China’s second female astronaut to enter space delivered a lecture to more than 60 million students across the country on Thursday, while aboard the Tiangong-1 space module 340 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, in the first attempt at this kind of lecture by a Chinese astronaut.

Wang Yaping, one of the three crew members in the Shenzhou-Ⅹclass spacecraft, delivered the lecture through a 40-minute live video broadcast, nine days after the successful spacecraft launch.

Assisted by the other two astronauts Nie Haisheng and Zhang Xiaoguang, Wang showed students how movement occurs in a zero-gravity environment through a series of physics experiments to help students understand basic physics concepts.

Observers say the creative lecture is not only good for science and patriotic education of the younger generation but also shows national confidence in China’s maturing space technologies.

Via the video feed system, the three astronauts interacted with some 300 curious students in Beijing on Thursday after the lecture, who raised questions about their daily life in the space module.

“I’m extremely excited to see the magical effects of the experiments. I feel like I’m close to space while watching the live broadcast, ”a primary school student in Beijing told the Global Times after the lecture.

The lecture became one of the most popular topics on Weibo Thursday, with some Web users saying this visually impressive method of education has made them interested in space science.

After the lecture, Wang replied to a letter of greeting from Barbara Morgan, a female US astronaut who participated in a space teaching program in 2007. “We would like to join the effort, as you have done, to bring science-loving youth around the world closer to their dreams of exploring the universe, ”Wang said in the reply, Xinhua reported.

  (2017·德州模拟)

It’s not uncommon in America for a person to belong to some kind of volunteer group. Donating one’s time and services is very much a part of the American way of life. Most charitable activities are organized by churches and groups around the nation and even encouraged by the government. The helping hand is extended to the poor, the homeless and the disabled. Some people work to teach youngsters how to read. Others open up soup kitchens to feed the homeless. Volunteers also take care of the disabled by making reading tapes for the blind and working in orphanages(孤儿院)to help children without parents.

High school students are often encouraged to become volunteers and many school club activities center around volunteer services. Students may work with disabled children during a summer program, or participate in a club activity which helps to bring meals to senior citizens who are shut-ins. With their sense of idealism(理想主义)students are often eager to donate their spare time. They see such activities as a way of becoming involved in the community and the adult world. Social action for them becomes as important as their academic studies.

In a like manner, throughout the year, fund raising drives are also conducted by schools and community groups to raise money for a worthy cause. They may respond to a recent earthquake in a foreign country, a flood somewhere within their own, or another natural disaster which has left people penniless and homeless. They may organize drives to collect food, clothing and medicines to serve an immediate need. Today even the Halloween custom of “trick or treat” has become an occasion to collect money for a charitable cause.

This call to help those less fortunate than themselves arises from the humble origins of the American nation. Those immigrants who were poor and downtrodden(受压迫的)became dependent on the kindness of their neighbors to make a new life for themselves.

American volunteers work throughout the world in less developed countries. They volunteer by serving as a champion of goodwill both at home and abroad, which no doubt enriches both his life and those whom he serves.

  59. Which of the following charitable activities is not mentioned in the passage?

  A. Some people open up soup kitchens to feed homeless people.

  B. Some students bring meals to old people who can’t go out easily.

  C. Some people collect money to help a foreign country with a recent earthquake.

  D. Some students donate books to children in mountainous areas.

  60. Why are American high school students eager to do voluntary work?

  A. Because they want to participate in some social activities.

  B. Because they want to go to better universities.

  C. Because they can get higher scores at school.

  D. Because they can realize their dream sooner.

  61. American charitable activities started because .

  A. Americans were always ready to share with others

  B. Americans were mostly kind

  C. poor immigrants needed help badly

  D. poor Americans couldn’t live on without help

  C

  Cultural Intelligence

When you’re working in an international environment, you need to make a real effort to understand the cultural backgrounds, beliefs and attitudes of the people around you. If you don’t, you’ll struggle to get things done.

  What Is Cultural Intelligence?

Christopher Earley and Soon Ang introduced the concept of cultural intelligence in their 2003 book of the same name. They define cultural intelligence as someone’s ability to adapt successfully to a new cultural setting.

Cultural intelligence is related to emotional intelligence, but it goes a step further. People with high emotional intelligence can notice the emotions, wants and needs of others.

  The Advantages of Cultural Intelligence

First, building cultural intelligence helps you work effectively with people who are different from you.

High cultural intelligence will also help you build rapport with a new team, adjust to a new department, or work well with a cross-functional team.

Last, high cultural intelligence is a predictor of strong job performance in a new culture. Research shows that professionals with high cultural intelligence are more successful in international assignments. They work more effectively with different groups, and they adjust more easily to living and working in the new culture.

Anyone can improve their cultural intelligence.

  1. Drive

Drive is your motivation to learn about and adapt to a different culture. People who aren’t interested in what shapes a particular culture are unlikely to adapt well to it.

  2. Knowledge

To broaden your knowledge of this, start by learning about a culture that you’re interested in, or that you’re working with. Books such as Do I Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands? will give you a good overview of cultural differences, and you can also deepen your understanding by observing how people from different cultures behave.

Whenever possible, watch people from these different cultures interact. Pay careful attention to their body language.

It’s also important to learn about how a culture’s history affects people’s values and actions. Again, begin with a culture that interests you or with which you are familiar, and explore how past events drive current behavior.

  3. Strategy

It involves taking what you have learned from being aware of cultural differences, and making robust(坚定的), culturally sensitive plans as a result.

This is actually quite simple—if you make a habit of thinking about cultural differences and their impacts, they will naturally feed into your planning.

  4. Action

The last part of cultural intelligence relates to how you behave, and, in particular, how well you adapt when things don’t go according to plan.

Cross-cultural interactions won’t always go smoothly, so it’s helpful to be able to think on your feet, and to stay in control of your emotions.

When observing a different culture, pay close attention to what people say and do. For example, explore their voice intonations, body language, and conversation style. This will give you a deeper understanding of them, and help you interact with them in a better way.

  62. The purpose of the article is to .

  A. tell us how to understand cultural intelligence

  B. inform us of who introduced the concept of cultural intelligence

  C. introduce a study about cultural intelligence to us

  D. tell us what cultural intelligence is and how to build it

  63. Which of the following words best describes the author’s attitude towards improving cultural intelligence?

  A. Positive.

  B. Indifferent.

  C. Doubtful.

  D. Critical.

  64. Which of the following sentences can be filled in the blank?

  A. The Reasons for Cultural Intelligence

  B. The Opinions about Developing Cultural Intelligence

  C. The Advantages of Cultural Intelligence

  D. The Effects of Cultural Intelligence

  65. There are four things contributing to cultural intelligence. “You try to get to know people in different neighborhoods and social groups” belongs to .

  A. Drive

  B. Knowledge

  C. Strategy

  D. Action

  D

A dog found shot in the head and face with a pellet(小弹丸)gun, stuffed in a garbage bag and left to die is recovering from his injuries at an animal clinic in Texas. The bag containing the 3-year-old male mixed breed was discovered tied to a fence in Conroe, Texas, earlier this month. When local residents opened the bag, the dog appeared, took a few steps and fell.

Augustyn rushed the dog to an emergency animal clinic, where he was treated for many pellets to the face, eyes, mouth, neck and shoulders. The dog was stabilized, but according to Dr Ron Hendrick, a vet at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Conroe, pellets remain in both eyes and it’s unclear whether the dog—nicknamed Buck—was left blind forever.

A Facebook page, Buck Needs Bucks for His Buckshot Injuries, was launched last week by Augustyn. It was created to help pay for the dog’s medical bills. The page has attracted nearly 7, 000“likes”and, according to its creator, already more than enough donations to pay for his treatment.

“The last 24 hours has been overwhelming for me, ”Augustyn wrote on the page. “I have gone from not knowing if I would have enough money to pay for Buck’s emergency bill to having an unbelievable amount of money to provide the best possible care for Buck’s recovery. I have thought long and hard about this today and how I should handle this. The conclusion is that I will open a separate bank account for Buck and all donations will be used for Buck’s recovery and necessities. ”With the help of Facebook, Buck’s story quickly sparked international interest. “Buck is now walking, ” Augustyn says.

Police in Montgomery County say they are investigating the incident, and Augustyn says she has been in contact with law enforcement officials about donating a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who tortured(折磨)the dog.

Sadly, cases like Buck’s are not uncommon, particularly in Texas.

  66. When the dog was found, he was .

  A. dead, shot by his owner

  B. tied near an animal clinic

  C. in a terrible physical state

  D. recovering from his injuries

  67. After being treated at the emergency animal clinic, the dog .

  A. is still not in a stable condition

  B. remains blind because of the shots

  C. has no pellets remaining in his body

  D. has completely recovered from his injuries

  68. What was Augustyn’s purpose in launching the Facebook page?

  A. To ask for donations for the dog.

  B. To ask a vet to help treat the dog.

  C. To call for people to love animals.

  D. To ask people to find the dog’s owner.

  69. We can infer from Paragraph 4 that .

  A. Augustyn is worried about the emergency bill

  B. Augustyn will try to help more injured dogs

  C. many people care about the injured dog’s recovery

  D. Augustyn doesn’t know how to deal with the donations

  70. What will the passage most probably talk about next?

  A. How to stop people from torturing dogs.

  B. Some people who like torturing animals.

  C. Why the dog’s owner abandoned him.

  D. Some other examples of badly tortured dogs.

  第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题; 每小题1分, 满分10分)

  请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

  注意: 每个空格只填一个单词。

Scientists, doctors and mental health professionals have been studying the connection between colors and moods for years. Many now believe that colors can not only bring about emotional reactions, but can also correct moods. Colors behave in three basic ways: active, passive and neutral(中立的).

Active colors are warm colors, including yellow, orange and red. These colors bring confidence. Warm colors can also bring cheerful attitudes. Yellows and golden colors work well in offices, kitchens and study areas. Reds heat up a room. Passive colors or cool colors make people calm, quiet and satisfied. Bedrooms, private areas and bathrooms are great places for blues and greens. Beige, gray and white are thought of as neutral colors. They help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down colors that might otherwise be overpowering on their own.

You can easily change the look or feel of a room by making good use of different colors. Mixing and matching colors is an excellent way to balance color and emotion, and provide a welcoming feel for guests.

To create a feeling of warmth and comfort in a room, use bright, warm colors like yellow, orange and red. These colors are good choices for rooms that appear cool due to limited sunlight. Yellow adds cheerfulness to dull rooms. You can add yellows to rooms which are not closely related to happy thoughts, such as kitchens and laundry room. In rooms where there’s plenty of sunshine, cool colors can provide a calming environment. Sage greens and sky blues are perfect for bedrooms, playrooms and activity areas. Neutral colors, such as pale gray, white and beige, send a peaceful message to your brain. It’s not a coincidence that most doctor’s offices, coffee shops and mental health centers are decorated in neutrals.

To make your wall color choices better, pick out furniture that will provide a visual contrast. Cool colors make a room seem larger than it is and warm colors make rooms feel smaller.

  Being a Popular Student

We all hope to be popular with our classmates and teachers.

To enjoy popularity, we are supposed to regard the class as our big family and try our best to take an active part in all our class activities. We should be responsible for the work and keep teamwork spirit in mind.

To be popular students, we must show our respect, concern and sympathy for others. As a result, we never hesitate to lend a hand to those in need.

To be popular students, we ought to be strict with ourselves in everything we do at school and make an effort to achieve all-round development, being good not only at our lessons but also at sports, music, painting, social service and so on. In time of success we remain modest, while in time of difficulty we keep strong-minded.

All in all, being a popular student among the classmates and teachers comes naturally to those who keep improving their personal qualities.
