  第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分 )

  (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

It’s 5pm on a Friday and I'm standing in a coffee shop above Shibuya crossing - one of the most busiest place in Japan where more than a thousand of Tokyo’s smartly dressed people gather at eight points, ready to cross - then rush straight for each other. It looks like they must bump into each other, but It’s amazing that they all manage to reach the other side safely.

But the real reason I'm here is that I want to see people crash. I want businessmen to knock into each other, their umbrellas flying off their arms, and uniformed schoolchildren hitting grannies. Why may I see this now, but wouldn't have had the chance even a year ago? It’s very simple - smartphones.

Smartphone use is booming in Japan. In 2017, only about a quarter of Japanese used them, most being perfectly happy with their everyday mobiles. But now more than half of all Japanese now own a smartphone and the number is rising fast. But with that rise has grown another phenomenon - the smartphone walk. Those people who're staring at a phone screen adopt this kind of pace- their head down, arms outreached, looking like zombies(僵尸)trying to find human prey(猎食).

Surprisingly, an American named Michael Cucek who has lived here for more than 20 years told me smartphone walk probably wouldn’t be a long-term problem. Japanese phone manner is in fact better than anywhere else in the world - hardly anyone speaks on their phones on trains, and teenagers wouldn't dare broadcast music out of one. If things got truly bad at Shibuya, the police would just start shouting at people to look up.

But really, is the smartphone walk such an annoying problem? There's only one way to find out. So I leave the coffee shop, head down to the crossing and start typing an email, promising myself I won't look up until I get to the other side. When they start walking past me, it's my time to cross. As I step forward, the experience quickly becomes nervous - legs jump in and out of my vision without warning, while shopping bags fly towards my face before being pulled away at the last moment. I'm sure I'm going to get hit, but after a few seconds I relax. It’s OK. Everyone's reacting for me.

I expect to see two smartphone walkers just like me. But instead I find a young couple, very much in love and very much refusing to let each other’s hands go just to give way to a fool on his smartphone. The girl gives me such a look of dislike that I quickly apologize and rush round them. That look was enough to ensure I'll never be smartphone walking again.

  21.From paragraph 1, we can know _____________.

  A. people at Shibuya crossing always bump into each other.

  B. more than a thousand of people gather at Shibuya crossing every day.

  C. more than a thousand of people are ready to rush in a competition every day.

  D. more than a thousand of people at Shibuya crossing make it a busy one in Japan.

22.Why does the author stand in a coffee shop above Shibuya crossing?

  A. Because he is waiting for somebody.

  B. Because he can have a good view from there.

  C. Because he wants to see what would happen because of smartphones.

  D. Because it’s interesting to see businessmen’s umbrellas flying off their arms

23.How does Michael Cucek find smartphone walk in Japan?

  A. He found it by accident when he lives here.

  B. Japanese pay much attention to their phone manner in public.

  C. The police in Shibuya are too strict with people’s phone manner.

  D. Smartphone walk in Japan has a deep root.

24.How does the author confirm whether smartphone walk is annoying or not?

  A. By personal experimenting

  B. By comparing with other way of walk

  C. By giving example.

  D. By explaining the traffic rules patiently

The Rugby (英式橄榄球) World Cup is currently being held in New Zealand. The tournament, due to finish on October 23, is living up to the famous English saying, “Rugby is a thug's (暴徒) game played gentlemen. ”

The games are physically aggressive; the tackles (冲撞) on the pitch are brutal; but the end of each match is a civilized affair. Players shake hands and applaud each other. Of course, the other side to this saying is: "Football is a gentleman's game played by thugs. " Indeed, unlike soccer players, rugby players don't often question the referee's (裁判员) decisions or pretend to be injured when they are not.

“Football could learn a lot from rugby," said Brian Moore, a former England rugby player "The wonderful spirit of rugby is: there is a gentlemanly code to it. You play hard on the pitch, but you always respect your opponent..

Rugby is mainly played in Europe. Australia, New Zealand and parts of Africa. "It is more enjoyable to play than soccer because you are always involved in the game," said Peter, a Welsh rugby coach. "Rugby is also a far superior test of strength, stamina (耐力) and determination. "

Most professional rugby players are large, strong and weigh over 90 kilograms. People who play the sport need to be tough and be prepared to get hurt. Black eyes, broken bones, lost teeth and being knocked unconscious—all these are common injuries. Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is blind in one eye thanks to a rugby accident at school.

In England, children begin playing the game at school at the age of 8. When they enter high school, many begin to play full contact rugby. Children are taught to play for around one hour a week during their PE lessons. Most schools have a rugby team. Children who play for the school team are usually the sportiest kids, and are seen as brave and athletic.

25.What can be concluded from the first three paragraphs?

  A. Football players are not real gentlemen.

  B. There is a better spirit in playing rugby than football.

  C. Football players are not as athletic as rugby players.

  D. Brian Moore thinks that rules should be stricter in football.

26.According to the passage, Peter thinks ______.

  A. rugby players pretend to be injured when they are not

  B. rugby is not very popular in America and Asia

  C. rugby makes people enjoy sports better than soccer

  D. rugby needs players' strong will rather than strength

27.The example of Gordon Brown is mentioned in order to

  .

  A. prove that playing rugby can earn people fame

  B. explain why Gordon Brown is blind in one eye

  C. support the point that rugby players often get hurt

  D. warn teenagers against playing rugby at school

28.What can we infer from the passage?

  A. Teenagers will lose interest in football.

  B. English children have a talent for rugby.

  C. Playing rugby doesn't involve skills.

  D. Rugby is not suitable for everyone.

The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.

"For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all," said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.

The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi.

The 1,776-km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country's first high-speed railway to be built in a high-altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.

"We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season," Liang said. "Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang's development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang's annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project's management department in Xinjiang.

  29. How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?

  A. about 12 hours. B. About 6 hours.

  C. About 18 hours.

  D. About 24 hours.

  30. What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?

  A. It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.

  B. It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.

  C. All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.

  D. It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

  31. From the passage we can learn _______.

  A. Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times

  B. the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad

  C. the high-speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone-dry sands

  D. the old railway lines can only carry goods now

  32. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. The new high-speed railway line is good for all people to go home.

  B. The new high-speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.

  C. Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.

  D. Businessmen seldom went home for Spring Festival before.

  D

It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.

People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they knock students. Nor do those who complain about falling academic standards.

The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible workforce. Many hold down full-time jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event.

The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools.

Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking to accounting and computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers?

Answer: Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. The notion of transforming one’s self through study alone has disappeared. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor, and the status conferred by a good job.

There are other consequences. Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework. That’s the secret behind falling academic standards. Students have become consumers. They want grades and certifications.

Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills.

There’s a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape.

Worse, it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies (雅皮士). The vast majority are, at least, good-natured semi-literates.

The time has run out for philosophical debates about fixed courses of study. What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should.

  33. The author’s purpose in writing this article is to __________.

  A. awaken the whole society to the problems today’s college students face

  B. warn Americans that academic standards are falling

  C. advise college students to study hard

  D. provide a suggestion that only full-time students be enrolled

34.The most suitable word to describe the author’s feelings about today’s college students

  is _________.

  A. criticize

  B. sympathize

  C. complain

  D. urge

35.Which of the following suggestions will the author not agree with?

  A. We should encourage students to give up full-time jobs.

  B. Families should offer their children more help financially.

  C. We should stand up and say something for today’s college students.

  D. We should make more strict regulations to force students to study hard.

  38

Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?

Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them.

Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.

  据我校大部分教师反映,近些年来,随着网络的普及,越来越多的学生的书写能力明显退步了。为了改变这种局面,保护传统民族文化——汉字,我校学生会提出以下倡议:

  减少课外上网时间,多读书;

  养成每天记日记的好习惯,练习书写;

  少发电子邮件,尽量动手给亲朋好友写书信。

  请你根据以上内容,代学生会写一封英文倡议书。
