AWe don’t have beds in the space shuttle, but we do have sleeping bags. During the day, when we are working, we leave the bags tied to the wall, out of the way. At bedtime, we untie them and take them wherever we’ve chosen to sleep.

On most space shuttle flights everyone sleeps at the same time. No one has to stay awake to watch over the space plane; the shuttle’s computers and the engineers at the Control Office do that. If anything goes wrong, the computers ring a warning bell and the engineers call us on the radio.

On the space shuttle, sleep-time doesn’t mean nighttime. During each ninety-minute flight around the Earth, the sun “rises” and shines through our windows for about fifty minutes; then it “sets” as our flight takes us around the dark side of the Earth. To keep the sun out of our eyes, we wear black sleep masks.

It is surprisingly easy to get comfortable and fall asleep in space, and we sleep differently. Some sleep upside down, some sideways, some right side up. When it’s time to sleep, I take my bag, my sleep mask, and my tape player with earphones and float up to the flight platform. Then I get into the bag, and float in a sitting position just above a seat, right next to a window. Before I pull the mask down over my eyes, I relax for a while, listening to music and watching the Earth go by under me.

When I’m in space I don’t need as much sleep as I do on the Earth. Maybe that’s because when I am weightless, I don’t feel as tired. Or maybe it’s because I’m excited to be in space and don’t want to waste time sleeping. (306W)

The towers, called the Bosco Verticale, are under construction in Milan. Towering over the city skyline, these are the world’s first forest in the sky apartments.

With trees equal to 10, 000 square meters of forest covering 27 floors, the twin towers will be home to an astonishing 730 trees, 5, 000 bushes and 11, 000 ground plants.

Michele Brunello, director of Boeri Studios, explained, “The idea of a vertical forest came when we were involved in a local tree planting project. We imagined the building that allowed the landscape(景观)to enter it. ”

Brunello’ s concept is designed to save on land, which is a precious resource in the centre of a major city. “We can provide the quality of life of expensive housing without consuming the resources that conventional housing would demand. ”he said.

Bosco Verticale has been designed as a home to a variety of plants, which planners hope will act as a filter(过滤器)to pollution from traffic, shade people from the sun and will change its appearance each season.

“People live with the trees but they don’t own them—they are communal, ”said Brunello. “All the plants have been picked by the designers to be suitable to the height and correct side of the building. So the people aren’t just choosing an apartment based on the size and view, but also they need to consider which trees and plants they will be living with. ”

Safety is also a major factor. If a tree was blown down in the wind from a great height, this could be a huge problem. So we tested various trees to make sure we had the right ones.

When the sky forest is completed, the structure will house the same amount of people as 50, 000 square meters of conventional urban area. What’s more, it will be home to insects, birds and animals that usually live in the parks of Milan. (366W)

  5. By saying “allowed the landscape to enter it” Brunello means that .

  A. trees will be planted inside the building

  B. the towers are part of the tree planting project

  C. the landscape of trees and plants is part of the towers

  D. the landscape of trees can be moved into the building freely

  6. What does the underlined word “communal” in Para. 6 probably mean?

  A. Expensive.

  B. Public.

  C. Dangerous.

  D. Unaffordable.

  7. Which of the following may not be considered when buying an apartment in Bosco Verticale ?

  A. The size of the apartment.

  B. The view of the apartment.

  C. The different trees on the towers.

  D. The amount of birds living in the trees.

  8. Which isn’t the benefit that the Bosco Verticale can bring to Milan?

  A. Cleaning the polluted air by traffic.

  B. Lowering the conventional houses’ price.

  C. Changing its appearance each season.

  D. Shading people from the sun.

  9. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

  A. Brunello creates a special park

  B. Bosco Verticale consumes less land

  C. Italy will plant a variety of trees

  D. Milan constructs towers of trees

Five steps to take if your child is being bullied.

1 The worst thing you can do is ignoring it. Too often parents feel children and teens need to “work things out” on their own. If the problem is ignored, your child’s self-esteem will become unhealthy, he will be hurt mentally or physically, and he could become a bully himself.

Here are five steps you can take if your child is having problems with a bully:

2 This is an important first step and will help your child trust that you are able to help him with his problem. Accept what he has to say at face value by using your active listening skills.

Let your child know that he is not alone. 3 Reassure your child that he is not the problem. Nothing he did caused the bully to go after him.

If your child is being threatened in a physical or an illegal way at school, report the problem. Your child may not want you to do this, or the school may not take it seriously, but violence cannot be tolerated. 4 You will need to model assertive(果断的)behavior by alerting those in charge where the bullying is taking place.

Teach your child assertive behavior and how to ignore routine teasing. Let them know it is okay to say “No. ”sometimes even friends bully, so letting your children know they can be true to their own feelings and say “No” can go a long way.

5 Giving up possessions or giving in to a bully in any way encourages the bully to continue. Identify ways for your child to respond to a bully—showing assertive but not aggressive behavior—and role-play them.

  A. Believe what your child tells you.

  B. Encourage your child not to give in to a bully.

  C. Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it.

  D. Bullying is a terrible situation for a child to have to cope with.

  E. If you choose not to do anything, that is what you’re teaching your child.

  F. Most children have to deal with some types of bullying behavior at one time or another.

  G. If your child comes to you because a bully is bothering him, you need to pay close attention to the problem.

  Ⅰ.1.【解析】选A。

”和“It’s a pleasure. ”。

  1. —Let me introduce myself. I’m Albert.

—What a pleasure. (正确答语可为: Pleased to meet you. )

  2. —I’m sorry I broke your mirror.

—Oh, really? It’s OK with me. (正确答语可为: It doesn’t matter. )

D。be accustomed to(not)doing sth. to是介词, 不是动词不定式符号, 所以不能用not to do sth. 。

  Please pay attention in public.

  A. not to smoke B. not to smoking

  C. to not smoke

  D. to not smoking

pay attention to中的to是介词, 所以后面接动词-ing形式。pay attention to(not)doing sth.

10.【解析】选A。 accuse sb. of sth. 因为某事指责/指控某人; take hold of抓住; approve of支持; remind sb. of sth.

11.【解析】选A。 set out出发, 开始做某事, 陈述; set about开始做某事; set up建立; set off出发, 引爆, 引起。set out to do sth. = set about doing sth.

look up表示“查阅”, 用于look up a word/a sentence/an idiom in a book/dictionary; consult=refer to表示“查阅”, 后面接工具书; consult with sb.

C。burst into laughter= burst out laughing突然笑起来; in advance of在……

The new method, Mr. Wang has been devoted to是定语从句修饰The new method, 由此可知, 填空处作谓语, 因为空后面是形容词, 所以此处的prove是连系动词, 表示“证明是”, 不能用于被动语态, 所以选D。

6.【解析】选A。与下文I would not miss this opportunity相照应, 此句意为“我会有多少机会在他离开上大学前与他一起做些有趣的事呢? ”

故选decision, make a decision作出决定。
