You know how wonderful you are,and you know that others know how wonderful you are,but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do,but the good news is that there is.Don't let jealousy spoil your relationships.Tackle it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is,but if you want to save your friendship you'll have to do just that.Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally conceited),just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you.If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling.Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If,for example,(s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you.Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise.Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy.Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be tinged by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can't,be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.

  答案 C

Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would,is it the best solution?

  Despite what it promises,GM

technology actually has not increased the production potential(潜力)of any crop. In fact studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analysed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.

Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The

promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Family Farm Coalition.

At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report.

As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.

13.The author develops the second paragraph mainly________.

  A. by classification

  B. by comparison

  C. by example

  D. by process

根据第二段第三行的for instance(例如)可知,C项(by example通过举例)正确,排除by classification“通过分类”/by comparison“通过类比”/by process“根据事物发展流程”。

14.What does the underlined word “boost” in the third paragraph probably mean?

  A. Control.

  B. Evaluate.

  C. Obtain.

  D. Increase.

15.GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from________.

  A. practising “green” farming

  B. use of less chemicals

  C. fair distribution of their crops D. using more crops for fuel

16.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?

  A. Optimistic.

  B. Defensive.

  C. Disapproving.

  D. Casual.

George Prochnik would like the world to_put_a_sock_in_it. He makes his case in a new book, listening for Meaning in a World of Noise. Here he explains himself (using his indoor voice):

“We've become so accustomed to noise, there's almost a deep prejudice against the idea that silence might be beneficial. If you tell someone to be quiet, you sound like an old man. But it's never been more important to find continuing quiet. Silence focuses us, improves our health, and is a key to lasting peace and satisfaction.”

“We need to excite people about the sounds you start to hear if you

merely quiet things down a little. During a Japanese tea ceremony, the smallest sounds becomes a kind of art—the spoons making a light ringing sound on a bowl, the edges of a kimono (和服)brushing against the floor.”

“Deaf people are very attentive(专注的)in almost every aspect of life. If two deaf people are walking together, using sign language, they constantly watch out for each other and protect each other by paying steady attention to the other. They are connected yet also fully aware of their surroundings. Even deaf teenagers! We in the hearing world can learn from them. If we remove the powerful blasts(一阵阵)of noise, we become aware of an extraordinarily rich world around us—of little soft and the sound of footsteps, of bird songs and ice cracking(开裂声). It's astonishing how beautiful things sound when you can really listen. ”

  17. What does the phrase “to put a sock in it” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

  A. To be quiet. B. To be colorful.

  C. To be full of love. D. To be attentive to someone.

  答案:A。

  18. What does Prochnik say about us?

  A. We are used to quietnesss.

  B. We have to put up with noise.

  C. We do not think silence to be beneficial.

  D. We do not believe lasting peace to be available.

  19. Which of the following is TRUE according to Prochnik?

  A. We need more sounds in our lives.

  B. There is

nothing to be learned from the deaf.

  C. We are not aware how rich the world around us is.

  D. There is too much noise at a Japanese tea ceremony.

  20. It can be inferred from the text that ________.

  A. we can benefit a lot from old people

  B. it is a good idea to use sign language

  C. there is no escape from the world of sound

  D. it is possible to find how beautiful things sound

It's astonishing how beautiful things sound when you can really listen.

  Dear Editor,

I’m Zhang Xiaoming, a student from Grade 3.I am writing to discuss the traffic problem near our school gate.

With so many parents coming to pick up their children, traffic jams are frequent near the school gate, causing much inconvenience to us students as well as our teachers and passers-by.Many people have been worrying about the hidden traffic problems. So I strongly recommend some effective and urgent measures be taken.First, we should encourage students to ride their bicycles or walk to school by themselves instead of taking cars, which will not only help reduce the jam but benefit students’ health as well.It is also a good idea to allow junior students to leave school 10 minutes earlier than others.Besides, cars should not be allowed to park near the school gate.

I do hope my suggestions can be considered and the problem can be solved soon.

  Yours,

  Zhang Xiaoming

The College Entrance Examination is drawing near. However, most students of senior three don’t know how to connect rest, doing exercise with study. In their eyes they should sacrifice their rest time in order to get high scores, which results in poor health and low efficiency of learning. (48)

Just as a famous saying goes: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. we should be aware that nothing is more valuable than health which is a foundation of success. Therefore, on the one hand, we should make preparations for the exam fully and systematically. On the other hand, we should relieve stress by means of relaxation and doing sports. (111)

In conclusion, only when we have adequate rest and doing some sports can we study more efficiently. (128)
