A young man on camera names the person who’s challenged him and pours the contents of a bucket(水桶)over his head.He is soon soaked(浸泡) in frothy, soapy water. This is part of a campaign to raise awareness about Ebola prevention in West Africa.

Ivory Coast’s “Lather Against Ebola” campaign, beautiful songs and comedies are being used by West Africans to educate people on how to avoid getting the deadly disease, which has infected more than 2,600 people and killed more than 1,400 in four countries across the region, according to the World Health Organization.

The “Lather Against Ebola” campaign was inspired by the ice bucket challenge that has collected tens of millions of dollars for the ALS Association, which raises money for Lou Gehrig’s disease(葛雷克氏症)research.

Ivorian blogger Edith Brou knew the ice bucket campaign was getting lots of attention and wanted to make it more relevant in her home country.Despite bordering Guinea and Liberia, two countries that have been hit hard by the Ebola outbreak,Ivory Coast has not yet to record a single case, and Brou wants to keep it that way.

“Our greatest threat right now is Ebola,” she said.“It is spread through contact with the bodily fluids of infected people and can be partly prevented by simple measures like regular hand-washing.”

Those who accept the “Lather Against Ebola” challenge are expected to soak themselves with soapy water and hand out three bottles of hand sanitizer(洗手液).Those who reject the soaking are expected to distribute nine.Since it launched on Aug.18,dozens of participants have posted soap-soaking photos to social media.

“Tipping” is handled very differently in the UK and America. It’s important to get this right when you visit each place as it can affect whether the staff in bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels, hairdressers, and the drivers of taxis or buses think that you are lovely, rude or strange.

In the UK the reason for tipping is to show that you really liked the service. In the UK we have a high minimum wage, and no one can be paid below this amount for any work,so when you tip,it is mainly showing politeness to the service person, and to acknowledge that they did an excellent job.

You can tip more or less depending on how good you thought the service was.The average tip is around 10%-20%.If you don’t like the service, don’t tip! This is the case even if “service” has been added to your bill.If you are a student, traveler on a budget,or simply can’t afford to,it’s also OK not to spend the extra money.

In the US,you will often hear “tips” called “service”.It is essential to tip in the US,because the waitresses, bar staff in these industries are paid a low wage which they cannot afford to live on,and therefore your tip is much needed by them.It is actually part of the payment that you make and very often is not optional!Especially in restaurants,if you do not pay the service, you have not paid your entire bill,so watch out!

Normally,we talk about tipping for restaurants. In a good restaurant, many people tip either 15% or 20%.It depends on the type of restaurant and whether they get good service or not.The same is true for a taxi driver.

1.The passage is developed mainly by .

  A.explaining effect and causes

  B.giving typical examples

  C.describing the detailed ways

  D.comparing the differences

2.Which of the following may not tip in the UK?

A.A school teacher. B.A middle school student.

C.A government officer. D.A shop keeper.

  3.In America,you tip mainly to .

  A.enjoy more service

  B.show satisfaction with the service

  C.help the servicemen support themselves

D.make a good impression on servicemen

4.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.You’d better always tip for the service in America.

B.Taxi drivers don’t charge tips in America.

C.You tip more to taxi drivers than waitresses.

D.You needn’t pay your entire bill.

  Evaluating sources(来源)of health information

Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation.A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health infomation.Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinion, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources. 1

Go to the original source.Media reports often simplify the results of medical research.Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science.Think about the type of study. 2

Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome;this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result. 3 Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.

Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is.Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements. 4 Evaluate “scientific”statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术).

5 Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.
