For a 400-year-old art form, operas had a bad fame: overweight actresses singing the words which are hard to understand in one of those romance languages you were supposed to learn in high school. And with tickets costing as much as $145 a performance, opera goers also have a certain appearance in people’s mind: rich, well dressed and old.

But now opera companies around the country are loosening their ties and kicking off their shoes in an attempt to bring the opera to the audience. It needs to keep it alive, the young and not so rich.

Opera producers have found that to attract this crowd, they need to make the opera closer to common people. That means no formal suits or old-styled theatre. And because young people don-t or won’t come to the opera, companies are bringing the opera to them, giving performances in such unusual places as parks, libraries and public schools.

The Houston Grand Opera’s choice is the public library, where it performs 搈obile operas? shortened versions of child friendly operas. This summerth’s production is Hansel & Gretel. By performing smaller versions of large productions, producers are able to make people interested while keeping costs at a reasonable level. The San Francisco Opera, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is staging Cinderella free of charge, keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artist’s Training Program.

  1. Which is the MAIN idea of this passage?

  A. Opera is famous for its long history.

  B. Opera is only performed for rich people.

  C. Young people aren’t interested in opera.

  D. Opera companies are trying to keep opera alive.

  2. The underlined phrase in the second paragraph “loosening their ties and kicking off their shoes” means

  _______.

  A. breaking up the old rules

  B. changing the formal suits

  C. making the audience at ease

  D. advertising themselves

  3. Opera companies prefer to perform short versions because _______ .

  A. it is hard to find long versions

  B. short versions are easy to perform

  C. they can perform in public libraries

  D. they can make more people come to opera

  4. From the passage we can infer that

  _______.

  A. the tickets for operas are very expensive

  B. operas are performed in a difficult language

  C. operas are not so popular an art form today

  D. students enjoy performing operas very much

  Ⅵ. 任务型阅读

  请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

  注意:每个空格只填1个单词。

  Quality after-school programs

Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviours, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.

The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behaviour. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.

Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that afterschool programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage (时量) matters — young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities for positive relationships, skill building, meaningful involvement (参与), expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environments, encourage personalized (个性化的) involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have promising future, how they are designed and run matters.

  Ⅳ. 1. 解析:选A。

The global financial crisis of 2008 has contributed to a fiercer competition in job markets. Increasing numbers of college graduates are finding themselves in a situation where too many jobseekers are fighting for survival. Our class has had a heated discussion on this problem. Students have different ideas.

70% of them think it makes sense that they realize an early employment by lowering their income expectations, thus reducing the burden on their families. They also believe therere better opportunities for development if they go to work in the west or rural areas. 20% of them consider full employment an unrealistic goal, so they choose to continue their further study or go to vocational schools to learn some practical skills to make better preparations for future careers. Finally, the rest 10% determine to set up their own businesses.

As for me, I think after a series of timely measures taken by the government, we are confident and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges and the employment prospects for graduates will be better soon. So all we need to do now is plan and act in ways that reflect the reality, to assure that we make full use of our talent and skills.
