BEIJING—Pharmacologist Tu Youyou has become the first scientist on the mainland to win America's respected Lasker Award for her discovery of a new approach to malaria (疟疾) treatment.

The 81yearold was presented with the medical prize by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation on September 23, 2011 in New York.

Tu, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, was praised by the jury (评判委员会) for her “drug therapy (治疗) for malaria that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world,” according to a statement on the foundation's website.

In early 1969, Tu was appointed head of a government project that aimed to eradicate(消灭) malaria, and it was then that she began applying modern techniques with Chinese traditional medicine to find drug therapy for malaria.

After detecting (检测) 380 extracts (提取物) made from 2,000 candidate recipes, Tu and her colleagues obtained a pure substance called “Qinghaosu”, which became known as artemisinin in 1972.

An artemisininbased drug combination is now the standard regimen (养生法) for malaria, and the World Health Organization lists artemisinin and related agents in its catalog of “Essential Medicines”, said a statement from the foundation.

The Lasker Awards are given annually to people who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of human diseases since 1945.

Lasker Awards are known as “America's Nobels” for their knack (熟练技术) of gaining future recognition by the Nobel committee. In the last two decades, 28 Lasker laureates (得奖者) have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, and 80 since 1945.

Ask savvy investors(投资者) how they learned their first lessons about money, and they'll probably tell you lessons their parents taught them.

The money values we learn as children stay with us the rest of our lives. If you are a parent, teaching your children the value of saving and investing will benefit them the rest of their lives. Here's what you can do:

Help your child begin to save. Open savings accounts for your children, and teach them how the bank adds interest to their savings that makes their money grow. Encourage your children to save a little from every bit of money they receive, such as allowances, birthday gifts, etc. You may even want to set up a matching program, contributing fifty cents for each dollar your child saves.

Teach your child about stocks(股票). A child in elementary school can start learning about how businesses work. Once your child understands the basics, ask him or her to think about some of the businesses that might be good stock investments. Then use Morningstar Mutual Fund Guide(available at your library)to find a quality mutual fund that holds some of these companies, or a mutual fund that caters to children such as the Stein Roe Young Investor Fund. Many funds accept regular monthly investments as low as $50 a month, so these funds can be a good way to teach children about the stock market while saving for their college education.

Encourage early IRA(个人退休金账户)saving. The new Roth IRA is a great way for children who are working in summers or after school to begin saving for their future. Imagine how much money you'd have today if you had saved $3,000 a year since you were a teenager!

Let your kids handle their own money. We all learn by doing, so letting your kids manage a segment of their budget(预算)will let them earn valuable financial lessons. They may make mistakes, but they will be small mistakes that may help them avoid larger mistakes as adults.

40.Which would be the best title for this passage?

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural(乡下的) areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.

In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.

In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼)and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.

But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

  A.where people can buy things

B.which is suitable for living in

  C.where people can do business

D.which is near a city center

45.Why do people move to live in cities or towns?

A.Because they can live more comfortably there.

B.Because they like noisy life better than peaceful life.

C.Because they mainly want to find work there.

D.Because they are sure of having a better life there.

46.Which of the following statement is NOT true about the business district?

A.Big companies usually have their main offices in the business district.

B.People usually work and live in the business district.

C.A business district usually lies in the city center downtown.

D.Nearly every major city has its own business district.

Facebook means never having to say goodbye. The social media website has earned a reputation for reconnecting old friends.Last week,a guy whom I hadn't seen since my bachelor party five years ago sent me a friend request.I accepted and waited for “Easy E” to send me a greeting of some kind.He had sought me out, after all.

Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation

At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during your anxious moments.

__51__ A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse.

__52__ When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what we worry about never comes true.

__54__ Everything else you can leave in the hands of God.

It is not easy to deal with all of our fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy. __55__.

B.When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.

give in意为“屈服,让步”;give off意为“发出(光、热、气味等)”;give out意为“分发;泄露;耗尽,用完”;give up意为“放弃”。

turn to意为“求助于”,此处she could turn to为定语从句,引导从句的关系代词whom省略了。turn on“打开”;turn off“关掉”;turn over“翻转”。

set up“建立;成立”;turn up“出现;调大”;fix up“修补”;make up“编造;组成;化妆”。

judging by/ from“从……

the number of“……

advise“建议”,persuade“说服”。

couldn't wait to do sth.“迫不及待做某事”为固定搭配,故选B项。

下文的“I sniffed in the back of the classroom”是线索提示。

do sb.good表示“对某人有好处”。

  24.D 根据下一段中的“I'm sorry you were hurt.”

  One possible version:

  Ms_Kate,

I'm_Li_Hua._Four_years_ago,_I_received_your_letter_and_schooling_fees. I'm very grateful for your kindness and generosity.

But for your help, I couldn't enjoy a wonderful college life in the beautiful campus right now. I've made a lot of friends here. Moreover, I am studying hard so as to acquire an abundant knowledge of English, which is my major. In fact, I'm making progress each day. Only in this way can I learn more and use what I've known to help those in need as well. Besides, I'm determined to go back to my hometown after graduation and devote myself to building my hometown, to make it more prosperous and beautiful.

Words seem to fail me when I try once more to express my thanks to you, and I'll keep my promise and not let you down.

  Yours_sincerely,

  Li_Hua
