Laptop(便携式)computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a 510millioncomputer program at Westlake, a 110yearold college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use email to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home,in a fastfood restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State highereducation officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

A new generation addiction is quickly spreading all over the world. Weboholism, a twentieth century disease, affects people from different ages. They surf the Net, use email and speak in chatrooms. They spend many hours on the computer, and it becomes a compulsive habit. They cannot stop and it affects their lives.

Decades ago, no one thought that using computers could become compulsive behaviour that could affect the social and physical life of computer users. This obsessional behaviour has affected teenagers and college students. They are likely to log on computers and spend long hours at different websites.

They become hooked on computers and gradually their social and school life is affected by this situation. They spend all free time surfing and don't concentrate on homework, so this addiction influences their grades and success at school. Because they can find everything on the websites, they hang out there. Moreover, this addiction to websites influences their social life.

They spend more time in front of computers than with their friends. The relation with their friends changes. The virtual life becomes more important than their real life. They have a new language that they speak in the chatrooms and it muses cultural changes in society.

Because of the change in their behaviour, they begin to isolate themselves from the society and live with their virtual friends. They share their emotions and feelings with friends who they have never met in their life. Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real live friends they have known all their life. It is a problem for the future. This addictive behavior is beginning to affect the entire world.

5.The underlined word “obsessional” in the second paragraph probably means ________.

7.Which of the following is NOT true of weboholism?

A.It contributes to the development of the web.

B.The chatroom language may change social culture.

C.The problem will be getting more and more serious later.

D.People addicted to the web often become inactive in real life.

  答案:A 本文主要讲述的是网瘾给人们生活带来的影响,并没有讲到网瘾对网络发展的贡献,所以A项错误。

8.The author's attitude towards weboholism is that of being ________.

  A.optimistic B.neutral

  C.critical D.acceptable

答案:C 从文章最后一段第二句“Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real live friends they have known all their life.”可知,作者对痴迷于网络是持批判态度的。
