  A

For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they argue, the elevator’s role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns.

If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience—one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage.

In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it,” Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator fide apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.

Today, as the world’s urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2017 Vertical Transportation Industry”—are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.

What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

  A. The general view of elevators.

  B. The particular interests of experts.

  C. The desire for a remarkable machine.

  D. The enthusiasm for transport vehicles.

The author’s purpose in mentioning cars is ______.

  A. to contrast their functions with elevators’

  B. to emphasize the importance of elevators

  C. to reveal their secret war against elevators

  D. to explain people’s preference for elevators

According to Prof. Bernard, what has made the elevator ride different from other life experiences?

  A. Vertical direction.

  B. Lack of excitement.

  C. Little physical space.

  D. Uncomfortable conditions.

The author urges readers to consider ______.

  A. the exact number of elevator lovers

  B. the serious future situation of elevators

  C. the role of elevators in city development

  D. the relationship between cars and elevators

  B

Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险)but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.

Larry first began diving when he was his daughter’s age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were not even allowed to dive.

After the first expedition, Larry’s later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, his was limited

to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.

Larry’s first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them .Fortunaly for him,a man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry didn’t even know what the time was how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.

Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age.He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition.Already, she looked like she was much braver than Larry had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.

In what way was this expedition different for Larry?

  A.His daughter had grown up.

B.He had become a famous diver.

C.His father would dive with him.

D.His daughter would dive with him.

What can be inferred from Paragraph2?

  A.Larry had some privileges.

  B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.

C.Divers had to buy diving equipment.

D.Ten-year-old children were permitted to dive.

Why did Larry have to stay in a cage underwater sometimes?

  A.To protect himself from danger.

B.To dive into the deep water.

  C.To admire the underwater view.

  D.To take photos more conveniently.

What can be learned from the underlined sentence?

  A.Larry didn’t wear a watch.

  B. Larry was not good at math.

  C. Larry had a poor memory.

  D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.

  C

After signing an agreement to recognize India as a nuclear power on March 3, US President George W. Bush might be expecting a little Indian love.

The agreement marks a major breakthrough for New Delhi. It allows India to depend on American atomic technology and fuel to meet its increasing energy needs, if American government permits.

Yet many Indians have mixed feelings towards Bush and his country. According to an opinion poll(民意测验)carried out last week by the Indian magazine Outlook, twothirds of the answers say that Bush is a “friend of India”. But 72 percent say that America is “a bully(欺凌弱小者)”, and 59 per cent say that India has “compromised on its foreign policy” to become closer to the US.

“It’s this unilateral(单边的)thing that makes people upset; you want everything your way, and as long as the world toes your line, it’s fine,” says Anand Mahindra, owner of a computer company in New Delhi.

“But you are the ones who used nuclear bombs in Japan. You used chemical weapons in Vietnam. And you’re the ones driving all those gasguzzling(暴食的) cars. You have no moral(道德的) ground to stand on. Who are you to tell us what to do?”

Many factors tie America and India together—democratic(民主的) traditions, economic ties, military(军事的) cooperation, and common views on the war on terrorism. But Bush and his counterpart(对方), Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, admitted that it may take time for the two partners to become close friends.

The key to deepening that relationship will be average Indians. Many of them love American culture, but that doesn’t mean they buy everything America has to sell.

“Indians have always felt close to America on a popular level, to American films, to clothes, to music”, says Dipankar Gupta, an Indian sociologist(社会学家).

“But at the same time, many Indians see America as too domineering(专横的). It’s like a wife who wishes her husband... would give her more room to grow.”

India hopes to depend on the agreement for support.

A hobby is an investment of time. It also can be an investment of money and commitment. Many people choose to develop more than one type of hobby.

When it comes to choosing the hobby, consider the following factors.

Hobbies are usually an activity of some sort that brings out a certain skill that you have. When you have a talent like painting or woodworking, it can be easy to determine which hobby suits your skill.

Skill can be developed and challenged as you go along. It is not a necessary requirement. A hobby is fitting because you love it, not because you’re a professional at it.

Some people particularly enjoy taking part in hobbies that they can do in a group with others. It can be a lot more fun to become a member of a hobby group than to sit alone in your basement.

It’s important to share interests and network with other hobby enthusiasts that do what you do.

Hobbies are generally an activity that you undertake because of the joy it brings you. Of course many people have discovered the joy that also comes with a hobby that earns you a living.

__Just make sure you make the choice that fits your lifestyle and personal preference.

But most of the skilled hobbies like art, building or writing have a series of lessons or tutorials that you can take to further your skills. In some cases it’s a really good idea to take lessons, especially if you are clueless as to where or how to begin. Step by step books for most hobbies can often be found in bookstores as well.

  A. However, hobbies don’t have to be skill related.

  B. Most hobbies can easily be done within your own home, at your leisure.

  C. Look one up or start your own.

  D. Read hobby books to learn more about your chosen hobby!

  E. Make a list of things that you enjoy or don’t know about.

  F. It can be a necessary part of selecting the hobby that is right for you.

  G. Whether it’s full time, part time or not at all, you must decide whether your hobby applies to you.

M:Oh,that’s right.I went out shopping.I suppose you phoned me in the morning, didn’t you?

W:Yes,it was late morning when I phoned.

  M:Why did you phone me?

W:I phoned to ask if you’d like to come to dinner on Sunday.

M:Oh,what a pity! I’d love to have come, but actually,Sunday would have been difficult too, because I went on a river trip practically the whole day.I don’t know whether you know the trip.

  W:Oh,yes.

  M:Well,how did the dinner-party go?

W:Well,we had a wonderful time.I thought you might enjoy it because Tom and his wife were coming. You’ve met them before.

M: Tom, yes, I rather like him.

W: And we had a lovely dinner, one of your favorites, green cabbage, soup and fresh salad.

  M: Very nice too.

W: And they asked about you.

M: And how are they getting on?

W: Oh, very well. They were enjoying the party very much.

  M: Ah, good.

  Text 10

Most people sleep at night, but Frank sleeps during the day. Frank is a night watchman. His job is to guard a large factory. It is a lonely job because there is no one to talk with.

Frank likes his job. He knows that it is important to guard the factory at night . If he hears a noise, he goes quickly to see what it is. Most of the time he walks around inside the big building, but he also walks around outside part of the time. When he is tired, he can sit on a chair by the door. In the winter it is very cold. He always wears a warm coat when he leaves the factory.

Tonight when Frank goes outside, he hears a noise near a dark corner of the factory. He goes very quietly toward the noise to see if someone is there, but he sees only a small dog. Frank smiles and talks to the dog. It looks cold and sad. He takes the dog inside the factory, and the happy dog follows him around.

During the rest of the night Franks is not lonely. A dog is a good friend for a night watchman.

【解题思路】根据文章第一段第二句“Dr.Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this is a misunderstanding,”并结合本段第一句“For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles。” 故选A。

【解题思路】根据文章第三段倒数第二句“We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.”

And for the people who really, really love them. it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just

what kind of force they are.”,并结合对本文的整体理解可推知,作者敦促读者们重新考虑一下电梯在城市发展中的作用。

He decided to take his daughter along

【解题思路】根据第二段最后一句“Children his age were not even allowed to dive”可知,他这样年龄的孩子是不允许潜水的。 故选A项。

【解题思路】根据第三段倒数第二、三句“Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search.Sometimes,he was limited to a cage underwater....” 故选A项。

The diving spots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures”可知,那片潜水区有大量的鱼和海洋生物,以至他忘记了时间,不知道在多少个区域潜水和拍了多少张照片,因此根据画线句可推知,他很享受那次冒险。

  Dear David,

I’m glad to receive your letter and know you’re learning the Chinese culture. The pictures you have seen in the blog show the Chinese traditional virtue that the children should be dutiful to the parents.

In Picture One, a young father is washing feet for his old mother, setting a good example for his little son. And in Picture Two, the son who has grown up is helping his father by the arm, who has turned old. That’s to say, the son is dutiful to his father as his father does to his mother in Picture One.

In my opinion, the pictures tell us that if we are dutiful to the old when we are young, our next generation will carry forward the fine tradition.

I hope my explanation can be helpful to you, and look forward to your reply.

  Yours Sincerely,

  Li Hua
