We all know that money can't buy happiness, but many times we act as if we were happier with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be rich(when we know the rich aren't happy either);we are trained to want the latest gadget or style that television tells us to want;we want to earn more money because then we'll have a good life.

But none of them will bring us happiness. No matter how much we earn,no matter how much we have in the bank,no matter how nice our clothing or cars or toys, none of them will make us happier. And the sad thing is that it could take us decades to pursue wealth and luxurious items before we realize this.

So what will bring us happiness?Luckily,it's these three things that don't cost a thing. These three things have been proven by surveys of hundreds of thousands of people about what they have, what their lives are like, and how happy they are.

Here they are,the Three Secrets to Happiness:

1.Good relationships. We have a human need to be close to and to be intimate with other human beings. Having good and supportive friendships,a strong marriage or close and loving relationships with our family members will make us much more likely to be happy.

Action steps:Take time, today,to spend time with your loved ones,to tell them what they mean to you,to listen to them, and to develop your relationships with them.

2.Positive thinking. I'm obviously a big proponent of positive thinking as the best way to achieve your goals, and it turns out that it can lead to happiness too. Optimism and selfesteem are some of the best indicators of people who lead happy lives. Happy people feel empowered, take control of their lives, and have a positive outlook on life.

Action steps:Make positive thinking a habit. In fact, this should be one of the first habits you develop. Get into the habit of squashing all negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Instead of “I can't” think “I can”.It may sound silly, but it works for me,every time.

3.Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days—a state we enter when we are completely focused on the work or task before us. We are so buried in our task that we lose track of time. Having work and leisure that get you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness.

People find greatest enjoyment not when they're passively mindless, but when they're absorbed in a mindful challenge.

Action steps:Find work that you have a passion for. Seriously—this is an extremely important step. Find hobbies that you have a passion for. Turn off the TV—this is the opposite of flow—and go outside and do something that truly engages you.

You've been given the Three Secrets to Happiness. Don't waste them!

Which of the following is the most proper title of this passage?

A sure way to destroy your chances of learning how to write skillfully is to believe that writing is a “natural gift” rather than a learned skill. People with such an attitude think that they are the only ones for whom writing is unbearably difficult. They feel that everyone else finds writing easy or at least tolerable (可容忍的). Such people often say. “I’m not any good at writing” or “English was not one of my good subjects.” They imply that they simply do not have a talent for writing, while others do. The result of this attitude is that these people try to avoid writing, and when they do write, they don’t try their best. Their writing fails chiefly because they believe that they don’t have the “natural talent” needed to write. Unless their attitude changes, they probably will not learn how to write effectively.

A realistic attitude about writing must build on the idea that writing is a skill. It is a skill like driving, typing, or cooking; and, like any skill, it can be learned. If you have the determination to learn, you will develop your writing skills by practicing extensively.

Many people find it difficult to do the active thinking that clear writing demands. It is frustrating (使人沮丧的) to discover how much of a challenge it is to transfer thoughts and feelings from one’s head onto a sheet of paper. But writing is not an automatic process: We will not get something for nothing — and we should not expect to. For almost everyone, skillful writing comes from hard work — from determination and sweat. The good news is that the skill of writing can be mastered, and if you are ready to work, you will learn what you need to know.

Why do some people think writing is difficult?

  A. They have no time to practice writing.

  B. They believe few people can write well.

  C. They have no good teachers to help them.

  D. They don’t think writing can be learned.

It can be inferred from Para. 1 that ______.

  A. “natural gift” is the determining factor in one’s success

  B. diligence can result in success

  C. a person without “natural gift’ is sure to fail in writing

  D. attitude determines what one will be

What is the topic of the passage?

  A. Why writing is important.

  B. Whether writing is a born gift.

  C. Benefits of essay writing.

  D. How to improve writing skills.

  D

Mary Moe may look like an average grandmother. But she is not.She just learned how to fly an airplane,a dream she has had since she was a little girl. But Mary Moe could not find time to make her dream come true.At age 34,she was just too busy to think about flying a plane.Lessons were costly.Everything seemed to be working against Mary.So her dream had to wait.

Mary Moe has done a lot during the past 91 years. For much of that time, she wanted to fly,but never had the chance—until now.

Ms.Moe learned about Wish of a Lifetime, a non-profit organization. Its goal is to change the way our society thinks about aging and older adults.Sally Webster works for the group. She said Ms.Moe’s wish is one of hundreds they receive each year.

Susie Danick also believes in this goal. She founded TAD Relocation,a business that helps senior citizens when they move.Ms.Danick gave $5,000 to the Wish of a Lifetime to help seniors realize a dream.Mary Moe was one of them.

Mary Moe received three flying lessons. And on the big day of her first flight, her family and friends all came to cheer her on.Mary’s success made everyone around her excited and proud. It was just a great event,a great day.Flying teacher David Waksberg says she was very calm, which is always important when you’re flying.

It is never too late to spread your wings and try something new.You are never too old to try to make your dreams come true.

Why was Mary Moe’s dream difficult to come true?

A.She had no enough time and money in the past.

B.She did nothing for flying lessons.

  第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads of filling cars and trucks with gas.

Most Americans would find it hard to imagine what life would look like without cars.

.The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

  .

That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean can is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else.

.Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down.

  。

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

  A. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

  B. Americans know cars very well.

  C. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by cars.

  D. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute.

  E. However, the number of vehicles has continued to increase in recent years.

  F. Americans won’t live without cars!

  G. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars.

  Dear MS Chen ,

I’m Li Hua, a student from Class2, Grade3. I’m writing to apply for the position as a student volunteer.

I really want to obtain this precious opportunity because, by offering my service, I will be able to improve my organizational ability, communication skills as well as my confidence in speaking English in public.

As an outgoing girl, I get along well with my classmates. Besides, I have such a good command of English that I am elected as assistant to my English teacher. Successfully, I have lent a helping hand to her in several English activities of my class, which have been appreciated by both teachers and classmates.

I am sure that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. I will be gratefull if you could give me a kind consideration.

  Looking forward to your reply.

  Yours truly,

  Li Hua
