I have been a music fan ever since I was a little kid. It must have been my eldest brother who brought me to the world of music, which later in my life became the source of happiness

and sadness. My brother liked to play the dizi, a very traditional musical instrument which was very popular in the 1970's. Greatly influenced by his enthusiasm to music, I learned to play the dizi in my spare time.

Do you know what the most popular form of culture was in the 1970's? The so-called model dramas, that is, "Modern revolutionary Beijing opera", which were officially formed during the Cultural Revolution. Their materials were from the communist activities or related subjects. From morning till night, you would hear them broadcast over and over again. Frankly speaking, model dramas served as my guide to music to some extent(程度)because the music was really wonderfully made.

Later I met my desk-mate, who was then also a music lover. Having much in common, we soon became good friends. Very often we listened to the radio, learned new songs and then sang them on our way home. I still remember one day in class we even put our radio beneath the surface of our desk and kept our ears close to it, listening to the pop songs of that time with the teacher giving his lesson in front. Does it shock you? At the beginning of the 1980's, films were very much popular with young people and the songs in them would soon become the hits. At the same time, many film stars like Liu Xiaoqing, Chen Chong captured the hearts of us late 1960's generation.

I spent my high school days in the world of music and continued my passion for music in my spare time in my following years.

During the 20th century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century probably has been in her middle 20's and would be likely to have seven or eight children. By the time the youngest was 15, the mother would have been in her early 50's and would expect to live a further 20 years, during which chance and health made

it hard for her to get paid work.

Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman's

youngest child will be 15 when she is 45 and she can be expected to live another 35 years and is likely to get paid work until 60.

This important change in women's life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a fulltime job. However, when they married they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is 16, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return to work later. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties of family life.

  .

  A. plays a greater part in doing housework

  B. does almost all of the housework

  C. feels unhappy about his wife's going out to work

Tens of thousands of travelers from around the world pelted each other with tonnes (公吨) of tomatoes on Wednesday in a festival in the eastern Spanish town of Bunol.

The one-hour bloodless battle, known as the Tomatina, left the town awash in a sea of tomato pulp(果肉).

The local government brought in some 100 tonnes of ripe tomatoes on trucks for the about 40,000 tourists who visited the town of just 9,000 local people for the yearly festival, which has taken place for more than 60 years. Many of them were shirtless while others wore old clothes and hard hats.

Afterwards, workers clean the walls and streets to remove the tomato pulp.

Spanish media said the tomatoes cost the local government around 28,000 euros (35,000 dollars), about one third of the total amount of money for the festival, most of which goes to pay for security, cleaning services, and mobile toilets.

More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of incidents.

The Tomatina is held each year in Bunol, located in a rich area some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of the coastal city of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, on the last Wednesday in August.

The origins of the event are unclear although it is thought to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in the mid-1940s in the city.

It has grown in size as international newspaper coverage brought more and more people to the festival.
