2016年湖北武汉市高考英语阅读理解二轮基础训练(50)(含答案)
【2016高考训练】阅读理解—词义猜测题、观点态度题。
Grammarphobia is the fear of grammar. This fear attacks almost everybody at one time or another, and it's most likely to strike during English or language arts. Even people who love reading and writing have been known to get feverish and insecure when they are aware of the possibility of turning in homework with grammar or spelling mistakes. Though writing may be enjoyable, being corrected is definitely not!
Grammarphobes, it's time to put your fears behind you. Grammar isn't that dreadful(可怕的). Here's why.
Let's assume you like hearing and telling stories and that you enjoy joking with friends. You probably also like e-mailing and instant-messaging. Well , what do you think makes all these possible? Grammar!
Grammar is simply the art of putting words together to make sentences. Whenever you use words to express yourself, you're using grammar. You do this all the time without even thinking.
So why think about it? Because good grammar helps you convey the ideas you intend. If your words aren't right, or if they are not in the right order, the person you are talking to might get the wrong idea. This can have embarrassing results.
Grammar helps us understand each other. It's like a manual for assembling the words in your head. You have to put your words together the right way if you want them to make sense. They can't do what you want is they aren't put together correctly.
What if everybody you know had a different manual? How would you agree on what others' words mean? People with different grammar manuals might be speaking different languages.
Communicating is similar to playing cards. To make sense, we have to play the same game, by the same rules. What are the rules for playing the game of English? You already know most of them without having to open a book.
Grammarphobes refer to people who
.
Mind grammar too much in writing
Are afraid of making grammar mistakes
Consider grammar to be boring
Are worried about grammar homework
The underlined word “assembling” in Paragraph 6 may mean
.
Looking for
B. bringing together
C. remembering
D. directing
What does playing cards have in common with communicating?
Both can be learned easily
Both can be very interesting
Both need rules.
Both can make sense for our life.
What might be the main idea of the passage?
Improving grammar through writing.
Forgetting grammar when writing.
Grammar is not horrible.
What is grammarphobia?
语篇解读
本文是说明文,谈到了学生为之色变的语法。患有语法恐惧症的人,要认识到语法就像游戏规则一样是必须存在的,它可以帮助我们平时的交流和学习,所以没有必要对此感到恐惧。
B 细节理解题。第一段指出grammarphobia 是对语法的恐惧,第二段倡导grammarphobes不要害怕语法,由此可知,grammarphobes是指那些害怕语法的人,故选B。
B 词义扒测题。结合后面一句的“You have to put your words together the right way” 及下一句中的“… if they aren't put together correctly”可知,语法就像帮助人们把头脑中的词汇合在一起的操作指南,故选B。
C 细节理解题。这里把 交流和打扑克做了比较,认为它们相似的原因是无论是打扑克还是交流都必须遵循一定的规则,没有规则的话,就达不到沟通或娱乐的目的,故选C。
C 主旨大意题。本文开头得到人们害怕语法,害怕出现语法错误,而作者认为语法的存在是合理的,我们学习语言必须遵循一定的规则,所以没有必要对语法感到恐惧,因此C项符合题意。

As a professor at a large American university,I often hear a phrase from students:“I’m only a 1050.” The unlucky students are speaking of the score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT),which is used to determine whether they will be admitted to the college or university of their choice,or even have a chance to get a higher education at all.The SAT score, whether it is 800,1100 or 1550,has become the focus at this time of their life.
It is obvious that if students value highly their test scores, then a great amount of their selfrespect is put in the number.Students who perform poorly on the exam are left feeling that it is all over. The low test score, they think, will make it impossible for them to get into a good college. And without a degree from a_prestigious_university,they fear that many of life’s doors will remain forever closed.
According to a study done in the 1990s,the SAT is only a reliable indicator of a student’s future performance in most cases.Interestingly,it becomes much more accurate when it is set together with other indicators—like a student’s high school grades.Even if standardized tests like the SAT could show a student’s academic proficiency(学业水平),they will never be able to test things like confidence, efforts and will power, and are unable to give us the full picture of a student’s potentialities(潜力).This is not to suggest that we should stop using SAT scores in our college admission process. The SAT is an excellent test in many ways, and the score is still a useful means of testing students. However,it should be only one of many methods used.
1.The purpose of the SAT is to test students’________.
A.strong willB.academic ability
C.full potentialities
D.confidence in school work
2.Students’ selfrespect is influenced by their________.

3.The underlined phrase “a prestigious university” probably means “________”.

B.a technical university
C.a traditional university
D.an expensive university
4.This passage is mainly about________.
A.how to prepare for the SAT
B.stress caused by the SAT

D.the SAT and its effects

It is over 40 years since first atomic bomb was dropped on a major city in Japan. Yet even now its effects are showing themselves and may continue to do so for years to come. Much effort and human energy have been used to try to prevent such a terrifying thing from happening again. So far there is no guarantee that it will not. Countries which already possess nuclear knowledge and resources have bombs stored away which are powerful enough to wipe out all life on earth. But this is not all. Other countries, which previously were not so advanced in technology, are gradually buying materials that can be used for making atomic devices. This nuclear energy will naturally be of great value in helping the economy of poorer nations.
The generation of electricity through nuclear power came directly from the original work on the atom bomb. Because of the increase in demand for energy and the possibility of decreasing supplies of oil and natural gas, the interest in electricity has increased. One of the by-products of nuclear power stations is plutonium (钸) produced from unclear fuel: plutonium is ingredient (成分) in bomb-making. It means that there are far more opportunities for the manufacture of bombs.
This brings the problem to a full circle again. How can something so valuable and useful be controlled so that it works for the benefit and not the destruction of man? (from www.nmet168.com)
1. The effects of dropping the first atomic bomb ________.
A. are not over
B. may go on forever
C. could last much longer
D. will not be over in the near future
2. The writer says that enough atomic bombs have already been manufactured to ________.
A. wipe out Japan
B. last forever
C. act as a peace-keeping device
D. destroy all living things
3. The advantage of less developed countries being able to make atomic devices is that it ______.
A. gives them more opportunities for work
B. will help poor countries to become richer
C. will enable them to make better explosives
D. will be of great value to them
4. The second paragraph tells us that the increased demand for electricity today ________.
A. has led to the decrease in supplies of oil
B. means that more countries are interested in nuclear power
C. has increased the risk of accidental explosions
D. has increased the very means of producing more atomic bombs

The origin of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, an area in the present-day Turkey. By all accounts St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. After his death around 340 A. D. he was buried in Myra, but in 1087 Italian sailors were believed to steal his remains and removed them to Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas’ popularity throughout Europe.
His kindness and reputation for generosity gave rise to claims that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. St. Nicholas became the patron(保护神)saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cap, flowing white beard, and bishop’s mitre. In Greece, he was the patron saint of sailors; in France, he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium, the patron of children and travelers. Thousands of churches across Europe were dedicated(供奉的)to him and sometime around the 12th century an official holiday was created in his honor. The Feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated on December 6 and the day was marked by gift-giving and charity.
After the Reformation, European followers of St. Nicholas declined, but the legend was kept alive in Holland where the Dutch spelling of his name Sint Nikolass was eventually transformed to Sinterklaas. Dutch children would leave their wooden shoes by the fireplace, and Sinterklaas would reward good children by placing treats in their shoes. Dutch colonists brought this tradition with them to America in the 17th century and here the English name of Santa Claus appeared.
