My favorite English teacher could draw humor out of the driest material. It wasn't forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson's dictionary, Addison's essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight o'clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own, some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldn't believe that I hadn't seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions (典故) and irony and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher.

My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week period, to be written every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other's journals. Mine was passed to Joe, that clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He thought it fit to make a joke of sb. and said, “This writing isn't fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.

So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can make students and classes grow fonder and make students excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating.

21.“_______” is the reason why the writer didn’t like the English teacher most.

A.He was not able to make students laugh.

  B. He had no sense of humor.

C.He didn't let his students do the grading.

  D.He hurt his students' feelings.

22.The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.

  A.tiring

  B.funny

  C.inspiring

  D.brilliant

23.With his favorite English teacher’s help, the writer found it most amazing that ________.

  A.his teacher was very learned.

  B.his teacher was very humorous.

C.few were able to find humor in works by Johnson and others.

D.the works by Johnson and Addison were very humorous.

  24.The passage mainly discusses ________.

  A.teaching

  B.humor

  C.literature

  D.knowledge

  B

Several dollars equal nothing for some people, but make a difference for others. Steve has just lost his wife to cancer and everything he had is gone due to the treatment. He now lives in the shelter for the homeless. So we know each other.

Just like other homeless people, he didn't think he needed anything. But once he mentioned to me that he needed eye-glasses. His voice hesitated a bit. He looked down, and it appeared like he thought such a request was just a dream. Did he hope for too much? It was as if his wish were known by me only.

I submitted an application for him to a programme that is supposed to provide a free eye examination and a pair of glasses. Three months later, I phoned to ask what was up with the appointment but they told me there was a cash flow problem until this late summer.

Steve showed disappointment, thanked me and started to walk away. I said, “Hold on. I will figure out a way to get you an eye examination and a pair of glasses.” His face lit up a tiny bit. He had seen some of the things I have done for other people in our shelter and to me he might have a line of hope.

I took a picture of him and posted his picture and his story in the Twitter. In about 4 days, eight people from around the world donated $25 each and one person donated $40 and I made up the rest to get him an eye examination and a pair of glasses.

Steve picked up his glasses on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011. Today Steve has returned to a previous job he had in a nearby car wash. Because he now has glasses and he will be able to see what he is doing while cleaning the vehicles. He is starting a second job at a pet center next week!

A smartphone(智能手机) is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing abilities than a common phone. The first smartphones enabled the users to send and receive e-mails. Later models added the function of portable media players, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation(导航) units to form one multi-use device. Many modern smartphones also include touch screens and web browsers(浏览器) that display web pages.

A recent report says we spend an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes each day looking at a smartphone. That doesn't mean making calls, but playing phone games and browsing the Web.

Nowadays we always find people checking e-mails in a restaurant, taking a picture of the food when it arrives, or checking a message during a conversation instead of traditional communication. It's no secret that our lives are being affected by our smartphone obsession.

However, this phenomenon has never been presented so vividly as in the short YouTube film I Forgot My Phone. Despite only being online for a few days, it's already been viewed more than 10.5 million times. Whether it will be screened in the cinema remains to be seen.

Ironically, YouTube's data shows that the site gets a billion viewers per day from mobile devices, so a lot of those people watched it on their phones.

The short film, written and acted by starring actress Charlene deGuzman, shows groups of people in various social situations, the majority of whom are absorbed in their phones instead of the world around them. To a certain extent, we all do it.

29.People prefer a smartphone to a common one, because the latter can only help us ________.

  A.check e-mails

  B.find destinations

  C.send messages and make calls

  D.watch videos

30.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.People spend an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes each day using smartphones.

B.The film hasn't been put on in the cinema.

C.The film is written by an actor named Charlene deGuzman.

D.The film has already been viewed more than 105 million times in the first few days.

31.When the writer mentions the number of people watching the film from mobile devices in the fifth paragraph, he mainly feels ________.

  A.encouraged

  B.satisfiedC.proud

  D.concerned

  D

Dogs already guide blind and disabled people and now they are to be trained to help people with dementia. The idea developed by some university students will now be put into practice by Scotland Medical Centre. The research is meaningful, for there are 670, 000 people in Britain who have dementia and by 2021 this is expected to rise to one million.

Dementia can make people confuse day and night or forget basic things such as washing or drinking enough water. The dogs would be trained to help to guide them through the day.

Joyce Gray from Scotland Medical Centre said, “People in the early stages of dementia are still able to live a relatively normal life, and dogs help them to maintain routine. For example, people with memory loss will tend to forget to take medicine, but if a dog presents them with a bag with pills in it, there's a greater chance of them taking it.”

Ms. Gray also said dogs were perfectly suited to remind their owners to eat. “Dogs have an ability to say ‘it's my feeding time’, so there would be a note in the cupboard next to the dog's food reminding the dog's owner to eat too.”

Dogs would also encourage their owners to take them out for walks. “It gives a reason for the owner to go out into the community,” Ms. Gray said. “We did a test with an elderly person walking down the high street on his own. Then we gave him a dog on a lead and he did the exact same walk. That time people would come up to him, chatting, smiling or making eye contact. We hope we'd see this with people with dementia too.”

There is one more advantage of using the pets as companions. Since conversations can be increasingly confusing for people with dementia, dogs can give them a sense of silent support and companionship. Ms. Gray said, “We have found that people may forget familiar faces but not pets. People light up when they see animals. There is a speechless bond between the dog and its owner.”

32.What's the best title for the passage?

  A.Guide dogs for the mind.

  B.Pets, faithful companions.

  C.Mental support for the disabled.

  D.Dementia, a curable disease.

33.What's the common symptom of dementia?

  A.Going hungry.

  B.Feeling lonely.

  C. Waking up at night.

  D.Forgetting things.

34.According to Ms. Gray, after feeding the pet, the owner may ________.

  A.do some washing.

  B.take his medicine.

C.have something to eat . D.go out to walk the dog.

35.For people with dementia, pets can ________.

  A.give them wordless help.

  B.contribute to their recovery.

C.help them to recognize people's faces.

D.ensure them to gain support from other people.

One of the nice things about being human being is that when you have a problem, you can ask for help, and you'll often get it. People actually want to help people.

You would not believe such many people called my office after the earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010 and asked how they could help. A lot of those people had never met a Haitian in their entirely lives, and they wanted to help.

I went to Somalia with a group a few years before. Our group also visited other countries in East Africa. We flew from one country to other. Upon arrival in the airport in one small country, the immigration official noticed that the visa for a member had expired(过期). She said that that member would have to re-board the flight, and return to which we had come, which was a huge problem, because of the next flight was four days late, and we were staying only for three. She insisted our colleague needed to re-board the airplane and lent a helping hand.
