Marise fitted little Mark’s cap down over his ears and buttoned his blue coat close to his throat.
“Now you big children,” she said, with an anxious accent,to Paul and Elly standing with their school-books done up,“be sure to keep an eye on Mark at break.Don’t let him run and get all hot and then sit down in the wind without his coat.Remember,it’s his first day at school, and he’s only six.”
She kissed his round, smooth, rosy cheek once more, and let him go.Elly bent and took her little brother’s hand in hers. She said nothing, but her look on the little boy’s face was loving and maternal.
Paul assured his mother seriously,“Oh,I’ll look out for Mark, all right.”
Mark wriggled and said,“I can look out for myself without Paul!”
Their mother looked for a moment deep into the eyes of her older son,so clear,so quiet,so unchanging and true.“You’re a good boy,Paul,a real comfort,”she told him.
To herself she thought,“Yes,all his life he’ll look out for people and get no thanks for it.”
She followed the children to the door, wondering at her heavy heart. What could it come from? There was nothing in life for her to fear of course, except for the children, and it was stupid to fear for them. They were all safe;safe and strong and rooted deep in health, and little Mark was stepping off into his own life as the others had done. But she felt afraid. What could she be afraid of?
She could not bear to let them leave her and stood with them in the open door-way for a moment.Elly rubbed her soft cheek against her mother’s hand.Paul, seeing his mother tremble in the keen March air, said,“Mother,if Father were here he’d make you go in.That’s a thin dress. And your teeth are just chattering.” “Yes,you’re right,Paul,” she agreed;“it’s foolish of Me!”
The children gave her a hearty round of good-bye hugs and kisses, and went down the stone-flagged path to the road. They were chatting to each other as they went.Their voices sounded at first loud and gay in their mother’s ears. Then they sank to a murmur,as the children ran along the road.
When the murmur died away to silence, there seemed no sound left in the gray valley, empty and motionless between the steep dark walls of pine-covered mountains.

Half a year before graduation from college,my son David began to seek a job.Due to the financial crisis, the competition was ever-fierce.My son targeted a company that was located in a coastal city.It was intended to employ only one person among more than twenty candidates,I said to David,“You should not harbor too much hope for fear that you would feel terribly disappointed when you fail.” He said to me,“I am not afraid of disappointment. As long as I try, there will always be hope!”
Three young men could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed.Everything seemed to go quite well and David entered the final round in a week.
Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interview strategies my son prepared were not useful at all.The interviewer said the company would inform them of the result in 3 days.On the morning of the third day,David received the text from the company that he was not employed.David felt disappointed.
In nightfall that day,David suddenly told me excitedly on phone that he had been employed.Greatly surprised,I asked him,“What’s the whole matter?” David told me that he received another text saying that he was employed.David felt very confused about it.Later he found out the first text sent to him was also part of the test in the interview.Three men received the same text this morning and only David’s reply was satisfying to the company.I asked my son,“How did all of your reply?” My son said,“One did not reply. The other said ‘Goodbye’ and I said ‘Thank you’.”
Only then did I know that my son’s “hope” came in that way. That is,when you feel disappointed,do not forget to say “Thank you” to the one who disappoints you.Actually,it is a piece of cake to say “Thank you”.Saying “Thank you” shows respect for others’ work and demonstrates your grand generosity. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!

The Children’s Book-show Competition is a chance for young readers to be writers.
Reading,it seems,is coming back into fashion,if a survey by the famous National Literacy Trust (the NLT) is true.It shows that the percentage of children who admit enjoying reading has grown for the first time in the past 8 years.
So it’s a good time to launch a competition that includes a shed-load of new books for schools as prizes. The Children’s Book-show Competition, backed by The Independent,is taking to the roads again from the start of next term, with a nation-wide tour of 15 big cities, featuring a line-up of a dozen children’s writers and illustrators(插图画家)aiming to persuade pupils to follow their footsteps.
The competition, launched by the children’s writer and illustrator Jessica Souhami, has two categories:the under-nine’s and nine to 13-year-olds.
Children are asked to choose their favorite fairy or folk tale and set it in an extraordinary place.
Then they are to retell it with the aid of drawings and writings—whether it is set at sea,on a distant planet,in the future or in the past. The closing date for the competition is 30 November.
“Tell your tale in pictures and in words,” say the organizers of the competition.“It can be in a picture book or comic-book format.”
The winner of each competition will receive a signed copy of a book by each of the 12 authors involved in this year’s tour, plus £150 worth of books for their school. The runners-up will receive a signed copy of Souhami’s new book.
