  Ⅰ.阅读理解

  A

(2016·江西省六校联考)Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money.

This is how I experimented with giving away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighbourhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving

away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in all unexpected form.

One Sunday morning, the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (无意中听到)

our conversation. “Wasn't it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don't know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

(2016·贵阳市适应性考试)Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款机), I said hello to an old couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke began pouring from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thankyou note for helping me. Soon afterwards, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling cars — was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked

and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment. When I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say “thank you”, and it meant a lot, he said.

“Thank you” — two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

5.Why did the writer get into the old couple's car?

A.Because his parents were in the car.

B.Because his car had broken down.

C.Because his friend told him to do so.

D.Because his car's oil had run out.

6.From the text, we know that the old couple were ________.

  A.talkativeB.brave

  C.kind

  D.lonely

7.What did the old couple think of helping the writer?

  A.They could get a reward.

  B.It made their holidays worthy.

  C.They did it by chance.

D.It was due to a thankyou letter.

8.What would be the best title for the passage?

  A.An Experience to Missouri

  B.An Old Couple

  C.A Meaningful Holiday

  D.A Meaningful Thankyou

(2016·成都诊断)Many years ago, an experiment in education was carried out in secret at a school in England. The school had two classes for children of the same age.At the end of the school year an examination was held, in order to select the children for the classes of next year. However, the results of the exam were never made known. In secret, based on their performance in the exam, the higher performing and lower performing children were divided equally between the two classes.Only the headmaster and the psychologists knew the truth.Teachers for the next year were carefully selected for equal ability and experience.Even the classrooms were chosen with similar facilities (设备).Everything was made as equal as possible, except for one thing: one was called “Class A”, the other, “Class B”.

In everyone's minds the children in Class A were the clever ones, and the kids in Class B were not so clever. Some of the parents of the Class A children were pleasantly surprised that their children had done so well and rewarded them with presents and praise, while the parents of some of the Class B kids complained that their children did not work hard enough and took away some of their rewards.Even the teachers taught the Class B kids in a different manner, not expecting so much from them. For a whole year the illusion existed. Then there was another end of year exam.

The results were not surprising. The children of Class A performed so much better than those of Class B.In fact, the results were just as if they had been the top half chosen from last year's exam. They had become “Class A” children. And those in the other group, though equal the year before, had now become “Class B” kids. That was what they were told for a whole year, that was how they were treated, and that was what they believed — so that was what they became.

9.According to the text, it is a fact that ________.

A.the Class A kids worked harder

B.the Class A kids had better facilities

C.kids in the two classes had equal ability

D.teachers of Class A were more experienced

10.The underlined word “illusion” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”.

  A.reward systemB.false impression

  C.teaching plan

  D.old tradition

11.Why didn't the Class B kids perform well in the second exam?

  A.Because they didn't work hard.

  B.Because they had lost selfconfidence.

  C.Because their teachers were irresponsible.

D.Because what they learned was too difficult.

12.The experiment proved the importance of ________.

  A.great ambitions

  B.natural talents

  C.strong determination

  D.outside influence

How to Be a Good Friend

A good friend, who wouldn't want one? Ever felt yours just not good enough but don't know where to improve? 1.________ I used to annoy a lot of my friends before, just for the sake of having fun and from that, I've learned how to be a good friend, and stay as a good friend.

  Listen.

No one likes being interrupted when they're talking. So, when someone talks, keep yourself quiet and listen to them, especially if they're feeling down, you need to be the shoulder for them to cry on. If you have any comment to make, be sure that you word it in a way where you don't sound too negative. 2.________ When you just don't share the same interest or you're not in the mood to listen to them, politely let them know and ask them to understand.

  Always smile.

3.________ The least you can do is, whenever you see your friends, smile and say hello. That way, if they had a bad day, you can make them feel better with your smile along with your ear, and maybe, you can share something funny to cheer them up.

  Don't ever lie.

Everyone would hate being lied to, especially if it's by your own friend, so don't lie! It might seem alright to lie occasionally, but once you lose your friend's trust, you may lose them forever. 4.________

  Keep secrets.

Make sure you can keep a secret. If not, tell your friends straight away you cannot help yourself when it comes to secrets. Otherwise, when you let them tell you about their secrets and you “accidentally” share it with someone else, you'll have your friends hating you for the rest of your life. 5.________ Secrets are not meant to be shared, so don't even try.

A.Everyone has their bad days, and it's unavoidable.

B.And that is something you surely do not want to happen.

C.Well, you've come to the right place.

D.A few people seem upset at you for being so direct.

E.Otherwise, they may just take it as you are trying to put them down.

F.This same thing happened to a good friend of mine.

G.They'll probably call you “big mouth”.

Anyhow, the experience of the contest helps me understand some of my shortcomings. One of them is that my limited knowledge weakens the power of my speech. So I have determined to study harder to broaden my knowledge and learn more about the world.

  Thank you!
