Yoga is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of harmony in body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. After a long time of yoga practice, you no longer just practice it --- It becomes part of your physical life. Your body grows stronger, softer, and more flexible as you move from one pose to another.

I spent a week in Mexico practicing yoga, and it was the first vacation on which I lost weight. “Rather than building muscle, yoga builds muscle strength,” say Shakta Kaur Khalsa, author of K. I. S. S. Guide to Yoga. “Because yoga helps maintain a balanced metabolism (新陈代谢),and it also helps to control weight. Additionally, yoga stretches (伸展) muscles lengthwise, causing fat disappear, thus losing weight.”

I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my computer, I stretch my stiff shoulders and arms. When I need an increase in energy, I do energizing poses. When I am feeling tired at the end of the day, I do restorative (that brings back health) poses.

Yoga becomes part of your mental life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. This attention to breath is calming; it can help you get rid of stress and anxiety. I use yogic breathing on the tennis court, in the dentist’s chair, and when I’m stuck in traffic.

You should always leave a yoga practice feeling energized, but not tired. If you feel tired after yoga, it means you spent the time “fighting” yourself, trying to force yourself into poses. In yoga, you give in to the poses by letting go of the tension.

  64. What will be talked about if this passage continues?

  A. Yoga becoming part of your spiritual life.

  B. Yoga becoming popular all over the world.

  C. The disadvantages of yoga practice.

  D. Encouraging people to pick up yoga.

  65. According to the second paragraph, yoga can make people _________.

  A. taller

  B. lighter

  C. prettier

  D. bigger

  66. Why does a person feel tired after yoga?

  A. Because yoga doesn’t benefit all the people.

  B. Because he or she doesn’t do yoga poses naturally.

  C. Because when practicing yoga, people will need a lot of energy.

  D. Because he or she gives in to the poses by letting go of the tension.

  67. What would be the best title for this passage?

  A. What’s yoga?

  B. How I do yoga poses

  C. The benefit of yoga

  D. The varieties of yoga

  Down the Mine

The actual process by which coal is dug out is well worth watching, if you get the chance and are willing to take the trouble.

When you go down a coalmine, it is important to try and get to the coalface when the miners are at work. This is not easy, because when the mine is working, visitors are a trouble and is not encouraged, but if you go at any other time, it is possible to come back with a totally wrong impression. On a Sunday, for instance, a mine seems almost peaceful. The time to go there is when the machines are roaring and the air is black with coal dust, and when you can actually see what the miners have to do. At those times the place is like hell (地狱). Most of the things one imagines in hell are there—heat, noise, confusion, darkness, dirty air, and above all, unbearably crowded space, everything except the fire, for there is no fire down there except the dim light of the lamps and torches.

When you have finally got there, you can see opposite you a shiny black wall three or four feet high—the coal face. Overhead is the smooth ceiling made by the rock from which the coal has been cut; underneath is the rock again. The first impression of all is the frightful, deafening noise from the conveyor belt which carries the coal away. You cannot see very far, because the fog of coal dust throws back the light of your lamp, but you can see on either side of you the line of kneeling men, busy feeding the coal on to the conveyor belt. Down this belt a shining river of coal races constantly. In a big mine the belt is carrying away several tons of coal to the outer air every minute. It bears it off to some place in the main roads where it is shot into tubs holding half a ton, and hence dragged to the cages and sent to the outer air.

It is impossible to watch the miners at work without feeling kind of envy for their toughness. It is a dreadful job that they do, an almost superhuman job. For they are not only carrying large quantities of coal, they are also doing it in a position that doubles the work. They have got to remain kneeling all the while—they could hardly rise from their knees without hitting the ceiling—and you can easily see by trying it what a tremendous effort this means. They have got to remain kneeling all the while. Shoveling (铲) is comparatively easy when you are standing up, but kneeling down, the whole of the stress is thrown upon your arms and belly muscles.

In mines you’ll feel it hard to breathe, what’s more, the unending noise of the conveyor belt, is rather like the noise of a machine gun. But the miners look and work as though they were made of iron.

  68. It may be difficult to get the chance of watching coal being dug out because __________.

  A. the miners are too busy to talk to the visitors

  B. it is so dark, confused and crowded down in a mine

  C. visitors tend to get in the way and are therefore discouraged

  D. it is possible to come away with a complete wrong impression

  69. The main job of the miners seems to be _______.

  A. cutting through the rock to get at the coal

  B. getting to and from the coal-face

  C. feeding the conveyor belt with coal

  D. shoveling the coal over their left shoulders

  70. The miners face many difficulties. The passage suggests that the worst is ______.

  A. the deafening noise of the conveyor belt

  B. the position in which they have to work

  C. the quantity of coal they have to move

  D. the difficulty of seeing what they are doing

  71. The writer’s chief impression of a coal-mine is that it is ______.

  A. like hell

  B. an evil place

  C. worth watching

  D. hot, dirty and noisy

When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?

Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term, they will also experience fear.

Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.

The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation(积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the paycheck is not the single most motivating factor in the work life of most people.

The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence--knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

  72. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when___.

  A. he is forced to do things

  B. he cannot work at his best

  C. he feels his brain shut down

D he considers his work too heavy

  73. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. People tend to associate leadership with fear.

  B. Working conditions affect people’s physical health.

  C. Good relationship is the key to business success.

  D. Smart people are more functional in the work place.

  74. To positively influence employees, a leader should first of all ________.

  A. provide better suggestions

  B. develop his own personality

  C. give his employees a pay-rise

  D. hide his own emotion of fear

  75. Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to_______.

  A. provide a variety of project for employees

  B. help raise employee’s living standards

  C. give employees specific instructions

  D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions

  第一节:情景作文(20分)

  One possible version

Take a look at the road conditions of today. Quite a few pedestrians and cyclists behave as if there were no traffic rules at all .They cross roads anywhere as they like, even though there are zebra-crossings just a few yards away. Some even put themselves at risk taking short cuts by climbing dividers in the middle of roads. Many drivers act like F1 racers on the highways. They drive at considerable speeds without care. They usually speed through zebra-crossings, even when pedestrians are there .When there is a red light at an intersection ,pedestrians or cyclists never tend to pause or stop .They all forget where they are .Sometimes there are some crazy people driving on the roads without driving licenses ,or worse ,drink and drive ,which can make the road into a bloody battle field.

Why do such things happen? In my opinion, it is just due to their lack of moral duty that people ignore various traffic rules ,road safety ,or even the lives of others. This leads to their bad and reckless behavior, which makes the traffic conditions go from bad to worse. It is believed that something should be done to improve the whole situation. Then road safety won’t be a problem and traffic conditions won’t be a bother to us anymore.

  第二节 开放作文(15分)

  One possible version:

Modern society has planted on the surface of the earth a forest of skyscrapers in which elevators have become a must. This is natural because man cannot be so strong as to go up and down high buildings all the time. The uncommon thing in this picture is that the man is standing on an elevator three steps high. I guess the artist is trying to criticize those who waste time and money doing something unimportant. Or maybe he is criticizing some of the rich who never think their life is comfortable enough and who don’t care much about the poor.
