The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth tasking. __36__ Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. __37__ As the quality of Risk-taking was passed from on ration to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. __38__
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. __39__ To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
__40__ For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
B. It all depends on your character.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

Third-Culture Kids
Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid!
The term “third-culture kid” (or TCK) was first used in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own.
36
About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.
37
In fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max, for example, experienced this feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid.
38
While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.
For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years, Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born.
39
She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home.
While a third-culture kid must let go of his/her identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized(理想化的) image children have of “home”.
40
As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.
A. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
B. Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.
C. In general, they often reach excellent academic results.
D. However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.
E. Their experience abroad helps them to understand cultural differences better.
F. Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.
G. Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.

In your life, sometimes you may be asked to speak in front of a large group of people. Although it sounds a little scary, even those with stage fright can speak successfully to the group with adequate preparation.
1. Practice your speech before the big day.
16
If possible, practice the speech in front of a friend or family member to get used to saying it to real people. If you feel you must have note cards, limit the amount to about three cards. This will force you to keep your speech concise and help you keep your eyes focused on your audience.
2. Remember why you've been invited to speak. If you're battling fear over speaking to a large group of people, keep your mind on the fact that you were selected for this important role. The speech organizers must have seen something valuable in you or your expertise.
17
3. Remember that fear of public speaking is very common.
18
Most of the people in the audience would be feeling the same fear and stress that you do in your position. Knowing this may make you feel better.
4.
19
What you say should be tailored to why you're there and who you're speaking to in order to avoid sounding general. If speaking to a charity group, mention the good work certain specific individuals have done for the cause. If speaking at a business conference, briefly state why you want to help these people.
5. Keep eye contact with the crowd.
20
Pick one person in each section and look at him while you're speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another section. When you focus only on one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn't as frightening.
A. A good memory is really helpful.
B. Show appreciation to your audience.
C. Mention your audience in your speech.
D. The more you have it memorized, the better.
E. In fact, it's normal to feel nervous or stressed out before a big speech.
F. Separate the crowd into three sections mentally as you get up to speak.
G. The knowledge of other people's respect for you should reduce some of the fear.

Some experts feel that cars are certain to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all cars will be deserted and made useless.
36
They hold that the car will remain a leading means of city travel in the foreseeable future.
The car will undoubtedly change greatly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more practical, and should not be powered by the gas engine.

Unless changes take place in the power system, the car in the future will still be the main problem in city traffic jams.
38
When the car enters the highway system, a small arm will drop from the car and connect with a rail, which is similar to hose(软管) powering subway trains electrically. Once joined to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system and control of the car will pass to a central computer.
39
The driver will use the telephone to dial instructions about his position and the place he heads for into the system. The computer will find the best way and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway.
____40
It is believed that an automated highway will be able to deal with 10,000 cars per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 cars that can be carried by a present-day highway.

How to Say No to Your Boss
Saying “no” to a request can be a difficult thing, especially when the person making the request is your boss.
16
The following steps are helpful.
1. Give yourself some time to think about the request before saying “no”.
If the request arrives via email, don’t reply right away.
17
If your boss asks you in person or on the telephone, request some time to give it thought and tell her you will get back to her by a specific time. Consider the request carefully to determine whether you have to say “no”.

Anticipate questions she might ask in response to your answer, and decide how you want to answer them. Rehearse your conversation with your boss out loud to help build your confidence before the real conversation.

Have the conversation in private if your work situation allows you to get a moment alone with your boss. Keep in mind your boss’s workday pressures and work style. If she is a morning person and gets grumpy(脾气暴躁的)in the afternoon, be sure to speak with her before lunch.
4.
18
If your boss is asking you to take on more responsibility, that shows that she has faith in your ability to do the job. Acknowledge that it means a lot to you before telling her that you feel you cannot do it.
5. Tell your boss why you have to say “no” to the request.
19
Your boss will be grateful that you answered honestly, rather than trying to take on a project you cannot handle.

Eyes can speak
Much meaning can be conveyed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
16
In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he sensed that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.
17
Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive.
18
If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.
However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking.
19
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.
20
Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationship and situation.
A. On the contrary, it will give him away.
B. Do you have such a kind of experience?
C. That’s what normal eye contact is all about.
D. Actually, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.
E. After all, everybody likes to be stared at for quite a long time.
F. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.
G. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.

MuzakThe next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? ____36 It’s similar to the music you listen to, but it’s not exactly the same. That’s because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don’t even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway. Quiet background music used to be called “elevator (电梯) music” because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has an new name “Muzak”.
