[2016·武邑中学仿真]Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I've ever had: Be bold and brave—and mighty(强大的)forces will come to your aid.

Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite_off_more_than_you_are_sure_you _can_eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas—even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim.“I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet (子弹)—and stopped him cold.”

Boldness—a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you'll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

  Passage 2

I log onto a computer at the doctor's office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (处方).

I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled.

And when I see the introduction of yet more selfservice checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting, “When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!”

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, reallife cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情) for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

What technological device would do, any of this? I don't want to go back to the Stone Age, but I'm also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you're chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.

Machines can be efficient and costeffective and they often get the job done just fine.

But they lack an element so important to everyday life.

Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart.

It is something no machine will ever have.

It is being human that prompts us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.

★1.What's the author's purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?

A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.

B.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.

C.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.

D.To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctor in the future.

根据第五段第二句“...but I'm also worried about a world run by machines.”

★2.Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?

  A.Robots are indifferent and emotionless.

  B.Robots can't provide efficient services.

C.Robots don't offer to give store coupons.

D.Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.

根据第六段以及第七段的一、二句“Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart.

It is something no machine will ever have.” 故选A项。]

★3.What's the author's attitude toward machines?

A.He wishes one day they would come to life.

B.He is absolutely against their existence in his life.

C.He doesn't like they get involved in his life too much.

D.He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.

[2016·冀州中学期中]If you need glasses to read this, you are among the majority of Chinese students. That's because most students in China are shortsighted which means they can only see things close up and distant things will be blurry. Fourfifths of high school students wear glasses and now more and more children in primary school need glasses, too.

This epidemic of poor eyesight has two very simple causes:

too much time spent indoors studying and too little time spent outdoors playing. Reading and writing for hours and hours, sometimes in poorly lighted rooms, causes eyesight to weaken. But students have to do this because there is so much pressure on them to succeed in school. And because they spend so much time indoors at school and at home, they have less time to spend outdoors enjoying the sun.

The sun, as a consequence, is important in developing good eyesight.

Exposure to daylight releases a chemical in the eyes that prevents, or at least delays, shortsightedness. According to a study by Ian Morgan of Australian National University, Australian children and Chinese children have the same level of eyesight before they start school, but once they enter primary school, Chinese children only spend about an hour a day outside, while Australian children spend three to four hours each day in the sunshine. The result is that while about 40 percent of Chinese primary school students need glasses, only three percent of Australian children do.

Wearing glasses may not seem like a big deal. For some, wearing glasses can even be an opportunity to make a fashion statement. But poor eyesight at a young age can have serious long term consequences. As you get older, your eyesight can worsen and lead

  to

  things

  like

  macular

a condition of the eyes for which there is no cure and which can eventually lead to blindness.

With all that in mind, don't you think it's time to give your eyes a break? Try spending a little less time inside and go for a walk in the park, instead. It's the healthy thing to do and your eyes will thank you for it.

[2016·衡水中学仿真]Papa, as a son of a dirtpoor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There's so much to learn,” he'd say. “Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children would be denied (拒绝) an education.

Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.

Then came the moment—the time to share the day's new learning.

Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.

“Felice,” he'd say, “tell me what you learned today.”

“I learned that the population of Nepal is...”

  Silence.

Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation (拯救) of the world would depend upon it. “The population of Nepal. Hmm. Well...” he'd say. “Get the map; let's see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal.

This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts.

As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another's education. And by looking at us,

  listening to us,

respecting our input, affirming (肯定) our value, giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestionably our most influential teacher.

Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting (传授)what Papa had known all along—the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might prove useful.

Cooking programs and classes for children seem to positively influence children's food preferences and behaviors,

according to a recent review. And, although the review didn't look at longterm effects of such programs,

the findings suggest that such programs might help children develop longlasting healthy habits.

This research comes at a time when childhood obesity (肥胖) rates have been rising rapidly. More than onethrid of adolescents in the United States were obese in 2017, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This trend has been caused, at least in part, by a significant decrease in the amount of meals that people consume at home since the 1980s, according to background information in the study.

Cooking education programs, such as Food Explorers, teach children about new healthy foods and how to prepare them. They also stress the importance of eating five fruits and vegetables every day. A volunteer parent explains a new food to the group, and the kids make something based on the lesson, such as fruit or vegetable salad. Depending on the program, kids may be sent home with information about healthy foods to bring to their parents, the review explained.

The study team reviewed eight other studies that tested different types of cooking education programs. Children in these classes were between 5 and 12 years old, according to the review. The goal of the study team was to learn more about developing an efficient program to encourage healthy food choices that last a lifetime. The study found that it is particularly important to expose kids to healthy foods on a number of occasions. This makes them feel comfortable with the new foods, which helps them build healthy habits.

The study stressed the importance of getting parents involved in (参与) their children's eating habits.

Parents who are unable to enroll their kids in a cooking class can achieve similar benefits by having their kids help them while they prepare meals at home. Children are more comfortable at home, which makes them more receptive to new foods because they will make the connection to a positive experience.

Gregory Kloehn digs through dustbins every day, but not for the reason that most people would think. He isn't homeless. In fact he is trying to help the homeless.

Gregory began his life as a sculptor. But he often felt that his sculpture, which just stood in rich people's houses for years, lacked a meaningful purpose. So in 2011 he decided to put his artistic energies into creating homes to sell—not ordinary homes but small structures built entirely from recycled materials.

The thought of creating homes for the homeless didn't occur to him until the year 2017, when a homeless couple asked him for a tarp (防水布).

  Instead of a tarp,

  Gregory

  offered

them something better: a small home with a water tank, a kitchen and a trap for waste. They were so grateful that Cregory decided to focus his efforts on helping house the homeless population in his city. And soon his “Homeless Homes Project” was started.

Before starting a new home, Gregory, goes hunting for materials by digging through dustbins. Everything he finds is usable—refrigerator doors become house doors; washing machine doors often serve as windows, and the tops of cars become strong roofs. He put wheels at the bottom for users to move their homes around easily. Each home takes two to three days to make.

So far Gregory has donated dozens of homes to the city's most needy. While his small lowcost mobile homes are not the final solution to the problem of homelessness, they are really practical and do provide a warm and safe place for the homeless to stay in. They are simply a way for one man to do something nice for those in need of some help.

Gregory has written a book titled Homeless Architecture, where he explains techniques to build those homes and he is now working on weekend workshops. “A lot of people who hear about what I'm doing want to get involved,” he said.“Maybe we can meet someplace and put a couple of homes together.”

B.It takes Gregory a long time to produce a home.

C.Gregory's work requires imagination and creativity.

D.Everything in the dustbins will be used in Gregory's work.

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Gregory's project will help more homeless people.

B.Gregory doesn't need to make small homes now.

C.Gregory's work will completely solve the homelessness problem.

D.A single person can make no difference to social problems.

故选A项。]

[2016·武邑中学一轮检测]WASHINGTON—Patients with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, often develop vitamin deficiencies (缺乏). A new study has found that giving these patients a multivitamin with a mineral supplement (补充)

helps to fight the disease and slows the disease's progression.

SubSaharan Africa has always been the center of the AIDS. In Botswana, despite aggressive prevention campaigns, one out of four adults is infected with HIV. Professor Marianna Baum based her latest research there.

Baum recruited almost 900 newly infected adults who had not yet received the antiAIDS drugs that target the virus.

These adults were then divided into groups that randomly received different combinations of vitamins B, C and E, the mineral selenium (硒) or a placebo (安慰剂).

Most patients with HIV become deficient in these vitamins, which help improve immunity (免疫力). Baum said she initially thought the multivitamins alone or selenium alone would be effective in strengthening the immune system, but found that incorrect.

“We were surprised to find that only the combination was effective,” said Baum.

Research shows that when people with HIV receive antiretroviral drugs (抗逆转录病毒药物) shortly after infection, they can remain healthy and are less likely to pass the virus to others. For many countries, however, the cost of these antiAIDS drugs is

  still

  prohibitive.

Baum said the vitamin and mineral combination treatment should help low income countries better control the virus.

“A simple multivitamin supplementation with selenium provided early in HIV disease can actually slow the HIV disease progression and it is safe. It is low cost and it should be provided very early in HIV infection,” said Baum.

Baum said the supplements are not meant to replace antiretroviral therapy, but can help those who cannot obtain the drugs.

Dr Anthony Fauci, a world famous expert on AIDS, disagrees.

“I haven't read the paper, but having taken care of HIVinfected individuals for three decades, I would doubt that vitamins are going to have a major effect on stopping the virus,” said Fauci.

Fauci said vitamin and mineral supplements may make a patient generally healthier, but the only thing that truly works to stop HIV is antiretroviral treatment.

Baum's study was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

[2016·武邑中学月考]Password strength has been a topic about the Internet lately. I have seen lots of clever methods for generating and remembering strong passwords. Some are better than others, but in my opinion, none are adequate. Here's the problem: it doesn't matter how strong your passwords are if you use the same one on multiple sites. All it takes is for a site to get hacked (侵入), like Gawker media, or even Sony did, and now your superstrong password has been stolen, and every site on which you used that password has been accessed.

So, the bottom line is that no matter how strong your passwords are, and no matter what clever tricks you use to help you remember them, if you surf the Internet often, the only truly secure password system is what you need.

Enter LastPass. It's not the only password manager out there, but I like it the best. You create ONE strong password that you have to memorize and use it to access your LastPass database. The LastPass database is stored online, on LastPass's servers. LastPass recognizes the site you're on and automatically logs you in (after, optionally, asking you to reenter your master password). LastPass also has automatic form fill and automatic password generation. This means that you can have a different, unique, very strong password for every site you log into, but you only have to remember one master password. It's the best of both worlds.

One argument against LastPass is that if their database is attacked, then all of your sites are in danger, and that's true, but given that their entire line of work is keeping that information safe, I'm willing to take that chance.

The alternative is rolling dice (掷骰子) or picking phrases to create passwords, writing all of them down on a piece of paper or something, and then having to manually type them in when I go to a site. A terrible mess.

There is a free version of LastPass, with some additional features unlocked if you pay $12 for a year's subscription.

[2016·衡水中学热身]They only got engaged on Saturday, but it seems that Rochelle Wiseman and Marvin Humes are planning on marrying in March. The pop stars are eager to tie the knot in just ten weeks in order for their big day to coincide with their birthdays. Rochelle, who will turn 23 on March 21, and Marvin, who will celebrate his 27th birthday a few days earlier on March 18, are both keen to turn the events into one big celebration. According to the Daily Star, the couple think it is the perfect excuse to have one huge party.

“After getting engaged this Christmas, Rochelle and Marvin didn't waste any time in thinking about dates,” a source told the newspaper. The couple apparently came to a mutual agreement that they would like to be married by the summer, and then the subject of their birthdays came up. “Rochelle has been telling her pals how excited she is and that she loves the birthday idea,” the source continued. “She thinks combining the events will make it the most amazing threeway celebration ever.”

JLS star Marvin proposed (求婚) to Rochelle during a festive break in Antigua, and The Saturdays singer was keen to announce the news as soon as possible.
