The early 1900s were very different from today.Toys, though they have evolved in many ways, were still the delight of children everywhere.

Theodore Roosevelt's Presidency marks the beginning of the “Teddy Bear”. In the year 1902,toy bears were named “Teddy” after the president's nickname. The Teddy Bear became known worldwide, and is still known and loved today. It was only a few years later that the Teddy Bears were mass produced.

In 1913,an item called the Erector Set was invented. It was a steel, motorized toy that children could use to build models of anything. Its creator was A.C.Gilbert,a medical doctor.

Charles Pajeau created a similar wooden set called Tinker Toys in the year 1914.Tinker Toys were made for younger children.

Raggedy Ann dolls first came on the scene after newspaper cartoonist Johnny Gruelle reproduced the doll he made for his daughter. That was in 1915.

The following year,an architect's son named John Lloyd Wright, invented Lincoln Logs, which were interlocked to make structures.

Two years after Mickey Mouse was created, stuffed(填塞)Mickey Mouse dolls were made by Charlotte Clark. This was the start of Disney merchandise.

The yoyo became popular in the United States after Donald Duncan bought a yoyo company in 1929.

Finally,in 1940,model airplanes were mass produced. They started out as a way for manufacturers to sell planes to the military, but later caught on as a toy.

The toys that we know and love today have had their roots from these ancient times.Isn't it interesting to know that if it hadn't been for all these creative people, most of the games you know today would never have been?

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”

“Two full inches in the first three days!”

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles,or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public,it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug,FDA(Food and Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device,FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily,or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads.FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.

Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律诉讼),and new devices appear continually. Before buying,it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.

40.It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are________.

  A.objective

  B.costly

  C.unreliable

  D.illegal

41.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

B.New products are more likely to be questionable.

C.The production of a device must be approved by FDA.

D.The promoters usually just care about profits.

42.FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product________.

  A.if it is a drug

  B.if it is a device

  C.if its consumers make complaints

D.if its distributors challenge FDA's authority

  43.The Relaxacisor is mentioned as________.

A.a product which was designed to produce electricity

B.a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case

C.a successful advertisement of a beauty product

D.an example of a quality beauty product

Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance.

After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.

Jason Swencki's son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,” says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. “They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone.”

Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.

These days, Thomas's main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses. Fightit.org has raised about $ 23,000—in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.

Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his fulltime job waiting tables. “Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,” says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members. “But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now.”

44.Which of the following is TRUE of Christopher Thomas?

A.He needs to go to the doctor every day.

Motorists who used to listen to the radio or their favorite tunes on CDs may have a new way to entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface.

A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of “melody roads”, which use cars as tuning forks(音叉)to play music as they travel.

The concept works by using grooves(凹槽).They are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. The melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.

Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of high or low notes, and designers are able to create a distinct tune.

Patent documents for the design describe it as notches(刻痕)“formed in a road surface so as to play a melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melodylike tones”.

There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan—one of which plays the tune of a Japanese pop song. Reports say the system was invented by Shizuo Shinoda. He scraped some markings into a road with a bulldozer(推土机)before driving over them and found that they helped to produce all kinds of tones.

The optimal speed for melody road is 44 kph,but people say it is not always easy to get the intended sound.

“You need to keep the car windows closed to hear well,”wrote one Japanese blogger.“Driving too fast will sound like playing fast forward, while driving around 12 mph[20 km/h]has a slowmotion effect, making you almost carsick.”

47.According to the passage, melody roads use________to create different notes.

  A.cars

  B.grooves

  C.spaces between intervals

  D.bulldozers

48.We can learn from the passage that the highness of notes is depended on________.

  A.how far the grooves are

  B.how big the grooves are

  C.the number of the grooves

  D.the speed of the car

49.The underlined word “optimal” in the passage might mean________.

  A.fastest

  B.possible

  .

  C.best

  D.suitable

50.In order to hear the music well, you have to________.

  A.drive very fast

  B.drive slowly

  C.open the windows wide

  D.keep the windows closed

  The

  First Americans

There was a time long ago when a land bridge connected Asia and North America. The first settlers in North America crossed this land bridge from what is now Sibria to Alaska. The people who made this initial crossing were probably following the animals they used for food.

Eventually, the oceans rose and the land bridge between the continents disappeared. The settlers, who I shall call the “First Americans”,could not return to their homeland. __51__

For the next few thousand years, the First Americans migrated south and east throughout North and South America. They made the journey all the way from Alaska to the southern tip of South America, a distance of more than 10,000 miles. __52__

In the far north, above the Arctic Circle, the First Americans became hunters of the ocean.__53__ In the brief summer, they gathered berries and other plants. In the winter, they stayed in lodges much of the time preparing for the next summer. It was a hard life, but they learned to survive in these harsh conditions.

Farther south, in what is now Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, the First Americans became cliff dwellers(悬崖居民). They began by living in caves that already existed in the cliffs.__54__The dwellings they constructed in many ways resembled today's apartment buildings.

__55__They built a system of dams and canals so they could store and use water almost any time of the year. They were so successful that they could raise fruits and vegetables that were not found naturally in the desert.

In Mexico and South America, the First Americans founded civilizations that were among the greatest in the world. They built huge pyramids, lived in fabulous cities, and made great advances in science and mathematics long before the Europeans arrived.

A.They also discovered foods like corn and potatoes.

B.Along the way, they established many different civilizations.

C.The First Americans of the Southwest learned to irrigate the desert.

D.They would have to survive in the New World they had discovered.

E.They built boats of animal skins and hunted or fished for their food.

F.People living near each other tended to share similar environments and customs.

G.They discovered how to add to the caves by building structures of wood and stone.

Though great progress have been made in science these years, there are still many people live in poor conditions. They make their lives by collecting or selling used things. Their children cannot go to school because they had not enough money to send their children there. How do you think so many people still suffer from poverty now? The answer lies on the population explosion. A president of a developing country once said, “It is us who are to blame for the poverty because we used to ‘produce’ child without limit.” Although this few words sound simple enough, they have clear pointed out one of the causes of the population explosion.

take the risk of冒着……

feel at home感到畅快、自在; at heart在内心里(在本质上);at will 随意地;at sight 一见就……。

pick out挑选出,辨认出;stand out突出,出色;make out理解,辨认;stand for代表,象征;take out拿出,取出;stand by支持,拥护,袖手旁观;bring out取出,显示;stand aside躲开,让开。

  5.B

   mind=be careful about 留心,留神。

take on“承担,呈现,雇用”;take in“理解,吸入,欺骗”;take over“接管,接替”,都不符合语境。

  7.A

  8.D it is little/ small/ no wonder that… ……

rather than而不是;or rather更确切地说;more than超过,多余;other than除了。none other than意为“正是”。

I enjoy playing table tennis most…in the

  summer holidays.

whoever引导名词性从句时相当于any person who/the person who“任何人,无论谁,……

14.C 短语be opposed to sth./doing sth. 此处用过去分词作后置定语,相当于定语从句 who was opposed to carrying out…而object to (doing)sth.

Forget about it“算了吧,别提了”;No trouble“不麻烦”;All right“行了,好吧”;You’re welcome“不客气”。

It's also true of children … because of…

on one's behalf 为……

  34.A Kimberly并不仅仅(more than)是其亲生父母的私有财产。more than不仅仅;no more than仅仅;not more than不超过,至多,不比……

  A

根据第二段第二句“…toy bears were named‘Teddy’ after the president's nickname.”

objective“客观的,不带偏见的”;costly“昂贵的”;unreliable“不可靠的”;illegal“不合法的,违法的”。

根据第二段“…diabeticrockstar.com,a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources”可知A项正确。

Father and son visit the online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,” says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. “They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone.”

The melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.

  One possible version:

  Making Friends Selectively or Extensively?

When it comes to whether we should make friends selectively or extensively, there is no complete agreement among people. Some people take it for granted that we should make friends selectively and carefully. However, others maintain that making friends extensively should be regarded as the better choice.

Those people who hold the first opinion believe that it's sensible to look for friends who have similar ideal and outlook on life as well as temperament. In addition, they needn't waste time dealing with the people they don't like and prevent themselves from being affected by those people. However, still others think differently. In their opinions, the more friends we make, the easier our life will be. Besides, they argue that we can absorb and learn from the advantages of different people.

Weighing up these two arguments, I prefer the former one. For one thing, not all friends are suitable for us and easy to get along with. For another, friends with similar goals will help us sweep off difficulties. Considering these, we may reasonably conclude that making friends selectively can bring us true friends.
