  Cloze Test

  A

It was my son’s 10th birthday. He was so excited because the

  1

he desired finally arrived. When he looked at the

  2

box, he guessed that it contained a basketball or something like the remote control aircraft that he had long been

  3

. But after he joyfully opened it and dug through three sheets of bubble wrap (气泡垫) and millions of pieces of Styrofoam (泡沫塑料), he

  4

a cardboard and colorful plastic paper package of pencils. His heart sunk. He was very

  5

. So was I. It was not because of the pencils but the

  6

! We need to do something about too much packaging.

First of all we create too much

  7

with the unused packaging. The cardboard boxes used for shipping

  8

1/3 of the U.S. solid waste. I do

  9

that some breakable products need to be

  10

with extra packaging, but pencils aren’t that breakable.

  That

  11

packaging brings me to my next topic — cutting down on packaging. According to the Environmental Defense Fund,

  12

we cut down the use of packaging from 100 tons to 90 tons, we can

  13

more than 5,372 pounds of waste and more than 34,000 pounds of CO2 equivalent (当量). That makes a big

  14

. What I am saying is that cutting down on packaging

  15

  makes things better.

Finally cutting down on packaging helps companies reduce

  16

! Most products people buy over the Internet are pretty small,

  17

the company that is shipping that product can just buy the small size box for that product, which will save money. As a final point we should require people to

  18

packaging since some of them are still useful so that we can have a cleaner

  19

, save money, and even have less solid waste. I think we should take action now and cut down on packaging

  20

for the good of the world.

for me. I could feel his

. As I turned to walk down the corridor to the elevator, he was delighted and stood in the doorway, smiling, nodding and giving

and he is always in my heart as I feel I am in his. I think it is because when we face the
