  A

My most powerful memories of Remembrance Day in the past have always been the ones where the teachers let the veterans do the talking.

It can be a little tough to get our kids, especially the younger ones, interested in the meaning behind Remembrance Day.This is why I think it’s important for schools across Canada to invite our veterans to actually come and speak to their students.

I remember my elementary school did very little to honor our veterans;high school had an annual assembly(集会).However,it wasn’t until I was in my postgraduate journalism studies program that November 11th was properly recognized. Our department was lucky enough to have a teacher who cared enough about our nation’s history to make sure all the students and some of their family came into our tiny campus library to listen to first-hand accounts from three veterans.I remember some classmates arriving at the ceremony reluctantly—it was about time and we all had deadlines to meet—however,by the end, everyone was visibly moved by the accounts and many stayed around afterward to shake the hands of the veterans and ask questions.

I’ve been thinking about how we teach the significance of Remembrance Day to our children. Each new generation will unavoidably become more impassive, which is why I’m grateful that we honor our veterans with a moment of silence or an assembly, instead of taking an entire day off from work or school we’d be more likely to forget to remember.

For kids who don’t have a particular interest in history,or don’t have a family connection to past wars, having veterans visit their schools gives them the chance to have an appreciation of those who defend our country.Giving veterans the opportunities to share their experiences with our kids would go a long way towards helping to keep their memory—and our history—alive.

1.What do the children do at present on Remembrance Day?

A.They listen to the stories from the veterans.

B.They have a day off for the special day.

C.They get together and pay a visit to the veterans.

D.They attend an annual assembly in their school.

文章第一段作者在回忆自己上学时是怎么过“阵亡将士纪念日”的,第四段尾句中的“instead of taking an entire day off from work or school”表明现在人们在这一天放假。故选B项。

2.What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.The veterans failed to gain respect in Canada.

B.The author was very grateful to the teacher.

C.The veterans were asked too many questions.

D.The author’s classmates were tired of the old stories.

依据文章第三段中的“Our department was lucky enough to have a teacher...”

3.What does the underlined word “reluctantly” probably mean in the passage?

  A.Eagerly.B.Happily.

  C.Unwillingly. D.Unsurely.

依据文中的“it was about time and we all had deadlines to meet”可知,此时学生们非常忙,而老师却组织他们听老兵的讲座,因此学生是不愿意来的。故选C项。

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Schools should invite the veterans to give a talk.

B.Children lose interest in learning history.

C.Teachers will get inspired by the veterans.

D.An interactive game in school benefits the kids.

  答案:A

故选A项。

  B

On June 2,2015,President Barack Obama awarded Henry Johnson,a World War Ⅰ soldier, the Medal of Honor. It was the result of a long campaign for a soldier whose heroism had gone unrecognized because of racial discrimination.

Johnson was one of the soldiers serving as guards in France in 1918 when they were surrounded by more than a dozen Germans. The Germans opened fire on them, wounding Johnson over 20 times, but he fought on even after his weapon wouldn’t fire anymore.

Though praised by his fellow soldiers and awarded the French Croix de Guerre(法国英勇十字勋章),he was denied the Medal of Honor in his own country.

The efforts to get the soldier recognized have been filled with starts and stops. The work was supported by the office of Charles Schumer, who handed in a 1,258-page recommendation for the award in May 2011 after a great many new documents were discovered.

“A lot of people advocated for this over a long period of time,”said a member of Schumer’s,Caroline Wekselbaum, who had spent thousands of hours on Johnson’s case.

Their effort to get Johnson the Medal of Honor was blocked in 2003 by Air Force General Richard Myers, who wanted more evidence.

But Schumer’s office kept looking for more documentation. One of their findings was a telegram during the war, which mentioned the heroism of Johnson.

Caroline expressed disappointment at the way Johnson was treated. As a black soldier,he and his colleagues were sent to the short-handed French military, but not allowed to fight in the U.S. force.

Johnson’s life after World War Ⅰ was filled with highs and lows. His injuries were never properly documented,so he did not receive any medical benefits. He died poor in July 1929,11 years after his heroism.

5.Obama awarded Henry Johnson in order to .

A.show the equality between all races

B.correct a mistake he had made

C.set a good example for soldiers

  D.approve Henry Johnson’s heroism

6.What can we know from Paragraphs 2 and 3?

  A.Johnson fought bravely without weapons.

B.Johnson was too seriously wounded to fight on.

C.Johnson’s fellow soldiers thought highly of him.

D.Johnson was awarded the Medal of Honor by France.

7.How can we understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?

A.People had great difficulty in getting the government to recognize Johnson.

B.The work of making the government recognize Johnson went very well.

C.A great many people started the case of Johnson and then stopped.

D.People made great efforts to get Johnson recognized but failed.

  答案:A

8.What on earth resulted in Johnson’s being mistreated?

A.Lack of evidence of his actions.

  B.Racial discrimination.

  C.His fighting for French military.

  D.No documentation of his injuries.

根据第一段最后的“because of racial discrimination”以及第八段的“As a black soldier”可看出,造成Johnson受到不公待遇的根本原因是种族歧视,故选B项。

  Ⅱ.七选五

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.Here’s how:

  1. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.2. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems,But it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study.Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class.3. Listening carefully in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school,go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material.4.

If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be over-worried.

  5. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.

A.This will help you understand the next class.

B.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

C.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

D.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

  E.Plan your time carefully.

F.Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

G.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

下文写到“When planning your work...”

本空前面是介绍如何做好相应的规划,“you should make a schedule of your time”,“Then decide a good,regular time for studying...”,可知选C项。

“Make good use of your time in class...”

根据下文的“If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.”

Despite the fact that people in the world are all opposed to war, they can by no means avoid it.This is indeed a regrettable thing.War is very terrible.Everybody hears it with fear. However, some countries attempting to have control over the whole world are always occupied with wars, regardless of people’s feelings of both sides.Thousands and thousands of lives involved in wars will be lost and a large amount of money wasted. It brings us untold miseries and damage.

To sum up,so long as war is unavoidable, human beings cannot enjoy lasting peace.
