[2016·唐山摸底]All my life I had wanted a dog. I had two cats that I adored like children, but I still wanted the company of a dog. Then unfortunately I lost my cats. Soon came another shock that my husband left me forever because of lung cancer. I felt I had just lost everything that ever mattered to me.
I voiced these feelings to a friend, who took me to a pet store. The store was holding an adoption day with shelters. I looked at and held several puppies (小狗), wondering which to choose. Then I met Maggie. She looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen, then laid her head on my shoulder and slept. I immediately decided to save her!
Maggie adjusted well. I, however, was still adjusting. One night, thoughts of losing everything rushed through my head again. So depressed was I that I felt the only solution was to end my life. With a bottle of medicine in one hand and Maggie on my lap, I took the pills. Through my tear-filled eyes I looked down at Maggie to tell her I was sorry. The look on her face I will never be able to explain. It's as if her eyes said, “Don't leave me; I need you just as you needed me.” It was then that I ran to the bathroom to vomit_up the pills. The rest of the night I sat on the couch holding Maggie and thanking her for saving me.
Since that night I have had a love for her that I never knew possible. She never leaves my side when I am at home. She has taught me to smile and laugh. Together with Maggie, I feel I can get through anything.

[2016·皖南八校联考]The huge explosion in Tianjin is only a symptom of a much bigger problem plaguing (折磨) China today!
Laws are often not enforced (执行),
or are enforced half-heartedly.
The law clearly prohibits storage of dangerous goods and chemicals within a certain radius of residential areas, and there must be strict adherence (坚持) to rules on storage and transportation, etc. The fact that this accident
occurred
so close to residential areas, resulting in devastating damage to homes and serious injuries to residents, shows that the law was not strictly enforced.
Whoever approved the siting
of that logistic plant (物流工厂)
in that particular area has a lot to answer for. Often, officials come to take action only after lives are lost.
Another case in point is the unfortunate death of a young mother in the escalator accident in a shopping mall recently. Problems with elevators and escalators have been around for ages, and residents have made countless complaints, but to no avail. After the accident, city officials fan out all over the country checking on escalators for faults, and many escalators have been shut down for repairs.
This kind of action is a kneejerk reaction (习惯反应) to a serious disaster!
There are many disasters waiting to happen. And all are due to weak or non-existent enforcement. For instance, it's well known that many residents add an extra floor to the roof-top of their apartment blocks, endangering the safety of the block, while others dig into their ground floor units to create an extra basement living area, hacking away concrete slabs and cutting steel bars which are the basic foundation of the building, seriously jeodardizing (危害) its safety. Neighbors complain, city officials come round and leave, saying they can't do anything as the owner wouldn't open his door for an inspection! They would often leave a note on the owner's door telling him to stop construction, but true to form, the owner just ignores it. This is the kind of enforcement we see so often in China.
What is urgently needed in China is a complete overhaul (大修) of the enforcement practice, with every official held accountable for his failure to enforce the law strictly! Why wait till lives are lost before acting?
本文讲述的是天津爆炸事件使人们引发的思考:为什么不在事故发生前去排除安全隐患,而总是在事后进行补救呢?
5.What does the fact that the huge explosion in Tianjin resulted in serious injuries show?
A.It is very difficult to enforce laws.
B.People are not aware of the danger.
C.The law was not strictly enforced.
D.There is no law for ensuring us safe.
答案:C 细节理解题。根据第一段“Laws are often not enforced (执行),
or are enforced half-heartedly.”可知。
6.In what purpose do some residents dig into their ground floor units according to the passage?
A.To follow their neighbors.
B.To create an extra basement living area.
C.To protect themselves safe.
D.To add an extra floor to the roof-top of their apartment blocks.
答案:B 细节理解题。根据第三段“For instance, ... while others dig into their ground floor units to create an extra basement living area”可知。
7.How did the author develop the passage?
A.Topic-Argument-Explanation.
B.Opinion-Discussion-Description.
C.Main idea-Comparison-Supporting examples.
D.Introduction-Supporting examples-Conclusion.
答案:D 篇章结构题。分析全文结构,利用天津爆炸事件,引出话题,之后列举各种安全隐患存在的情况,并最后得出结论。
8.The author wrote the passage to ________.
A.blame some officials
B.make a complaint
C.call on acting before lives are lost
D.urge that more laws should be made

occurred
so close to residential areas, resulting in devastating damage to homes and serious injuries to residents, shows that the law was not strictly enforced.(同位语从句)
译文:这种事故发生在离居民区较近的区域,对家庭造成灾难性的破坏,对居民造成严重的伤害,这一事实表明法律执行不严格。

Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?
With the rapid development of information technology, e-books have become more and more popular among the young generation.___________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?
With_the_rapid_development_of_information_technology,_e-books_have_become_more_and_more_popular_among_the_young_generation. However, there has been an increasing controversy over the question of whether they will replace traditional books or not.
Many people believe that it won't take long for e-books to replace traditional books because they have quite a few advantages over traditional ones. First, e-books are more accessible to readers—One can just log onto the Internet and read online. Second, the cost of e-books is much lower, saving readers much more money. Last but not least, reading e-books has developed into part of our daily life, which is particularly appealing to young users, who are the body part of the users of electronic products.
As for me, it's not likely for e-books to replace traditional books for lots of reasons. For example, long time of reading e-books will do more harm to our eyes. Besides, many readers will find themselves more accessible to printed materials because computers and the Internet haven't yet been popularized to every corner of our life.
