“Stop thief”,I yelled as I came out or the movie theater and saw that my bike was being stolen. It was Saturday afternoon and I had just finished watching a movie with a friend. We had both ridden our bikes from home to the movie theater because it was too far to walk. When we arrived at the movie theater I realized I had forgotten my keys. The movie was just about to start and I didn’t have time to go back home and fetch my keys. So,instead,I placed the bike lock around the tire to make it appear that the bike was locked. My friend told me it was a bad idea, but I refused to go back home since I really wanted to see the movie.Sure enough someone stole my bike.

The thief was already too far away to catch by the time I exited the movie theater and caught a glimpse of him.As soon as he heard me yelling,he got on the bike and raced away. However,I was not completely out of luck;I recognized the boy who stole my bike.He was two years older than me and was one of the best baseball players in town.“Why would he steal my bike?”I thought to myself.Although I couldn’t answer that question,I did know where to find him.

The next day I went to the baseball field in the middle of town.People usually play baseball on Sunday and I thought there was a good chance I would find my baseball-playing thief there.Just as I thought, after about an hour of waiting, the boy who stole my bike arrived. Before I could confront him he left the bike and went to play baseball. To my surprise he didn’t lock the bike!I waited a minute and then ran over to the bike, jumped on,and sped away.I successfully re-stole my bike!

18.Why didn’t the author lock her bike?

B.The baseball field was in the middle of town.

C.Baseball is traditionally played on Sunday and she knew the thief was a baseball player.

  答案:C

20.Why wasn’t the author able to stop the thief?

A.The thief was too far away to catch.

B.The thief was too tall and the author was scared.

C.The author knew where she could find the thief.

  A

Junk is everywhere, even in space. But getting rid of space junk is much harder than simply cleaning your bedroom.Space junk travels at 8 kilometers a second, according to an article in TheGuardian.Catching it is a bit of a challenge.

Luckily, scientists at the Swiss space center have a new cleaning plan. They are about to send a “cleaner satellite ” into space within the next five years. It will clean up space junk, according to a report in TheGuardian.

Named “CleanSpace One”,the Swiss satellite finds its target and moves close to it.When it reaches its target,it will catch the junk with a gripping claw(抓手).This is not going to be an easy task because both the satellite and the junk are traveling so fast.

Once CleanSpace One has caught the junk, all it has to do to get rid of it is to fly back to Earth. This is because the junk will burn up when traveling through the atmosphere. The satellite itself will burn up at the same time.

Ever since people started to send objects into space more than 50 years ago, there has been junk in space.Junk on Earth like food wrappers or waste paper is also a problem. But space junk is mainly made up of exploded rockets and broken satellites. If no one cleans them away, they just keep traveling around Earth.

So far,NASA has found 16,000 pieces of junk that are larger than 10 cm in diameter and more than 500,000 pieces measuring between 1 cm and 10 cm.You can imagine how many even smaller ones in space.

Space junk is dangerous for spacecraft and the International Space Station.Even a very small piece could seriously damage or even destroy a satellite or spacecraft if it collided with the junk. The International Space Station has to regularly change its orbit to avoid space junk.

Space junk might also be a danger to humans.During the last four months, three very large spacecraft have fallen to Earth.Fortunately,no one was hurt because the junk landed in the ocean.

  21.According to the article,space junk .

A.travels at 8 kilometers per hour

B.could be cleared away within five years

C.travels at the same speed as satellites

D.will cause a lot of trouble for space stations

22.What will happen to the space junk if it is not cleaned up?

A.It will explode in a few years.

B.It will keep traveling around Earth.

C.It will drift away from Earth eventually.

D.It will gather and become a large mass.

D.The satellite goes back to space after it has finished its task.

  答案:A

24.The purpose of this passage is to .

  A.introduce space junk

  B.describe what is space junk

C.advise us to how to clean space junk

D.inform us of the danger of space junk

  AfraidofDentist’sOffice

Are you afraid of going to the dentist? If you are, what is it about that makes you so scared?

Shouldn’t going to the dentist be just like going to any other doctor?According to a recent survey by Martin Tickle,a professor at Manchester University,UK,pain is quite rare in dental surgeries—among the 451 interviewed patients,75 percent reported no pain at all during their visits, which even included occasions when they had their teeth extracted.

Could it be the sound of the drill, then?

“From my clinical experience,I found that the sound of drilling can evoke anxiety in dental patients,” Hiroyuki Karibe,a scientist at Nippon Dental University in Tokyo, told TheGuardian.

To find out why a drill might bring on a racing heart,Karibe asked volunteers to complete a questionnaire that measured how much they feared a trip to the dentist. He then divided the volunteers into low-fear and high-fear groups based on their answers.

Volunteers were then played the sound of a drill while their brain activities were monitored by a scanner.

What Karibe found in the low-fear group was increased activity in regions of the brain responsible for auditory processing(听觉处理),which means, for these people, the sound of dental drills is no different from other sounds.

In the high-fear group, however, the brain area that was activated was different. It was a region called the left caudate nucleus, which is responsible for a number of duties, including learning, emotion and, most importantly, memory. This means that these volunteers not only heard the sound, but also they remembered it—they made associations between the sound of a drill and the anxiety it produced in the past, causing anxiety to bubble up again.

Unraveling(揭示) how brains react to the sounds of dentists’ drills could help scientists find ways of making patients more at ease, according to Karibe, since patients with anxiety about trips to the dentist might keep putting off their visits until they have more severe problems with their teeth.

But the best way to avoid the uncomfortable feeling of visiting the dentist is to keep your teeth healthy so you don’t have to go there too often.

25.According to the new findings, what makes people afraid of going to the dentist?

  A.The pain of dental surgeries.

  B.The sound of dentists’ drills.

C.The environment in the dental clinic.

D.Their unwillingness to have their teeth extracted.

  答案:A

  C

  BeesFindtheRightRoute

When we go out traveling,we need either a map or GPS to point us in the right direction. But bumblebees(大黄蜂) have neither of these things, yet they still know the best route. Why is that?

It turns out that these hard-working little bees try many possible passages before picking out the best one and remembering it the next time they journey out. They learn from “trial and error”,according to a study by scientists from the University of London.

We use it all the time in our daily lives—trial and error is a helpful problem-solving method. It is the basic concept of “learning from your mistakes”.Most of the time,we fail on our first try,so we analyze the failure, make adjustments and try again. After repeating this a few times,we finally get things right.

This might sound a bit tiring, but it’s certainly effective and it works for bumblebees.

In the study, scientists set up five artificial flowers in a field. Each one of them was fitted with motion-triggered(运动触发的) cameras and had landing platforms with drops of sucrose (蔗糖) in the middle to attract the bees.

At first, scientists noticed the bees’ flying routes were long and complex. But after they gained enough experience, they gradually got to their destination quicker.Every time a bee tried a new route that was shorter than the route it had tried before,it was likely to use it again.Otherwise the new route would simply be given up and another one was tested.

“The speed at which they learn through trial and error is quite extraordinary (不同寻常的) for bumblebees,as this complex behavior was thought to be one that only larger-brained animals were capable of,” Professor Lars Chittka, leader of the study, told Sciencedaily.com.

In fact, the smart bumblebees don’t strain(费力) themselves trying every possible route.Normally, they would only try about 20 out of the 120 possible routes to visit the flowers.

More interestingly, scientists found that if they removed a flower, bees would continue looking at that location, even if it has been empty for a long time.“It seems bees don’t easily forget a fruitful flower,” Chittka said.

28.The bumblebees are good at finding the best route because .

  A.they have relatively smaller brains

B.their body parts function like GPS

C.they try out different routes and remember the best ones

D.they take the trouble of testing every possible route

29.The author explains the bumblebees’ behavior of trial and error by .

  A.using numbers

  B.making a metaphor (比喻)

  C.making comparisons

  D.talking about human behavior

30.The study led by professor Lars Chittka suggests that .

A.bumblebees try to keep their flying routes long and complex

B.every new route the bumblebees take is shorter than the one they take before

C.bumblebees are familiar with every flying route they have taken before

D.scientists find it unbelievable that bumblebees learn from their mistakes so quickly

31.What is the main point of the article?

A.Bumblebees are as smart as large-brained animals.

B.Trial and error is an effective way to solve our daily problems.

C.A new discovery about how Bumblebees find the best routes through trial and error.

D.How bumblebees remember the best routes, small as their brains are.

  D

For six hours we shot through the landscape of the Karoo desert in South Africa.Just rocks and sand and the baking sun.Knowing our journey was ending,Daniel and I just wanted to remember all we had seen and done.He used a camera.I used words.I had already finished three notebooks and was into the fourth,a beautiful leather notebook I’d bought in a market in Mozambique.

Southern Africa was full of stories and visions. We were almost drunk on sensations. The roaring of the water at Victoria Falls, the impossible silence of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. And then the other things:dogs in the streets, whole families in Soweto living in one room,a kilometer from clean water.

As we drove towards the setting sun,a quietness fell over us.The road was empty—we hadn’t seen another car for hours. And as I drove, something caught my eye, something moving next to me.I glanced in the mirror of the car;I glanced sideways to the right, and that was when I saw them.Next to us,by the side of the road, thirty, forty wild horses were racing the car,a cloud of dust rising behind them—brown, muscular horses almost close enough to touch them,to smell their hot breath.I didn’t know how long they had been there next to us.

I shouted to Daniel:“Look!”,but he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet.

They raced the car for a few seconds, then disappeared far behind us,a memory of heroic forms in the red landscape. When Daniel woke up an hour later I told him what had happened.

“Wild horses?” he said.“Why didn’t you wake me up?”

“I tried. But they were gone after a few seconds.”

“Are you sure you didn’t dream it?”

“You were the one who was sleeping!”

“Typical,”he said.“The best photos are the ones we never take.”

We checked into a dusty hotel and slept the sleep of the dead.

32.During their journey in Africa, the two travelers

  A.made friends with local residents

Potato chips, which are popular everywhere today, had an unusual origin. The snack came about because of a complaint and an argument. An American named George Crum is credited with inventing potato chips. 36

In 1853,Crum worked in Saratoga Springs as the chef. One day a customer sent his serving of fried potatoes back to the chef, complaining that they should have been sliced thinner.Chef Crum prepared another serving of thinner fried potatoes. The customer again returned them.By this time,Crum was angry. He thinly sliced a large number of potatoes and then salted and fried them. 37 To Crum’s surprise, the customer loved them. The man even requested more.Afterwards, the customer left the restaurant to tell everyone about the delicious new food.

38 What is known is that Crum named his new dish “potato crunches”,although locally they became known as Saratoga Chips. When Crum opened a new restaurant,he put baskets of his chips on all the tables. Some people claimed, however, that potato crunches were not even on the menu.People who are aware of the success of the potato chip industry think it strange that Crum never patented his Saratoga Chips.

An important advance in the potato chip industry came in 1926,when Laura Scudder developed the waxed paper bag at her potato chip factory.Scudder had her workers take home sheets of waxed paper to make into small bags. The workers used their clothing irons to iron the sheets of paper. The heat from the irons quickly melted the wax, causing the sheets of paper to stick together. 39 The tops were then sealed with heated irons. The bags kept the chips fresher so they could be shipped to customers far away.

Three years later,a new type of fryer allowed further development in the cooking of potato chips. With the continuous fryer, many more chips could be cooked at the same time.Today, people all over the country enjoy the tasty snack. 40

A.In the early 1900s,things changed, and several companies around the United States began making potato chips.

B.Although the potato chip began as an accident,it is now one of America’s most popular snack foods.

C.The next day, they hand packed potato chips into the bags, but the job was not quite finished.

D.They sold the chips to neighborhood stores from boxes and glass cases.

E.No one knows exactly how Crum reacted to the experience.

F.He did not, however, intend to invent anything.

The Internet has long been regarded as a wonderful tool that allows students to gain insight to useful resources and information. However, this is not always the case.

The Internet has long been regarded as a wonderful tool that allows students to gain insight to useful resources and information. However, this is not always the case.

As is vividly shown in the picture,a boy is happy with the fact that he can depend on the Internet to finish tasks without any difficulty. It mirrors a common phenomenon.Nowadays, students tend to make use of the Internet to gain information they need.

There are some reasons accounting for it.To begin with, students find it convenient to surf the Internet for useful information, where problems can be solved with the help of several clicks. What’s more, there’s no doubt that the pressure to succeed also causes students to turn to computers for accurate answers. As a result,it’s likely that students will lose interest in studying, which is not beneficial to their overall development.

In my opinion, measures must be taken to solve the problem.Firstly,it is vital that students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities while doing tasks.Besides, what teachers and parents should do is encourage students to be creative. Finally, doing tasks independently is of great significance.
