第一节:阅读下列材料,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Gavin Joseph, a teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome, was beaten up by a group of people for just being different. Asperger’s Syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to socialize. But instead of putting them into prison for what they did to him, Gavin offered them a chance to become more tolerant and understanding.
On Thursday night, some kids were talking about how “it’s weird(怪异的)” that he is always by himself, attending events alone and watching people, and it was “creepy” that he wanted to be friends with people he didn’t know.
On Friday night, another kid that overheard that conversation decided to take matters into his own hands and become judge and jury, and this is the result of that. He didn’t ask questions, didn’t get to know Gavin, never met him, and didn’t give him a chance to leave. Gavin was called to meet someone, surrounded by people he didn’t know, choked, punched(用拳猛击, and left lying on the pavement so he would “learn his lesson”.
Gavin emerged from the attack with a concussion(脑震荡), a fractured nose, a bruised esophagus(食道) and some damage to his eyes, but thankfully, none of the injuries resulted in permanent damage.
But here’s the truly amazing part — Gavin refused to press charges against the people who did this to him. Instead of wanting to see them punished, he wants to see them educated. Gavin asked that his attackers do community service that is disability-related. According to his mother, Gavin also asked that they watch a 20-minute video statement he taped while their families were present so they could see the damage they did and hear the event from his perspective.
“If you are reading this, I hope you talk to your teens,” his mother wrote. “Tell them about disabilities you can’t see, teach them to be tolerant of people that are different, teach them that if they continuously see someone alone that maybe it is not their choice to be alone, remind them to ask questions first and get to know one another.”
41. Gavin is always alone because he
.
A. enjoys being alone
B. is always upsetting
C. suffers from a disease
D. doesn’t like his schoolmates
42. Which word can best replace the underlined word “creepy” in Paragraph 2?

43. Why was Gavin beaten by a group of people?

B. He is different from normal people.

D. He didn’t take school lessons seriously.
44. How did Gavin react to his injuries?
A. He fought back bravely.
B. He was too scared to react.
C. He decided to turn to court for help.
D. He wanted to see the attackers educated.
45. We can conclude that Gavin’s way of reacting was
.
A. interesting

After a fight and before forgiveness often comes an apology. But saying “I’m sorry” comes more easily for some people than doing that for others. A new study suggests that specific personality traits offer clues about whether a person is likely to offer a sincere apology.
Psychologist Andrew Howell and his colleagues at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton designed a questionnaire to measure a person’s willingness to beg someone’s pardon. They asked participants to indicate their level of agreement with a series of statements, such as “My continued anger often gets in the way of me apologizing” or “If I think no one will know what I have done, I am not likely to apologize.” The researchers then used the answers to determine every participant’s “proclivity(倾向) to apologize,” and they cross-referenced(相互参照) these scores with results from a variety of personality assessments.
From the beginning, Howell was confident that people with high marks on compassion and agreeability would be willing apologizers — and the study results confirmed his hypothesis(假设). But the experiment also turned up some surprising traits of the unrepentant(不思悔改的).
People with low self-esteem, for example, were less inclined to apologize, even though they probably feel bad after a conflict. Unlike people who experience guilt about a specific action and feel sorry for the person they have wronged, individuals who experience generalized shame may actually be feeling sorry for themselves.
In contrast, “people who are sure of themselves have the capacity to confess to wrongdoing and admit it,” Howell suggests. But just the right amount of self-esteem is the key. The study also found that narcissists — people who, in Howell’s words, “are very egocentric, with an overly grand view of themselves” — were reluctant to offer an apology.
The researchers were most surprised to find that a strong sense of justice was negatively correlated with a willingness to apologize, perhaps suggesting that contrition(忏悔) and an “eye for an eye” philosophy are incompatible(不相容的). Reconciliation(和解) may end a conflict, but it cannot always settle a score.
46. What method did Andrew Howell and his colleagues use in the study?
A. Observing people.
B. Interviewing people.
C. Doing lab experiments.
D. Collecting information.
47. What kind of people are more likely to apologize?
A. Intelligent people.
B. Confident people.
C. People valuing fairness.
D. People feeling sorry for themselves.
48. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggests
.
A. an end of conflict doesn’t mean wrongdoers have been punished
B. “an eye for an eye” philosophy cannot solve an argument
C. only by deep regret can one learn the lesson of his wrongdoing
D. unsatisfactory compromises cannot end a conflict peacefully
49. The study done by Andrew Howell and his colleagues reveals
.
A. what influences one to be a willing apologizer
B. when people might apologize willingly
C. what a willing apologizer is all about
D. how to become a willing apologizer

Many children in foster care(寄养) are being over medicated with antipsychotic drugs(安定药) they may not really need, or the drugs are being given incorrectly, according to a government review obtained by CBS News.
The report by an Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services looked at concerns surrounding the use of these powerful drugs in children on Medicaid. Many children on Medicaid are in the foster care system.
“Psychotropic drugs are being used in these children, and we don’t really know what the side effects are in these young children,” said CBS News reporter Anna Werner. “There’s not a lot of research because you can’t really test these drugs on children.”
More than half the time, the review found children on these powerful drugs were not being monitored adequately. A quarter of them were given the wrong amount of drugs. Many were given too many drugs or took them for too long.
“What the experts tell us is that not enough resources are needed to take care of these kids and give them the treatment that they need ? not drugs,” Werner said. “It takes a lot of time and a lot of people to do that, and that of course all costs money.” Therefore, states are choosing to just put kids on drugs instead.
Dr. Fernando Siles, a child psychiatrist(精神病医师) who treats children on Medicaid in Texas and has written thousands of prescriptions for such drugs, told Werner he doesn’t have a lot of other options. He said children from troubled homes often have anger and aggression issues and he often prescribes drugs to “contain” their behavior so they won’t get bounced(反弹) from foster home to foster home.
Werner's reporting also turned up the troubling case of a four-year-old boy who was put on four different psychiatric medications in the foster care system. When his grandmother gained custody(监护权) a year later, she said the boy seemed like a completely different child since he has taken all the drugs. But he still has frightening dreams at the age of 10.
Werner reports a number of states, including Texas, have taken steps to reduce the use of these drugs in foster children. But experts say more progress is needed, along with greater oversight of the system.
50. The side effects of psychotropic drugs in children are unknown because ____________.
A. there are some technical problems
B. only a few children take these drugs
C. few researchers are interested in the issue
D. it’s improper to test these drugs on children
51. What do we know from Paragraph 4 about foster care kids?
A. Many of them are being taken good care of.
B. Most of them have got the treatment they need.
C. Many of them are taking too many psychotropic drugs.
D. Most of them cannot afford expensive psychotropic drugs.
52. According to Werner, states help foster care kids with psychotropic drugs mainly because ____________.
A. these drugs are good for kids’ health
B. these drugs need to be tested on kids
C. these drugs are much cheaper than other drugs
D. these drugs cost less money than other treatments
53. The four-year-old boy’s case suggests that the side effects of psychotropic drugs are ____________.
A. lasting
B. temporary
C. modest
D. avoidable
54. What should be done in the future according to the last paragraph?
A. To develop better psychotropic drugs.
B. To encourage more people to be child psychiatrists.
C. To control the use of psychotropic drugs in foster care kids.
D. To provide foster care kids with enough psychotropic drugs.

My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold him in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.
We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is that I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian(卵巢的) cancer.
My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.
On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work. But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find the way out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.
My own process began on February 2. The operation took eight hours. Then I woke up with tubes in my breasts. It did feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery I can be back to a normal life. There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful.
I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a surgery operation was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me.
It is a comfort that they see nothing that makes them scared. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and I will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman.
For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.
I acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors working on alternatives to surgery. My own regimen(养生法) will be posted in due course on the Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be helpful to other women.
I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they can take measures.
Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.

第二节:下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句(第61~65题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Secure the Windows.
B. Keep Your Home Clean.
C. Create Personal Space for Them.
D. Keep Household Items Organized.
E. Protect Them from Poisonous Substances.
F. Use Stain-Resistant Fabrics All Over the House.
Pet care is the only responsibility of the owner. However, just providing pets with food, water, bedding, and toys is not enough. It is equally important to create a pet-friendly home to make sure they are safe. Here are some useful tips:
61 Designate (指定) an area inside the house exclusively (专门地) for your pets. Ideally, it should be near the entrance door so that they can reach there easily. Keep all such items which they need like food, water, pet bedding and some toys for their entertainment in this area. There they can spend their lone time and relax themselves.
62 You have to ensure that your home is free from dirt, rubbish, and pet hair, to keep your pet and other family members healthy. For this, regular cleaning of every corner of the house is a must. While selecting cleaning products for your home, make sure you pick up the one that does not cause harm to the pets.
63 As your pet is active, it may accidentally fall from the window. Therefore, you have to take care of the safety of your pet the way you take care of a small child or an elderly member of your family. If possible, keep the windows shut.
64 You cannot afford to leave household items around the house, as your pet can make a mess in no time. So ask your kids to keep the toys out of the reach of the pets. Smaller items like thread, needles, coins, and medicines should not be kept within their reach. If they swallow (吞咽) up such objects, it can be dangerous for them.
65 Pets often get poisoned by regular household cleaners, paints, insecticides(杀虫剂), etc. Keep all such harmful substances in closed cabinets only, so that the pets are not exposed to them even accidentally.
Before you bring in a new pet into your home, or you are moving into a new house with your family and pets, it is your responsibility to make it pet-friendly, according to the tips given above. Thus, you can ensure safety and comfort for this very special member of your household.

These days, breaking traffic rule and littering are not uncommon, caused serious harm to life and the
environment. Changing this situation require considerable effort on the part of everyone. As for me, it should start
on the way to the school.
I will keep traffic rules on mind all the way. If I ride a bicycle, I’ll always keep to the right and never cross a
