W: Give it some thought! This could be your career in life!

M: I'll think about it! Thanks, Suzanne! Now let's eat!

  Text 2

M: How long have you been feeling ill?

W: It's been onandoff for a few months. I've tried taking aspirin to lessen the pain, but it doesn't help.

M: I'm not sure what the problem is. I need to do some tests before I can diagnose you.

  Text 3

M: I'm John Smith. What do you do?

  W: I'm a student. And you?

M: I'm a news reporter. I'm working here. Well, nice to meet you.

W: Nice to meet you, toe.

  Text 4

M: How do you like my classes, Helen?

W: They are very interesting. I really like Chinese history.

M: I'm glad you like it. Do you live on campus?

W: Yes, I do. I live in the International Students' Dormitory.

  Text 5

M: May I ask where you live?

W: Just two blocks away, in that tall building.

M: That's it. I live there, too. I live on the sixth floor.

W: My family moved in just two weeks ago. We live on the fourth floor.

  Text 6

W: Mickey! Good to see you! It's been too long!

M: Hi, Jane! You're right. It has been too long.

W: Sorry, I'm late for our lunch. Traffic was terrible. Did you find something on the menu that interests you?

M: Yeah...I think I'll have the Chicken Caesar Salad.

W: That sounds pretty good... hey, is everything okay? You seem kind of down.

M: I got laid off last Friday.

W: Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that.

  Text 7

M: What's it like living in England, Mary?

  Text 10

I shall never forget the day when the earthquake happened. The time was 5:15 in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to fetch my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together. I had finished work at about 4 o'clock and then gone to the post office. Then I'd stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruit. We like to have some fruit to eat after our swim.

I was driving along a high road on my way to the school. Over my road was another road for cars coming the other way. I was hungry so I put the bag of apples on the seat beside me and started to eat one.

Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. I slowed down. Then my car started to shake! I didn't know what was happening. Perhaps something had gone wrong with my car. I drove even slower. Then the road above started to fall down. I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the cars in front of me.

  Text 10

W: Here's a story that happened years ago when I first started my practice. It was quite late and I was getting ready to go to bed when I heard the doorbell. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the door and saw a man and a lion standing next to him. I couldn't believe my eyes! A huge lion right on my doorstep! Being new to this profession at the time, I was used to dealing with cats and dogs, not lions if you know what I mean! The poor lion seemed to be in great pain. And I can see the blood on his paw. The man explained that the lion had stepped on a nail during that night's performance. I gave the lion an examination and removed the nail and put the medicine on its paws and covered the wound with bandage. I told the owner that the lion shouldn't perform for a week or two. Then the poor animal disappeared in the darkness with its owner. That's really an experience.
