Amelia Earhart’s (1897~1937) childhood was not the typical girl’s.She liked nothing better than to explore the banks of the Missouri River, where she climbed trees and hunted rats with her rifle (步枪).She also built her own roller coaster (过山车).

The exciting life of the American aviation (航空) pioneer is dramatized in the movie Amelia, which is due to come out on October 23.

After Earhart paid a pilot $1 to take her up for a short fly in his plane, aviation became her love and career.

As she later explained,“Never do things others can do and will do,if there are things others cannot do or will not do.”

Earhart found herself a flying teacher and started to learn to fly.She took all sorts of jobs to pay for the lessons and to buy a second-hand plane on her 24th birthday.

In 1932,Earhart flew solo (单独地) across the Atlantic. She became the first woman to make the solo crossing. She also made a flying suit for women and went on to design other clothes for women who led active lives.“Now and then women should do for themselves what men have already done—occasionally what men have not done—thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action,” she said.

When she was nearly 40,Earhart was ready for a final challenge—to be the first woman to fly around the world. However,in the flight, she and her navigator (领航员) disappeared in bad weather.

Earhart will be forever remembered as a brave pioneer for both aviation and for women.

  Organizing Yourself

Many new students find it hard to do all the study that has to be done;they find themselves putting off reading assignment, jumping from one subject to another and rarely being quite certain what they are trying to do during a particular study session. The best way to overcome these difficulties and to start studying efficiently is to plan your time and organize your work.Let us suppose that you have 15 hours per week of classes and that you decide to allow yourself a 40-hour working week (a reasonable figure, leaving you 70 waking hours for other activities).

You now have to decide how to divide the remaining 25 hours of private study.Naturally the decisions you make will change from week to week according to what essays have to be written and what reading has to be done. Many people find it helpful to draw up each week a seven-day timetable showing the occasions on which they will be working privately and the particular subjects that will be studying on each occasion.By checking such a plan at times during the week, you can see what you have done and what you have still to do:the whole plan becomes more manageable. There are a number of places where you can study college library, public library, home, empty classrooms,on bus or train and each has several obvious advantages and disadvantages. The college library is least busy in the evening,on Wednesday afternoon, and all day Friday and Saturday.

When you are deciding where to study, keep the following suggestions in mind:

1.Try to study always in the same place. After a while the familiar surroundings will help you to switch into the right frame of mind as soon as you sit down.

2.Find somewhere with as few distractions as possible.

3.Make sure that your study place has a good light and is warm (but not hot) and well aired.

54.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.Plan your time and organize your work.

  B.Overcome your difficulties.

C.Be certain what you can do.

D.Find a quiet place for study.

55.A student’s organization of his work will need to change according to________.

A.how many hours he is awake

  B.how many subjects are required

  C.how many lectures he misses

D.what he has to write and read that week

56.A student is advised to make a weekly plan and to check it from time to time in order to________.

A.see whether he has calculated it properly

B.see what day of the week is

C.see what work still needs doing

D.see how he feels at the whole week

57.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a place where you can study?

  A.The bus.

  B.The train.

  C.Home.

  D.A public house.

  Go ahead,talk to your dog.

As many a dog owner will prove, our furry friends are listening. Now,for the doubters, there is scientific proof that they understand much of what they hear.A border collie called Rico can fetch at least 200 objects by name, researchers in Germany say.The dog also appears to learn words for new objects as easily as a 3-year-old child would. Its word-learning skill is as good as that of a parrot or chimpanzee.

In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them randomly into 20 sets of 10 objects each. The dog waited with one of his owners in one room, while an experimenter put a set of 10 objects into another room. Then, the owner told the dog to fetch one of the items. The dog had to go to the other room and bring the object back

In four trials,Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right.Because the dog couldn’t see anyone to get visual clues about what to bring back, the scientists concluded that he must understand the meanings of certain words.

In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names he already knew. The dog’s owner then told him to fetch the object, using a word Rico had never heard.

In 7 out of 10 trials,Rico picked the right object, suggesting that he figured out the answer by process of elimination.A month later,he remembered half of the new names, which further impressed the researchers.

Rico is probably smarter than the average dog,the scientists say.For one thing,he’s a border collie,a breed known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to retrieve toys by their names since he was 9 months old.

It’s hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say.Even if they do,they can’t talk back.Still,it wouldn’t hurt to sweet-talk your pup every now and then. You might just get a big,wet kiss in return!

  58.It is implied that________.

A.Rico is probably cleverer than the average dog

B.Only a few dogs can talk back to its owner

C.if a chimpanzee is trained,it can also recognize the names of objects

  D.All dogs can understand words

59.How long is it since Rico’s owner began to train him?

  A.nine months

  B.3 years.

  C.over nine years.

  D.more than eight years.

60.Rico can do all the following except________.

A.understanding the meanings of certain words

B.picking the right object by process of elimination

C.remembering all of the new names he learned

  D.retrieving toys by their names

  61.

We all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive dinner,or take out a loan for the car we can’t afford. It might feel great at the time but hasty (匆忙的) spending hurts a lot later on.Enjoy life’s simple pleasures and save as much as you can.Expensive things don’t create lasting happiness.Careful spending will bring you greater enjoyment in the long run.

  62.

To be happy we need continuous growth. The best way to grow is lifelong education. This doesn’t mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend 2 hours reading every day.Self education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas.

  63.

Suppose you had everything you wanted.Would you be happy without anyone to share it with? The personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives.Don’t forget about them.Taking the time to develop and enjoy personal relationships is important to long-term happiness.

  64.

Even if your life isn’t perfect, you can always build towards a goal. The best way to do this is working towards a goal.We can’t control everything about our lives, but working towards a goal gives us something positive to focus on and lays the foundation for future success. No matter what your passion is,get out there and start doing something.

  65.

You only get one body.Once it’s been ruined there isn’t much you can do about it.Exercise to keep the body working well.Avoid eating too much of damaging substances and unhealthy foods. It may feel terrible at the time but enjoying good health in your later years is worth the sacrifice.

  16.D 17.C 18.A 19.D 20.B 21.A

  22.C 23.C 24.B 25.D

  28.A 根据learn from them,forget about them,and move on以及下句的these mistakes可知,如果我们犯了错误(mistakes),我们应该吸取教训、忘记错误,继续(我们的生活)。

  30.B bad lives和mistakes之间为因果关系,故选用because of。

32.D 这里指代if you run a business and you lose a ton of money这一处境(situation)。

  33.A

If you’re afraid to fail,再结合常识可知,如果我们害怕失败,那么我们会失去成功的机会。

39.C 后句的lack the motivation和前句中的the drive to start构成转折对比关系。

40.B 根据下文中may have a bad time at present可知,很多人无法善始善终的原因是无法克服困难(difficulties)。

  41.D 坚持的人暂时会遇到困难,但是他们会笑到最后(have the last laugh)。

43.C 根据harvesting the fruits of your labor可知,你失败之后又取得成功,因而变得富有(wealthy)。

45.D 结合adjust to the present situation以及文章第一句中的flexible可知,永恒的只有改变(change)。

从文章第二段的“...dramatized in the movie Amelia,which is due to...”

从全文可知,这是介绍Amelia Earhart传奇人生的一篇文章,不可能出现在a booklet(小册子),a guidebook(旅游手册),an advertisement(广告)中,所以选B项。

由Saxon Youth Club部分的“try their hand at cooking at Saxon Youth Club”可以看出C项正确。

题干关键词为“the new play”,因此答案应该在Houghton Mill里找,由“Family £20.”

由Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey部分的“Farmland Games”以及“each child should be accompanied by an adult”可知答案。

Get up close to prehistoric creatures via some great hands-on exhibits!和Watch out for monsters lurking around every ember.

根据第一段“The best way to overcome these difficulties and to start studying efficiently is to plan your time and organize your work.”

根据第二段第二句“Naturally the decisions you make will change from week to week according to what essays have to be written and what reading has to be done.”

根据第二段第三句:“Many people find it helpful to draw up each week a seven-day timetable showing the occasions on which they will be working privately and the particular subjects that will be studying on each occasion.”

  Dear Ms Wang,

I’m Li Ming. Two years ago,I received your letter and schooling fees.I’m very grateful for your kindness and generosity.

Words seem to fail me when I try once more to express my thanks to you,and I’ll keep my promise and not let you down.

  Yours sincerely,
