Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.

There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”

38 You might represent each letter with a number, For example, Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 20 13 5.”

A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example “bridge“ might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.” 40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.

  A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.

Everyone knows that fish is good for health.

  16

But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t difficult.

  17

This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

  18

Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh.

  19

When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish.   20   First, lean it and season it with your choice of spices(调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready to serve.

  The Science of Risk-Seeking

Sometimes We decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking.

  71

Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.

The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring.

  72

As the quality of Risk-taking was passed from on ration to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.

So why aren抰 we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one Killed. A few daring survived, though, along owith a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it.

  73

No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years.

  74

To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.

Mean taking some risks, so your brain raisers your tolerance for risk as well.

  75

For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.

As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we抣l continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.

  A. It all depends on your character.

  B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.

  C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of susrvival.

  D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. 16

In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.

One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women.

  17

Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.

18   They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally ger sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men.19    Scientists are still not exactly sure how influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. 20   A.However, women, on average, live longer. B .The biological factor plays an important part. C. Women are also helped by their female genes. D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way. E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities. F. Therefore, women are more healthy than men and can live a better life. G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control carious body functions.

Five Things Nobody Told Me about College

As I type this , I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of

insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5things nobody

  told me about college:

  61

Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to purse within the first quarter of attendance . During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR),I

thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that’s what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.

  62

In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take advantage

of the conferences, research, internships ,and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor’s office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.

  63

College is where you meet your birdesmaids,

neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in . You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient

to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.

  64

As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor, asking him for support towards my initiavives, met with the Vive Chancellors, and coorerated with my teaching assistances to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.

  65

At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all or your tuition(学费)to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences, 36 .

Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to , misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore, 37.

It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

  38

having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

  39

If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated.

You didn’t lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

  Learn to really trust yourself.

It is putting confidence in someone.

Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

Remember that you can expect the best in return.

They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.

This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.

Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

  Urbanization

Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago.

71_ . In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history--- a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.

  Britain was only the beginning.

  72_

.The process of urbanization--- the migration (迁移) of people from the countryside to the city--- was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.

In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. 73

  .

Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies. It took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities.

  _74

. Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.

Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.

  75_

. Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.

  A. That kept cities very small.

  B. The rest live in small towns.

  C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered.

  D. Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.

  E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.

  F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.

  G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you,it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial

to your physical and mental health.People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress

Everybody gets stressed from time to time.

  __71__

Some ways of dealing with stress—like screaming or hitting someone—don't solve (解决) much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.

Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:

  (1) Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives.

  __72__

They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.

  (2) Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.

  __73__

  (3) Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business.

  __74__

Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.

  (4) Be positive. Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.

These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.

  __75__

A.Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.

B.Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.

C.Different people feel stress in different ways.

D.Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.

  Empathy

Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join

  groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed, a codirector of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you're showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __72___

There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high selfrespect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __74__“Academics are important. But if you don't have emotional(情感的) intelligence, you won't be as successful in work or in your love life,”she says.

What't the best way to up your EQ(情商)?For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__

To really develop empathy, you'd better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

A.Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

B.That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

C.“One doesn't develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,”Freed says.

D.Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

E.Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.

F.Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of“emotional intelligence”that will help you succeed in many areas of life.

G.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.

36.When I started my Ph.D. program, I felt like the dumbest person in every class. I couldn’t believe how many smart people were there. I didn’t know if I could measure up to their intelligence or compete in the same league with them. Years later, I found out that almost everyone felt this way, too.

You are unique and have special talents. If you can barely make Hamburger Helper , don’t compare yourself to your sister who is a chef(厨师). I’m sure you can do many things that she can’t.  37 You are you. You are not your sister.

You need to stop chasing perfection. It doesn’t exist. What’s perfect to me is not perfect to you. So if you think that there is some objective measurement of perfection and that the rest of the world is judging you against, then you are wrong.   38.

39.Our sense of self-worth is based in our thoughts. We have been programmed for many years with thoughts about ourselves. Messages come from our parents, our peers, teachers, the media and our own labels. But guess what? They are only thoughts. Just because you think these thoughts, it doesn’t make them true.    40.

  A. You have the power to change your future.

  B. So focus on your own passions and talents.

  C. You are not the only one who feels this way.

  D. If you love yourself for who you are, other people will notice.

  E. You need to change your thought patterns.

When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.

  37

  .

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.

  38

It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.

  39

On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.

  40

In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

  A. Then a third level appeared.

  B. Different people have different wants on each level.

  C. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.

  D. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears

  E. At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

  F. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

Five Ways to Work Smarter, Not Harder

No matter how hard we work, it seems that there is never enough time to get all the important tasks done. Rather than working longer, consider working smarter, not harder. Here are some ways to work smarter:

Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan.

  36

Schedule your tasks throughout the days, weeks, and months, but do it ahead of time.

Set your goals. As a part of your work plan, you should set clear and measurable goals. Goals should state which tasks are to be completed and when they get completed. Rather than setting firm deadlines, which can lead to pressure and stress, allow a period of time to reach goals.

  37

  38

Develop a consistent daily work schedule and stick to it! If a typical workday consists of some writing tasks(emails, reports), one-on-one meetings, and processing data, set aside specific time each day to accomplish each kind of tasks.

  Delegate(授权)effectively.

  39

The person who tries to do everything himself or herself not only is overloaded and overstressed, but is bad for their colleagues, by not allowing them to be challenged and grow by taking on important duties.

Don’t make work harder than it actually is. Much of the pressure is produced by ourselves.

  __40

We feel like we should do more. Remember that tasks should be completed step by step. Focus on each step rather than on the entire project, which can help us cut down on feelings that we are “overwhelmed”.

  A. Stick to your plan.

  B. We set unrealistic goals or standards for ourselves.

  C. Also, take time to reward yourself for achieving a goal.

  D. Organize your workday.

  E. We cannot expect to complete the tasks quickly.

  F. Learn which tasks can be delegated and which need personal attention.

  G. It is a well-thought-out plan to help guide and direct work activities.

Do you have a spare room in your house? Do you like to share your drive way in front of your garage with others? Both of these can help you make money.

  36

Perhaps the best-known example of a company in this field is Airbnb – an American web business which allows you to rent out your spare room to holidaymakers. It says it operates in 34,000 cities and it has 800,000 listings of rooms and apartments.

  37

A British company is doing something with parking spaces. JustPark’s founder, Anthony Eskinaizi, says, “when I had the original idea, I spotted a driveway close to a sports stadium. It would have been so convenient if I could have just parked in the driveway rather than in a commercial car park.”

  38

Around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on the website, and he says around half a million drivers use it.

  39

They are people who run things like traditional hotels and commercial car parks. They are afraid of ending up losing money.

  40

Regulations for these new businesses are unclear. How will renting out your driveway affect your neighbour? Because this a new business world, those rules aren’t there yet.

  A. And there is another problem.

  B. A commercial car park is inconvenient.

  C. And his great idea has proved a success.

  D. But the new business of renting has its competitors.

FIVE WAYS TO KILL YOUR DREAMS

I dedicated the past two years to understanding how people achieve their dreams. When we think about the dreams we have, and the footprint we want to leave in the universe, it is striking to see how big of an overlap there is between the dreams that we have and projects that never happen. So I'm here to talk to you today about five ways how not to follow your dreams.

  61. ______

You know the story, right? The tech guy built a mobile app and sold it very fast for a lot of money. You know, the story may seem real, but I bet it's incomplete. If you go investigate further, the guy has done 30 apps before and he has done a master's on the topic, a Ph.D. He has been working on the topic for 20 years. This is really interesting. I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it's an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you've done in your life through that moment.

  62. ______

Constantly, people want to help out, right? All sorts of people: your family, your friends, your business partners, they all have opinions on which path you should take: "And let me tell you, go through this pipe." But whenever you go inside, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And you need to make those decisions yourself. No one else has the perfect answers for your life. And you need to keep picking those decisions, right? The pipes are infinite and you're going to bump your head, and it's a part of the process.

  63. ______

So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue, and everything is set — time to settle. When I launched my first book, I worked really, really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil. With that, over three million people downloaded it, over 50,000 people bought physical copies. When I wrote a sequel, some impact was guaranteed. Even if I did little, sales would be okay. But okay is never okay. When you're growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak. Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that's great already. But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions. That's why I decided, with my new book, to go to every single state of Brazil. And I can already see a higher peak. There's no time to settle down.

  64. ______

I constantly see people saying, "Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest." "Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn't go well." Or, "I can't find good talent; my team is so below expectations." If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, it may be hard to find talent. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one invested in your idea, if no one bought your product, for sure, there is something there that is your fault. Definitely. You need to get your dreams and make them happen. And no one achieved their goals alone. But if you didn't make them happen, it's your fault and no one else's. Be responsible for your dreams.

  65. ______

Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, they were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work. You could see that they were sweating and this was tough. And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak. Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? I'm going to celebrate, so, "Yes! We made it, we're at the top!" Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, "Okay, let's go down." Life is never about the goals themselves. Life is about the journey. Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it's a magical place where happiness will be all around. But achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not. The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That's the best way.

13.【河南省郑州市2016年高三上学期第一次质量预测】Every scientific field uses the scientific method to conduct experiments. Performing experiments is very important in the field of psychology (心理学). Before beginning a study, however, any scientist who wishes to perform an experiment should be familiar with the steps of the scientific method.

  36

◆ Form a hypothesis (假设). It is an educated guess about what will happen during the study.

  37

Coming up with a hypothesis before you start can help guide your experiment.

◆ Plan out a study. Planning out the experiment is essential because the psychologist needs to know if they have time, materials, and testing area prepared beforehand. This step also helps the scientist to determine if they will be performing descriptive or experimental research. The ideal situation is to always perform experimental research.

  38

Descriptive research simply collects data regarding the problem and forms a hypothesis according to the data.

  ◆ Collect data.

  39

If the data collected is not recorded and organized, the entire efforts of the study may be wasted. The best way to do this may be to record the proceedings so that no details are lost.

  ◆ Analyze the data.

Once all the data has been collected and organized, it must be analyzed. Using previous research or scientific information about the problem, the psychologist must apply the new data gathered.

◆ Publish the information learned. The final step of the scientific method in psychology is publishing the results of the study.

  40

Most psychological experiments are published in scientific journals.

  A. It is based on scientific facts, not just opinions.

  B. Read on to find out how to use the scientific method in psychology.

  C. Before psychologists start the experiment, they must plan out the steps.

  D. This helps other psychologists to learn about and use the new information.

  E. The scientific method has proved to be an effective way to conduct research.

  F. To fully understand the study, each part of the experiment must be recorded.

  G. Sometimes, however, this is impossible and descriptive research will have to be used.

  39

  How to Survive Exam Stress

Exam time is one of the most stressful in school, whether it is high school, college or graduate school. Even the best students feel the pressure. The first sign of a problem while preparing for an exam is worry.

  36

If we can get rid of worries, or at least control them, then we’re in a much better position to do well on our tests. Take the following steps to survive exam stress and increase your overall performance as a result.

  37

What causes you anxiety when you are studying? Too much noise? Then move to a quieter place. Delayed work? Catch up with your studies a couple nights before. That way you can save the final night before the exam to review and get a good night of sleep.

The second way to deal with worry is to replace thoughts. Suppose you wake up at three in the morning and you’re worried about an exam. What do you do?

  38

Doing something productive might allow you to sleep better when you finally do go back to bed.

Another way to replace negative thoughts is to do something physically active. Work out. Take a quick walk or a nice run.

  39

For example, I might worry about the exam having surprise questions that I’m not prepared to answer. But I can put those thoughts aside by reminding myself that I’ve taken many exams and I’ve handled surprise questions before.

The third option is to treat the symptoms. Keep things in perspective. Think of one final exam that causes you the most anxiety. Now think of the worst thing that could happen. If you’ve prepared, then likely the worst grade you could get is a C. And, if you’ve been applying what we’ve been talking about, then you’ll likely do no worse than a B.

  40

  A. How bad is that really?

  B. The first is to delete the causes.

  C. Another idea is to think positive thoughts.

  D. Worry robs us of energy, focus and motivation.

  E. How about getting up and studying for an hour?

  F. What we should do is to think positively and get rid of it.

  G. So we are supposed to make our effort to improve our surroundings.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, But it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, Concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 3 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material.

If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over-worried.

You will probably discover them after you have tried these.

  A. This will help you understand the next class.

  B. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

  C. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

  D. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

  E. Plan your time carefully.

  F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

  G. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

Question: My 14-year-old son is very disrespectful to my husband and me, and we don’t know what to do about it. We tell him to get home before dark, but he is often late, and then we wait, worry and sometimes get close to calling the police. And so what happens when he does come home? We have a big argument. Can you help us?

Answer: Your son should, of course, come in before dark, not because you say so, but because it is his responsibility and because you would worry about him if he didn’t come home when he promised. 1________________

Just tell him that he has to be home on time if he wants to go out next time — and that this is his choice, not yours.

His disrespect is part of a bigger issue. Your son desires independence because the young always do when they hit puberty (青春期), somewhere between 13 and 16. New hormones (荷尔蒙), a new ability to think in abstractions and a new need to pull away from their parents all contribute to this desire. 2_________________

Your son may also be acting up because your discipline hasn’t kept up with his growth. A child hates to be corrected when his parents use the same words and same tone of voice they used when correcting him a year ago. 3___________

He won’t even argue with you too much, as long as you listen to his rants (咆哮) and consider his reasons when you have to say no. These are all signs that you know that your respect is as important to him as his respect is to you. 4__________ This doesn’t accomplish anything and is bound to worsen your relationship.

Your child not only needs your respect, he also needs you to encourage his dreams, no matter how strange they are. 5___________ Now is the time to lower your expectations, give as few orders as possible (but stick to the ones you give), pay more attention to your son’s good behavior than his bad, and give twice as many smiles as you get.

  A. But don’t worry.

  B. He wants you to react to him at the age he is today.

  C. But don’t argue about it.

  D. If you don’t listen and consider, he won’t hear a word you say.

  E. So boys and girls are so eager to spread their wings.

  F. They need your sympathy for him when things go wrong, rather than fix them or tell him what he should have done.

  G. He is growing physically, mentally, emotionally and even morally.

  How to protect your ears

You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. 16

  So no harm done…right?

Not quite.Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious--- and irreversible(无法治愈的)--- hearing loss.A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss.17

But the good news is that there plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage — and still listen to the music you love:

Ask around.Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you’re listening to.18

  Turn it down.

Buy noise-canceling headphones.A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volumes.

  Take breaks.19

So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.

  20

You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts — or while playing or practicing your own music — without changing the quality of the sound.

  A.Use earplugs.

B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.

C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.

D.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.

E.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.

F.Unfortunately, there’s no way to get back hearing you’ve already lost.

G..The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.

How do actors and actresses emorize hundreds of lines? Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.

  36

For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (彩排encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.

  Listen to your cast members.

Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line.

  37

This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed.

  38

Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play’s dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene (剧情). Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members(参演人员and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.

  Think positively and don’t panic.

Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don’t freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again.

  40

  A. Record your lines.

  B. Practice makes perfect.

  C. Read lines loud and repeat them.

  D. Read lines loud and remember them in a short time.

  E. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.

  F. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.

  G. Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.

What is the purpose of reading or studying? If you can’t remember what you read or study, it will be a waste of time.

  36

One useful aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading.

Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, “No, thank you. I’m just looking.”? Both you and she know that if you aren’t sure what you want, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, “Yes, thank you. I want a pair of sun glasses.” She says, “Right this way, please.” It’s quite the same with your studying. If you choose a book, “just looking” for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that—nothing.

  37

Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying “to find out more about”, “to understand the reasons for” and “to find out how”.

  38

Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, “I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America”. Because you know why you are reading or studying, you relate the information to your purpose and remember it better.

Reading is not one single activity.

  39

As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversation with the author.

This additional process of thinking about what you read includes evaluating it, relating it to what you already know, and using it for your own purposes.

  40

One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is distinguishing between facts and opinions. Facts can be checked by evidence. Opinions are one’s own personal reactions. Another part of critical reading is judging sources. Still another part is drawing accurate inferences.

  A. This is an effective studying way.

  B. In other words, a good reader is a critical reader.

  C. You remember better when you know what you’re reading.

  D. At least two important processes go on at the same time.

  E. It is important for students to have a positive attitude to their study.

  F. But if you do know what you want, you are almost sure to get it.

  G. Perhaps you have already discovered some good ways to keep yourself from forgetting.

Sometimes willpower is a lot like the television remote control hard to find just when you want it most.

But there are ways to increase your willpower.

Don’t try to change your economic situation, win a promotion and lose weight all on the same morning. Set one clear, specific goal and make a realistic plan to achieve it.Extra willpower sometimes requires extra energy, so don’t spread yourself too thin.

Whatever your goal is, don’t expect to achieve it overnight.

If you are trying to kick a coffee habit, start by replacing your morning cup of coffee with a glass of water, instead of promising never to drink coffee again. Congratulate yourself on the small achievements. These successes help your willpower grow.

  39

Ask friends, family or colleagues for assistance and tell them exactly how they can help. If your credit card bills have risen, for instance, let friends know that you are cutting back on expenses. Suggest having a common dinner instead of meeting at an expensive restaurant. Find a support group or organization related to your goal and attend their meetings. You can get valuable advice, understanding and information.

If possible, change your environment to encourage positive behavior.Want to get in shape? Keep an extra set of workout clothes in your office as a reminder to stop by the gym on the way home.Quitting smoking?

  40

Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life.

  36

Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings.

But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.

Talk, it really helps. What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help.

  37

Talking helps you move on and let go.

  Write your problems.

  38

When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life.

Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, family… you should still have faith.

  39

Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problem you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours.

  40

Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed.

Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out.

  A. Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born.

  B. When we have a problem, a pressing, critical, urgent, life-threatening problem, how do we try and solve it?

  C. Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with.

  D. But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you.

  E. We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.

  First Job Search Tips

Keep in mind that you may not get the first job you apply for, or the second... A job search can take time, especially if you don't have much experience. Here's how to ensure you're a top-notch candidate for the jobs you are applying for.

Be Persistent. Wait a few days, then follow-up your application with a phone call to the hiring manager reiterating your interest. If you have applied in person, stop in again and mention that you are really interested in the opportunity.

Don't Stop. Don't apply at one place and wait for the phone to ring. Complete as many job applications as you can, and consider a variety of positions.

  36

  .

  37

. Applicants who are only available for limited hours are less likely to get hired than those who are flexible as to when they can work. For example, one candidate for a summer job told the employer that they were only available on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Compare that to another applicant who selected "any" on the Hours Available section of the job applicant and you can see why the second applicant got the job.

  Use Your Connections.

  38

. Does your mom shop regularly at the store where you'd like to work? If so, have her mention that you're looking for a job. That's how I got my first job and how my brother got his first job at the drug store across the street.

Dress Appropriately. When applying for jobs, dress as though you had the job. If you're applying for a retail position, for example, visit the store before you apply to see what the staff is wearing.

  39

. When in doubt, dress up, not down.

Don't Give Up. Job searching isn't easy, especially when you don't have much experience or many skills.

  40

. Your first job will be a stepping stone to your next job - and to your future career.

A.Don’t stop to look for a job.

B.The more you apply, the better chance you have of finding a job.

  C.Be Flexible.

D.It will give you an idea as to how you should dress.

E.You shouldn’t apply for different jobs at the same time.

F.If you have a connection, use it.

  G. Keep trying and keep applying and you will find a job.

What you might consider is 'doing different'. Let me explain.

  1. Do you choose to be happy at work? It's a choice. And you can do it. It's a lot of 'mind over matter'. Mind what's important and the rest doesn't matter. ______37______ When you choose to be happy, you will affect others in the workplace.

  2. _______38_______Michael's definition of a 'drag' is, a person who 'drastically reduces all good.' Of course, they have a bad attitude. If you're this kind of person, you can change. Start being positive. Start by giving subtle and honest praise to co-workers. If you've been a 'drag', don't go to work tomorrow being Pollyana. Just start looking for authentic reasons to give others some praise. It will set you apart from everyone else. People will perceive you as being more caring and more interested in them. Your influence will skyrocket especially if you're in an environment where there is little praise and encouragement.

  3. CHOOSE what you are going to think. Most people have relinquished control of their brains to CNN, ABC, NBC, 'the way things are', society, drama, negativity and the like. It's time to take back charge of your brain. Get your focus directed. Like Paul said in the bible, "Think on these things. Things that are true, are of a good report, are honorable, are positive." _____39_____If you have nothing to read that is positive, send me your email address and I'll send you a free copy of my 'Powerful Attitudes' e-book. Read a little every morning. It will positively and powerfully affect the rest of your day.

When you change you, you will add value in your workplace. Like the late great business philosopher, Jim Rohn said, "You can take out the garbage at McDonalds and earn minimum wage. But if you take out the garbage and whistle as you do it every day, you're likely to earn 50 cents more per hour."

Add value to your workplace by controlling your own attitude. _______40_______.

  A. Start your day by reading something positive.

  B. Think more of what you can do, produce or create.

  C. Just be yourself and create a strong self image.

  D. Are you a 'drag'?

  E. Your attitude and your happiness is important.

  F. Fall in love with it.

  G. You will advance faster and in time, make a lot more money.

  13. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.

  1) Plan your time carefully. _____________36______________. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize everything that is happening to your time.

  2) Find a good place to study. ___________37___________. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

  3) Make good use of your time in class. ___________38__________. Really listening in class means that you don’t have to work too much later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

  4) Study regularly. _____________39________________. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, reading that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

  5) ________40_________. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember what you have just learned in class. The world won’t end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say.

B.Look around the house for a good study area.

C.When you get home from school, go over your notes.

  D.Work hard at your subjects

E.When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.

F.learn from other students when you meet some problems.

G.Develop a good attitude about tests.
