The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep.A few dogs started barking at it.The elephant woke up in terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.

That didn’t stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.

Parbati Barua’s father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk.He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant roundup—how to catch wild elephants.

Parbati hasn’t always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to a boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life.“Life in the city is too dull.Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase,” she says.

But Parbati doesn’t catch elephants just for fun.“My work,” she says,“ is to rescue men from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from men.” And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years.Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land.It is now fighting back.Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village,Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.

The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion.A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant.“Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,” she said,as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

  1.For Parbati,catching elephants is mainly to ________.

  A.get longlasting excitement

B.keep both men and elephants safe

C.send them back to the jungle

  D.make the angry elephants tame

2.Before Parbati studied in a boarding school,________.

A.she spent her time hunting with her father

B.she learned how to sing love songs

C.she had already been called the elephant princess

D.she was taught how to hunt tigers

3.Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they revenge because ________.

A.they are caught and sent for heavy work

B.illegal hunters capture them and kill them

C.they are attacked and their land gets limited

D.dogs often bark at them and chase them

4.The passage starts with an elephant story in order to explain that ________.

A.people easily fall victim to elephants’attacks

B.the manelephant relationship is getting worse

C.elephant tamers are in short supply

D.dogs are as powerful as elephants

Fear is one of the most basic human emotions.1.____________ From the time we’re babies,we are equipped with the ability to respond with fear when we sense danger or feel unsafe.

People fear things or situations that make them feel unsafe. For instance, someone who isn’t a strong swimmer might have a fear of deep water. In this case, the fear is helpful because it cautions the person to stay safe.2.____________

A fear can be healthy if it cautions a person to stay safe around something that could be dangerous. But sometimes a fear is unnecessary and causes more caution than the situation calls for.3.____________ Whether it’s giving a report in class, speaking at an assembly,or reciting lines in the school play, speaking in front of others is one of the most common fears people have.

People tend to avoid the situations or things they fear.4.____________ In fact,it can be the opposite.Avoiding something scary reinforces a fear and keeps it strong.

People can overcome unnecessary fears by giving themselves the chance to learn about and gradually get used to the thing or situation they’re afraid of.For example, people who fly despite a fear of flying can become used to unfamiliar situations like takeoff or turbulence(湍流).They learn what to expect and have a chance to watch what others do to relax and enjoy the flight.5.____________

那句话是:You Are Going Places(你前途无量)。

They __17__ my spirit from being down也说明了该题答案。

  2.选A。 deal with表示“对付”;help with帮助做……;talk with和……

seat是使役动词,表示“使坐下”,be seated意为“坐下,就座”;sit是不及物动词,应为where they sat。

  5.选A。

  7.选A。

11.选A。 I took their plates back to the kitchen排除C、D两项;complete往往用于完成“建筑物”“工程”“书籍”等;而finish指做完手中的事情,如:“用完”“吃完”等。

  14.选A。

put down放下,镇压;take over接管;point out指出。

  19.选A。 I’m now a coanchor(联合主持人)of a studentproduced television __20__.

  20.选C。a studentproduced television show表示学生制作的电视节目。

I was in college where my father passed away. One evening,a man visited me and after the while,he asked some question about my studies.I told him I did not want to study anymore. He reminded of me how my father had sent me to the best college in our city.Did I want to fulfill his father’s dream or did I want to called a failure?
