My name is Megan Grattan, a resident of Cedar Springs

for over fifteen years. From the beginning of my first high

school year at Cedar Springs High School, I wished for

something different. I met some foreign exchange students in

my school that year. Their stories were my inspiration to

pursue a crazy dream. I wanted to be an exchange student,

too. I wanted to experience something new every day and to learn a new language and a new way of life.

  After a year and

  a

  half of paperwork and

  emails,I am

  now living in Aalborg, Denmark.

It is the fourth largest city in Denmark. Aalborg is nothing like Cedar Springs. Here, I have learned how to use a bus to get into town and how to walk

to a convenience store for things I need.

I even walk to school every day. While adjusting to a sixhour time difference from home, I have to get used to darkness setting in only around 4 p.m..

Christmas in Denmark has been absolutely incredible. Aalborg Downtown has endless shops along streets for foottraffic only, all decorated in lights and flowers throughout the season. The greatest thing about my Danish Christmas was the food. Christmas Eve and the three Christmas days were all filled with food! My host family and I had several dinners that consisted of pork, duck, potatoes, gravy and much more. The rice pudding, or, ris ala mande, is a unique dessert in Aalborg. One of my favorite Christmas treats was definitely

aebleskiver which are pancakelike balls that are dipped(浸)in sugars and jam.

I have lived here for only four weeks, but to my family and me, it feels like it has been much longer. At night, I

miss my family very much. The culture shock has been overwhelming(巨大的),

and I still need time to adapt myself to the life here. Yet I love every minute I spend here in Denmark. I cannot wait to see what the next month has in store for me, while I learn more about this amazing country and its people.

  1. What can we learn about Megan Grattan?

  A. She is a resident of Aalborg, Denmark.

  C. Megan Grattan goes to a convenience store on foot in Cedar Springs

  D. Megan Grattan often goes to school on foot in Cedar Springs

  3. In other Danish cities,

people have no chance of eating______.

  3.B。细节理解题。根据第三段的倒数第二句“The rice pudding,

  mande是Aalborg独有的食品,在丹麦的其他城市是享受不到的。

Once upon a time, Birbal and Akbar walked alongside a beautiful lake.

A simple question occurred to Birbal: how far a man can go to have money? He expressed it to Akbar, who sat down and touched the water in the lake while listening

to Birbal. He at once took his hand out realizing the biting cold. He exclaimed that no one would ever spend a night in this cold water for any amount of money. Birbal believed that someone could. Akbar as determined on his belief as ever challenged Birbal to bring one such person, and he would grant that man one thousand gold coins.

  Birbal kept

looking for such a man everywhere until he found one.

He happened to be a poor guy desperate enough to risk a cold night to have the gold coins.

Akbar, hearing the news, sent his trusty guards to make sure that the poor guy stayed in water for the whole night. Surprisingly, the next morning, the poor man came to Akbar after completing his challenge,

sound and healthy, and demanded his much awaited reward. Akbar couldn't believe it and asked how he managed to spend the whole night out there. The poor man talked about a light post that he saw around the lake which he kept in focus all night.

He believed that by keeping his attention focused on the lamp,

he managed to avoid thinking about the cold.

  To his surprise,

Akbar refused to give him the gold coins as he used lamp's energy to keep himself warm.

  The poor man,

  disappointed and hurt,

informed Birbal. Birbal didn't make it to the court next day. When

  Akbar inquired,

  Birbal conveyed the message that

  he

  couldn't

  make

  it

  unless

his khichdi(早餐) was ready. After waiting for

  several

hours, Akbar along with his guards went to visit Birbal.

Birbal had a pot of khichdi hanging from the roof of the room several feet away from the fire. Akbar asked Birbal how he expected for a fire to cook khichdi from such a distance. Birbal very intelligently replied that he used the same way the poor man received warmth from a lamp post so far away from himself. Akbar once left speechless and had to pay the poor man in the end.

  4. The poor man was used to test______.

  根据第一段中的“A simple question occurred to

Birbal: how far a man can go to have money?”可得出答案,这样做的目的是测试人们为了挣钱会做什么。

next day.” “Akbar along with his guards went to visit Birbal”可推知,

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness,

but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis's Swamp(沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack's dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.

  “So,” Martin asked

  as

  they sat

  watching the

  hot

coals. “How did this place get its name?”

“Are you sure you want to hear it?

It's a scary story,” warned Jack.

  “Of course!” cried

  out

  Tom.

  “If there

  were

  anything

  to

be scared of,you wouldn't have chosen this place!”

  “OK,

but don't say I didn't warn you,” said Jack,

  and he began his tale.

“Way back in time,a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different—it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystalclear

  river. After three

  hard years,

  Dennis

had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.”

“‘You are clearing too much land,’ warned one old man. ‘The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it. ’”

“‘Silly fool,’ said Dennis to himself. ‘If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous! ’”

“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”

“What happened?” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.

“The land hit back-just as the old man warned,” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”

  “What a stupid story,”laughed Tom.

“Plants can't...” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted (晕倒).

The other two boys jumped up with fright,

  staring at Tom. Suddenly,

  they

  burst out laughing. Some green

  swamp ivy(常春藤) had

covered Tom's face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.
