“I am going to buy only one pair! ” “I know that, ” said he,

“but I want you to see how marvelously beautiful these are.

Aren’t they wonderful? ” There was on his face an expression of solemn and holy delight as if he were revealing to me the mysteries of his religion.

I became far more interested in him than in the socks.

I looked at him in amazement.

  “My friend, ” said I,

“if you can keep this up,

if this is not merely the enthusiasm that comes from novelty(新奇),

  from having a new job,

if you can keep up this enthusiasm and excitement day after day,

in ten years you will own every sock in the United States. ”

  I thought of another salesman,

who displays no interest either in you or in the goods he is paid to sell.

  Yet possibly that very clerk who is now so apathetic(冷漠的)began his career with hope and enthusiasm like the one we mentioned. The daily grind was too much for him;

  the novelty wore off;

his only pleasures were found outside of working hours.

  He became a mechanical,

  not inspired salesman.

  After being mechanical,

  he became incompetent;

then he saw younger clerks who had more enthusiasm in their work,

  promoted over him.

  He became sour.

  That was the last stage.

  His usefulness was over.

I have observed this decline in the lives of so many men in so many occupations that I have come to the conclusion that the surest road to failure is to do things mechanically.

6. How did the writer go to the sock shop according to the passage?

  A. He went there on purpose.

  B. He went there in his car.

  C. He went there by chance.

  D. He followed someone there.

I turned into the first sock shop that caught my eye, 7. When the boy clerk received him enthusiastically,

he felt _____ at his behavior.

  A. disappointed

  B. crazy C. confused

I looked at him in amazement. 8. From the third paragraph we can infer _____ .

  A. the salesman began his work without enthusiasm B. the daily grind can make one lose interest in work C. enthusiasm is very important in one’s career D. being mechanical means finding pleasure over work 【解析】选C。 9. What is the best title of the passage?

  A. A pair of socks B. An enthusiastic boy clerk C. An apathetic salesman D. A salesman’s last stage in his work 【解析】选A。 10. It is certain that _____ can lead to failure according to the passage.

  A. doing things mechanically B. being too modest to others C. being hard at others D. being useless to society

【解析】选A。 After the secretary left, this position was still ________. And the personnel department was very careful to find a man who fitted the job very much.

Even plants can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3, 000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared (红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest (害虫)problems.

Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3, 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running“fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.

The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, ” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

1. Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are _____ . A. sprayed with pesticides B. facing an infrared scanner C. in poor physical condition D. exposed to excessive sun rays 【解析】选C。 . . an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running‘fevers’”,说明植物在发“高烧”,也就是说,“身体状况”不佳时才会散发热,所以选项C符合题意。 2. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to______.

  A. estimate the damage to the crops B. measure the size of the affected area C. draw a color-coded map D. locate the problem area 【解析】选D。 . . showing where plants were running ‘fevers’. Farmers could then spot-spray,. . . ”说明目的是确定有问题的区域,以使农民有针对性地喷杀虫剂。显然,选项D(确定有问题的地域)为最佳选项。 3. Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by _____ .

  A. resorting to spot-spraying B. consulting infrared scanning experts C. transforming poisoned rain D. detecting crop problems at an early stage 【解析】选A。 依据文章第二段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. ”(采取点喷,农民们可以节省平时用量的50%至70%的杀虫剂),选项A符合题意。 4. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties— _____ .

  A. the lack of official support B. its high cost C. the lack of financial support D. its failure to help increase production 【解析】选C。 依据文章第三段的“The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984,after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. ”,可以看出红外线扫描技术应用于农业遇到了一些问题,原因有两个:一是农民对新技术的抵制,二是难以找到长期赞助商。文章中还有一处明显的提示出现在最后一句:“But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago. ”从该句提供的信息同样可以反推出10年前的情形,所以选项C正确。 5. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of _____ .

  A. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce B. growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture D. full support from agricultural experts 【解析】选B。 依据文章第三段“But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation. ”,可知B项(出于对杀虫剂过度使用的担心)符合题意。 (B)

One fine afternoon I was walking along the Fifth Avenue,

  Five years ago,

David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict(有瘾的人), ” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled. ” Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and a sports shirt—to the office.

He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever, ” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable. ”

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States.

The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual.

  In the early 1990s,

many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday).

This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing. ” said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes?

One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work, ” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code. ” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes.

In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company,

85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employees’ morale(心境, 士气).

Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.

Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive,

if you have to wear one every day, ” one person said. “For the same amount of money,

you can buy a lot more casual clothes. ”

  1. David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict” because ______ .

  A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt B. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time C. he couldn’t stand a clean appearance D. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes 【解析】选 B。 2. The reason why David Smith wears casual clothes now is that ______ .

  A. they make him feel at ease when working B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes C. he looks handsome in casual clothes D. he no longer works for any company 【解析】选A。 从第一段最后一句话“I’m working harder than ever, ” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable. ” 可找到答案。 3. Which of the following statements CANNOT be inferred from the passage?

  A. All the employers in the U.

  S.

show their approval for casual office wear.

  B. Comfortable clothes increase employees’ productivity.

  C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.

  D. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.

【解析】选A。 Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.

4. According to this passage,

which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.

  B. “Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favor from employers.

  C. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.

  D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.

从第二段最后一句“What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing. ” 可以作出正确判断。 (B)

One fine afternoon I was walking along the Fifth Avenue,

when I remembered that I should buy a pair of socks.

I followed him to the rear of the shop,

and he began to haul down from the shelves box after box,

displaying their contents for my pleasure.

85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employees’ morale(心境,士气).

  S.

The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a

whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest (害虫)problems.

1. Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are _________ .

  A. sprayed with pesticides B. facing an infrared scanner C. in poor physical condition D. exposed to excessive sun rays 【解析】选C。 . . an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running‘fevers’”,说明植物在发“高烧”,也就是说,“身体状况”不佳时才会散发热,所以选项C符合题意。

  2. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to __________ .

  A. estimate the damage to the crops B. measure the size of the affected area C. draw a color-coded map D. locate the problem area 【解析】选D。 . . showing where plants were running ‘fevers’. Farmers could then spot-spray,. . . ”说明目的是确定有问题的区域,以使农民有针对性地喷杀虫剂。显然,选项D(确定有问题的地域)为最佳选项。 3. Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by __________.

  A. resorting to spot-spraying B. consulting infrared scanning experts C. transforming poisoned rain D. detecting crop problems at an early stage 【解析】选A。 依据文章第二段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. ”(采取点喷,农民们可以节省平时用量的50%至70%的杀虫剂),选项A符合题意。 4. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties— ________.

  A. the lack of official support B. its high cost C. the lack of financial support D. its failure to help increase production

依据文章第三段的“The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984,after only three years. ”从该句提供的信息同样可以反推出10年前的情形,所以选项C正确。 Ⅲ. 句式填空 1.
