Then the players completed computerized tests of their memory and other learning skills and had their brains scanned, using a complicated new M. R. I. technique which can find structural changes in the brain that can’t be seen during most scans.

According to the data they presented at a Radiological Society of North America meeting last month, the researchers found that the players who had headed the ball more than about 1, 100 times in the previous 12 months showed significant loss of white matter in parts of their brains involved with memory, attention and the processing of visual information, compared with players who had headed the ball fewer times.

This pattern of white matter loss is “similar to those seen in traumatic(外伤的)brain injury” , like that after a serious concussion, the researchers reported, even though only one of these players was reported to have ever experienced a concussion.

The players who had headed the ball about 1, 100 times or more in the past year were also generally worse at recalling lists of words read to them, forgetting or fumbling the words far more often than players who had headed the ball less.

A 33-year-old financial analyst in California has recently quitted his job to devote himself to an unpaid job teaching math on the Internet, and his lessons are reaching almost 100, 000 people a month. Salman Khan’s voice is heard every day on the net—by tens of thousands of students around the world who are hungry for help learning math. He has posted 1, 200 lessons on You Tube. . . lessons that appear on an electronic blackboard, which range from basic addition to advanced mathematics for science and finance. And they are free.

Khan lives in Silicon Valley, with his wife, a doctor, and their little baby. He got the idea for his “Khan Academy” four years ago, when he taught a young cousin how to convert kilograms to grams. With Khan’s help, the cousin got good at math, and Khan began a new career.

Now, Khan records his lessons himself, but he never goes on camera.

“It feels like my voice in their heads. You’re looking at it and it feels like someone’s over your shoulder talking in your ear, as opposed to someone at the blackboard, which is distant from you. ” he said.

When Springfield High School in Palo Alto, California invited Khan to speak in person—he immediately connected to the students there.

The idea of short lessons that can be played over and over again attracted high school senior Bridget Meaney. She said she had trouble with math in the seventh grade.

“I think the teachers are good, but they can’t teach at a speed that’s perfect for everyone, ” she said,

“I like the idea of learning something in class but then going back and pressing pause or rewinding and actually getting a deeper understanding of it. ”

Originally, Khan kept his lessons short because of YouTube restrictions. Now, he thinks short is better.

“Education researchers now tell me that 10 minutes is how long someone can have a high level of concentration. And anything beyond that and your brain switches off. ” he said.

For Khan, teaching math, science, and finance is just the beginning. He says he’s ready to expand his YouTube site to include other subjects as well.

  56. What gave Khan the idea of teaching math online?

  A. His success in helping his cousin learn math.

  B. His discovery that many students found learning math difficult.

  C. A suggestion made to him at a local high school.

  D. His interest in Internet teaching.

  57. Why does Khan never go on camera?

  A. He’s too shy to show his face on camera.

  B. It’s restricted by You Tube for education videos.

  C. He wants to keep distance from the viewers.

  D. He wants to create a more relaxed learning atmosphere.

  58. From the passage, we know that .

  A. Khan travels to many schools to promote his lessons

  B. Khan plans to include more subjects in the future

  C. Khan gives live math lessons every day for free

  D. Khan sets up the Khan Academy with his wife

  59. Why does Bridget Meaney like Khan’s lessons?

  A. Khan teaches seventh grade math better than her teacher.

  B. The lessons can be watched repeatedly until fully understood.

  C. She can perfectly follow the pace of Khan’s teaching.

  D. She cannot concentrate when learning in class.

  60. What does Khan mean by thinking “short is better” in the 6th paragraph?

  A. Keeping the lessons short can ensure better concentration.

  B. You Tube recommends short lessons for its site.

  C. Short lessons encourage students to return to the website.

  D. Students enjoy short math lessons more.

  A. Stay busy

  B. Wear what fits you

  C. You can possibly be attractive

  D. Great posture(姿势)makes you attractive

  E. Helping others makes you attractive

  F. Attention to others makes you attractive

  61.

It is possible to be an attractive person when you are in a job interview or in a place where you just want to gain the respect of others. It’s not about how much money you make, and it’s not about who your daddy is. What it is about is some simple things in your life. It just has a lot to do with being confident in who you are.

  62.

Ask questions about others when you stay with them and listen to them patiently. Talking about yourself all the time shows that you pay no attention to others. Shifting attention from yourself to others makes you attractive. It indicates that you are humble(谦逊的). If you come across as a know-it-all(even if you really do know it all), it really pushes people feel that you care, you are humble and you can be trusted.

  63.

Have you ever seen a potentially very attractive person, but he has terrible posture? It’s all ruined, isn’t it? Or perhaps you have seen someone who may be quite ugly but he has great posture and so suddenly he is really attractive? It’s true. Your posture says a lot about you—it says whether you have confidence, or simply if you really care. Talking physically, it is one of the most important physical characteristics you need.

  64.

Keeping doing things shows that you have power. You’re told to stay busy to ward off(防止, 避免)depression and feelings of anxiety. But did you know you should also stay busy to be really attractive? It’s true. Always have something to do. Have you ever seen someone just sitting around, doing nothing? How unattractive! Always be busy with something, even if for some reason you have to make something up.

  65.

Wear clothes that fit you. Too tight, people are distracted. Too loose, you just look sloppy(肥大而难看的). For women, wearing tight pants or shirts is not attractive. Slightly loose things are best, or other things that just fit you and your shape well but not tight. Men and women with taste and style really don’t know why some guys think their pants sagging down are somehow attractive. It just tells people you don’t really care. You are following the crowd. Wear things that fit you nicely.

此处用it指代the only one T-shirt。

take on承担, 呈现; take off脱下, 起飞; take up开始从事, 占用, 花去; take out取出。

when后为状语从句的省略, 补充完整为when it is properly done, 其中it(online shopping)与do之间是逻辑上的动宾关系。

故选A项。

该定语从句的先行词是a terrible sandstorm, 由such修饰, 故排除B、C两项。

no sooner. . . than “一……

How can you expect good marks when you are not listening in class?

by accident偶然地; in vain徒劳地; at random随意地; on average平均来看。

  Helping Others Can Help You

Volunteering has a meaningful, positive effect on your community. But do you know that it can have many benefits for you, too?

To begin with, volunteering enables you to gain some valuable life experience as well as work skills, which I think lays a solid foundation for your future study or career. In the meantime, by volunteering, you can make friends with people from all walks of life, from whom you can obtain useful knowledge that can’t be learnt at school. In addition, volunteering provides you with a good opportunity to give back to society and break down barriers of understanding, thus a harmonious society can be created.

As far as I’m concerned, volunteering is a good way for us to build self-esteem and self-confidence. Also, when offering other help, we ourselves will have a sense of satisfaction. Therefore, volunteering is of great benefit not only to others but also to ourselves.
