ITHACA, N.Y. — Climate experts have bad news for those wishing for the picturesque, snowy Christmas scene: Not this year.

Climate experts at Cornell University have made their annual predictions about the probability of a white Christmas, while noting that December is turning up fine as the 12th month in a row of above-normal temperatures in the Northeast.

Pinkham Notch, N.H., tops the list from the Northeast Regional Climate Center with a 95 percent probability of an inch or more of snow on the ground on Dec. 25. New York City gets a 12 percent chance of a white Christmas.

Cornell Climatologist Jessica Rennells said today the predictions are based on a 50-year average. With above-normal temperatures expected to continue in the Northeast for the next week or two, Rennells says the real odds(可能性)of a snowy holiday are likely lower than the long-term trend would suggest.

But such odds are based on historical precedent, not forecasts, which state climatologist Dave Robinson says make the possibility of a white Christmas even more remote, since above-average temperatures are expected to sweep the Garden State over the next two weeks. Still, there's a chance that enough cold air could sneak(悄悄行动)through to produce a quick burst of snow, Robinson said."But I would just put that in the 'hope springs permanent type," he said.

Robinson said there's typically a 20 percent chance of snow on the ground Christmas Day in the Newark-New Brunswick region of the state, but just a 5 percent chance of snow actually falling on the day, based on historical trends.

36.The main idea of the passage is ___________.

  A. Some climate experts predict if there is snow on Christmas day.

  B. Climate experts have bad news about the Christmas weather.

  C. Some climate experts have different opinions about the weather.

  37. What may the word precedent mean in the fifth paragraph? ___________.

  A.An exact pressure.

  B. An action or official decision.

C.The way that things have always been done.

  D. Something of the same type that has happened or existed before.

38.What is the weather most people in New York City looking forward to on Christmas? ___________.

  A. Rainy.

  B.Snowy.

  C.Sunny.

  D. Cloudy.

39.The possibility of there being snow will be ___________in New York City.

  A. Little.

  B.95%.

  C.100%.

  D. 50%.

  40. Which is true according to the passage? ___________.

  A. The historical precedent is important for a prediction.

  B. All predictions above are according to the historical precedent.

  C. The experts at Cornell University didn’t predict Christmas weather before.

D.The temperatures in the Northeast will be unusual for the next week or two.

Coaches and parents need to stop pressuring their kids in sports. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past 30 years fractures(骨折 increased by 56 percent in girls and 32 percent in boys, due to overuse of the forearm. This shows that kids who get hurt always continue to play because of fear of their parents or coaches being disappointed or upset.

Parents and coaches obviously feel the need to push their children to do their best. But is that sometimes too much? A coach named Marilyn in Detroit says she recently was at an indoor game where one of her players hit the side board. The

player’s father immediately yelled at him for playing poorly, rather than asking how he was feeling. such situations are common.

When a child gets pressured from an adult, it can affect his or her confidence. They start feeling like they will never be good enough to satisfy their parents, and start actually believing they’re not good players. Between the ages 8 and 18, children rely on adults to tell them what’s right and wrong. But if all they’re getting is negative feedback, how do they know what they’re doing right?

Everyone knows that if you want to get better at something, you have to practice and practice. But recently studies from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that too much training can lead to overuse injuries. In some cases, parents and coaches do in fact acknowledge their kids injuries, but then decide to do nothing about it. This is mostly because their kid is the “star player” and the team “can’t afford” to play without him or her.

  46. The general idea of the passage is ____________.

  A. Coaches and parents shouldn’t continue to put too much pressure on the players

  B. Most players worry about them making their parents disappointed.

  C. Coaches agree with the parents on how to train the good players.

  D. The team “can’t afford” to play without the players.

  B. How to feed children on some food.

  C. Good results in playing sport games.

  D. Advice, criticism about how successful something is.

  48. What is the writer’s attitude towards to parents and coaches?

  A. Supportive

  B. Objective

  C. Doubtful

  D. Opposite

  49. The increasing fractures means that _____________.

  A. parents and coaches don’t care about children

Jiang Wen is at the top of the the world of Chinese cinema, that is. His year-end release Let the Bullets Fly has just broken the box-office record for a domestic(国内的) film with some 700 million yuan ($107 million) in gross receipts.

He does not need others to tell him how great he is - not any more.

That does not mean he is not proud of Bullets. It‘s just that Bullets, for him, is fun. He is aware of all the political interpretations of his story that have turned up across the Web and mainstream media.

“No, I did not mean to put political meanings into the story,” he says straightforwardly.

The Goose Town, the central setting for the movie, has come to symbolize China for some film buffs with a political leaning. Yet, Jiang repeatedly uses the location as an outing to the dark world of film making.

The most brilliant touches in his movies all seem to cross the stream of reality, for example, in Bullets opens with a train pulled by white horses.

“I did not invent this set-up. For 30 years in the early 20th century, there was a segment(段) of rail line in Northeast China that was powered by horses,” he explains, without getting into the symbolic significance of such devices. “You may imagine the most unlikely scenes, and you‘ll find that fact is stranger than fiction.”

Jiang Wen was trained at the Central Drama Academy - as an actor. Yet he is known for his brave visualizations(表现力). He prefers scripts read to him by someone who can turn the words alive. His storyboards, as drafts for each shot, tend to be rough. But his verbal description of each scene is so vigorous the listener can quickly recreate each frame in his or her mind‘s eye.

The only filmmaker whose work Jiang admits as having an impact on him is Martin Scorsese.

  51. The passage mainly referred to that

  .

  C. To be proud.

  C. For fun.

  D. For brave visualizations.

  53. Why did Jiangwen say the train pulled by white horses wasn’t invented by himself?

  .

  A. Because he was telling a lie.

  B. Because he wanted to fool people.

  C. Because there was a segment of railline powered by horses in old days.

  D. Because he thinks the film should be more interesring than the fact.

  54. What works have a great impact on Jiangwen?

  A. Let the Bullets Fly.

  B. Martin Scorsese’s work.

  C. the Central Drama Academy’s works.

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided.

  Try physical activity.

  57

Running, walking, playing tennis, and working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

  Make time for yourself.

Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work.

  58

Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

  Take care of yourself.

  59

If you easily get angry and can’t sleep well enough, or if you are not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

  60

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do, and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important task first.

  A. You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest.

  B. Do whatever you like and want to do.

  C. The following are suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

  D. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.

  E. When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity.

  F. You could smile to yourself in front of a mirror every day.

The discussion about reading famous classic works

We are having a discussing about reading classics in our school. The majority of students in our school think reading classics can help us know about some cultures and customs all over the world in old times. And it can also cultivate our minds and improve our characters. Besides, we can learn something useful from classics because they have something to do with our life today. However, some students think it isn’t necessary for us to read the classics because the language used in classics is quite different from that used today, which makes them difficult to be understood. They also think the classics are old-fashioned and boring.

In my view, it is necessary to read the classics in our spare time. Because it can’t only enrich our knowledge we can’t get in our daily life, but also enables us to obtain the food for the spirit about the ancient cultures. Meanwhile, we can care about nature and society by reading classics, so I like classics very much.
