Your four-legged friends may soon have their own channel. DogTV, cable TV’s first channel for dogs, is mostly about keeping lonely dogs calm.
There are about 78 million canines in the United States. DogTV is aimed at these that are left alone for long periods. Dogs are social animals and often grow anxious when left on their own. They may bark, chew shoes, and generally get into trouble. DogTV, which was launched last February, is designed to help ease their boredom and anxiety.
Creators of the cable service approached their task scientifically. The sounds, colors, and camera angles have all been adjusted for canine senses. For instance, colors are made more vivid so that canine eyes can see objects clearly. DogTV does not, as you might think, show Scooby-Doo and Clifford the Big Red Dog. Rather, there are three types of DogTV “shows” . The first aims to relax dogs. These segments show dogs resting to the sound of calming music. The second kind shows pleasant(for a dog)day-to-day settings, like riding in a car or walking down a street. The third type is meant to stimulate—like a scene of two dogs playing in a field.
“Dogs love watching other dogs being active on the screen, ” says Beke Lubeach, a DogTV spokesperson. She says that birds, monkeys, and zebras also make dogs take notice.
Not everyone is buying it.
“I think a lot of this is to make us feel better as opposed to making the pet happier, ” says Dr. Ann E. Hohenhaus of New York’s Animal Medical Center. She tells The New York Times,
“Your pet needs adequate exercise and an interesting environment. You cannot just turn on the TV and hope your dog is going to get better. ”
On the other hand, the Humane Society animal shelter in Escondido, California, tried out DogTV at its shelter. Sally Costello, the director, says workers observed that dogs exposed to the channel were calmer and barked less.
DogTV has been seen only in Southern California so far. But it is scheduled to go national soon. Owners of the commercial-free channel hope to charge about $ 5 a month for their service.
55. What is the purpose of DogTV?

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第61~65题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Goods for auction sales
B. Definition of bidding
C. Ways to sell more goods by auction
D. Auction sales in history
E. Brief introduction to auctions
F. Making a larger profit as an auctioneer
61.
Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or “bids” , for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer strikes a small hammer on a table at which he stands.
62.
The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increase” . The Romans usually sold the goods taken in war in this way. In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, goods were often sold “by the candle” , a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.
63.
Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, furniture pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art.
64.
An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together called a “lot” is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with LOT 1 and continue in the order of numbers, he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in.
65.
The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low. He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.

Recently a post saying that I don’t have a BMW car, only a collection of thousands of volumes has been spread on the net. The writer of the post is a Senior 3 girl student of Chongqing, who wishes more of her peers to read more good books. The post attracts many people’s attention and wins their praise soon after its appearance on the Internet.
Nowadays there are many people showing off their BMW or wealth that they own. In their eyes, wealth is the only thing they should make every effort to seek and show off because big wealth is the sign of high social position and privilege. Therefore they give up other ambitions that are more meaningful, especially spiritual or cultural ones.
It is not wrong of people to pursue wealth but meanwhile they should also try to learn to fulfill their knowledge. A person with a broad view as well as wealth is more attractive and admirable.
