  Black-footed ferrets cannot live without prairie dogs. These ferrets live, hunt, and raise their young only in large prairie dog towns?vast networks of tunnels on prairies in parts of the western United States.

  For a hundred years, farmers have shot and poisoned prairie dogs, believing that they compete with their cows and sheep for grass. Farmers are also concerned that prairie dog burrows(洞)cause cattle and horses to trap and break their legs. Most large prairie dog towns were wiped out. Ferrets disappeared, too. Scientists say that to support a ferret population a town must cover hundreds of acres.

  By the 1990s disease swept through the colony(领地), killing ferrets and prairie dogs alike. Black-footed ferrets were assumed to be dying out. But in 2001 a black-footed ferret was discovered on a remote farm in Wyoming. Excited by the find, scientists from university, state and federal wildlife organizations searched the surrounding area. During the next four years they found more than a hundred ferrets!

  Pampered and well fed in their new home, the surviving ferrets reproduced. Within seven years there were 400 black-footed ferrets in a controlled environment. It was time to try reintroducing them to the wild.

  There were many difficulties to overcome when trying to return human-raised animals to the wild. Used to being fed and protected, the animals must quickly learn to find their own food and avoid danger. Another problem was that humans and ferrets share the same land. Local farmers were concerned about the restrictions (限制) that might be placed on grassland. Protecting reintroduced black-footed ferrets from disturbances might restrict the farmers’ fencing and grass areas. Wildlife agency officials worked with the farmers to find acceptable agreement.

  In 2006 the first black-footed ferrets were freed into prairie dog towns in Wyoming. The next summer there were four new wild-born ferret litters on the prairie. But most of the reintroduced ferrets died. Looking for ways to help more ferrets survive after release, scientists started a preconditioning program. Inside dirt pens young ferrets learned to run through prairie dog tunnels in a real burrow and fight and kill live prey.   It is difficult in the modern world to do anything other than a basic job without

  being able to read. Reading as a skill is the key to an educated workforce, which in turn is the bedrock of economic advancement, particularly in the present technological age. Studies have shown that by increasing the literacy skill of primary school children in the UK, the benefit to economy generally is in billions of pounds. The skill of reading is now no mere just an intellectual (知识的) or leisure activity, but rather a completely developed economic force.

  Part of the problem with reading is that it is a skill which is not appreciated in most developed societies. This is an attitude that has forced a large number of the population in most Western nations to illiteracy (文盲). The term indicates the contempt (轻蔑) in which reading and learning are held in certain circles or subcultures. It is a criticism, like all such attacks, driven by the insecurity of those who are not literate or are semiliterate. Criticism is also a means, like all bullying, of keeping peers in place so that they do not step out of line. Peer pressure among young people is so powerful that it often kills any attempts to change attitudes towards habits like reading.

  I’m Li Hua from Hong Xing Middle School. After the Beijing Olympic Games, the volunteers of my school form a Voluntary Union. There are great changes in voluntary members and their services in the Union compared with the Olympic Games. During the Games, there were only 10 volunteers in my school, three of them offered language service to the foreigners and seven of them helped guide the audience to their seats in gyms. But now, there are 33 members in the Union and their services cover four aspects, such as caring for the disabled and the old, teaching children English in the community, helping some schoolmates with their lessons and repairing the computers for teachers and neighbors.

  I’m very glad to see that there are more and more students who choose to devote their time and efforts to the voluntary work at school and in the community.   M: No, and I’ve tried to get someone else to stop.

  W: I’ve just sent an ambulance to your location. They should be there any second.

  M: Hey, is there anything I can do while we wait for the ambulance?

  W: Yes, uh, keep her calm and warm.

  M: Okay. Please hurry.

  W: So, what do you want to watch on TV tonight?

  M: Well, what’s on?

  W: Well, hmm. There is a reality show on at 7:00 on channel 5.

  M: Nah, you know I don’t like reality shows. I mean, they usually show people doing crazy things like, you know, eating live fish or swimming in a pool full of snakes. I don’t get into that.

  W: Okay. Well, how about watching a documentary program on the life of panda bears in the wild at 8:30?

  M: Oh, I’ve watched it millions of times.

  W: Okay, let’s see here. Oh, how about this? On channel 2 at 9:00, there’s a home improvement show about fixing anything around the house. We do have a few things that you could repair in the bathroom….

  M: Fixing things? Uh, dear, I’m beat. I think I’m going to bed. I have to get up early tomorrow.

  W: Okay. Too bad, though. There’s a basketball game on right now, but… but I guess you can catch the score in tomorrow’s newspaper.

  M: Oh, okay. I’ll stay up and keep you company while I… I mean, you… I mean, WE watch the game.

  W: I thought you’d change your mind. I’ll get the popcorn.

  Something doing some research before you go to the restaurants can make dining a more pleasurable and predictable experience, especially when you are traveling abroad.

  While I was on a vacation last week, I decided to visit some restaurants to try some of the local food; however, I didn’t have a clue about the types of restaurants available, so I checked an online restaurant guide to give me some ideas and tips. Mainly, I was interested in seafood restaurants, so I searched for restaurants within a reasonable walking distance from my hotel, and I found three of them. After that, I reviewed the online menus of the three places to check the dishes they prepared and the average cost of a meal. But, you know, price is not my first consideration; I enjoy a restaurant that has a wide selection from which to choose. And, a restaurant’s décor such as, background music, decorations and wall hangings, seats and tables, etc. can always add to the dining experience. Finally, a Mexican restaurant attracted me and I consulted this restaurant reviews to find out what other people thought about the quality of the food, their service and their experiences.

  That night I really enjoy the food, the restaurant and my dinning experience.
