  Figuringoutwaystohelp

As anyone who’s written a computer program knows, the most complex outcome is really only a collection of simple elements—simple ideas, simple acts—that build on one another.Michael Gohde,a 16-year-old American student at Colorado Springs School, sees the world this way.

When he was 7,he was confused about why there were homeless people sleeping on the streets. He asked his mother why.

“They need our help,” said Betsy deVries-Gohde,doing her best to explain their situation to her son.

After that,Michael saved enough money to buy bottled water and sandwiches to distribute to the needy.

When a family friend was diagnosed with cancer last summer,Michael and his parents purchased a pre-made care package—a collection of products and comfort items especially tailored for patients going through cancer treatment.

After his grandmother went through chemotherapy(化疗)for lymphoma(淋巴瘤),Michael asked his mom what things would make his grandma feel better. She suggested a soft, warm blanket and socks;sugar-free gum;lip balm(香脂);hand sanitizer(消毒剂)and a soft toothbrush.

On Dec.18,after Michael finished his last exam,he headed home to finish packing about 30 gift bags. The next day,he and his mom visited a nearby cancer center to hand out the care packages.

“I had a job and extra money,so I figured, let’s do this,” Michael said.

The teenager has a part-time job working 20 hours a week, helping to write Android mobile applications.

At Rocky Mountain Cancer Center,Mary Matykiewicz held her new socks and thanked “the very nice young man” who’d given them to her.

“You wouldn’t think kids would recognize the need, but they tend to surprise you,” said Jayme Stangier,a patient at the center.

Betsy deVries-Gohde,whose mother died of pancreatic(胰腺的)cancer in 1999,was moved by her son’s compassion(同情心).

“These people are so tender(脆弱的)now with what they’re going through. It feels so good to me to know that he cares,” she said.“Teenagers have their ups and downs, but Michael,he’s pretty steady.”

1.The underlined word “distribute” in the fourth paragraph probably means .

  A.pay a visit B.hand out

  C.hold up D.pick out

2.How does Michael Gohde usually help cancer patients?

A.He goes to the communities to raise funds for them.

B.He helps them find the best treatment via the Internet.

C.He goes to cancer centers and volunteers to take care of them.

D.He gives them gifts that he buys with his own money.

Thenextday,heandhismomvisitedanearbycancercentertohandoutthecarepackages.”

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A.Michael’s parents didn’t support their son spending so much time at the cancer center.

B.Michael’s mother takes pride in her son’s willingness to help those in need.

C.Michael got a part-time job at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center to help look after cancer patients.

D.It was his grandmother’s death from cancer that led Michael to care a lot about cancer patients.

4.Which of the following best describes Michael Gohde?

  A.Confident. B.Fun-loving.

  C.Warm-hearted. D.Serious.

Last Monday,my classmate and I saw a group of people gathering around on our way to school. In order to see what was happening,we got close and found an old woman lying on the ground. The people just stood there, watching and chatting. We were worried about her and decided to take her to the hospital by taxi immediately. It turned out that she slipped and fell. She had to stay in the hospital,so we contacted her family.Soon her son came and thanked us by giving us money. We refused the money and said goodbye to them.Hurrying to school,we found we were late.To our delight, our teacher praised us for what we had done and we felt proud of that.
