If this 13-year-old American boy succeeds in climbing Mount Everest,he has modest ambitions—pick a small piece of rock from the top as a memento (纪念品) and wear it in a necklace.

“It is something for myself to say ‘this is a rock from the top’,”Jordan Romero from California, told reporters in Kathmandu. He left for the mountain on Sunday.

If he succeeds,Romero will become the youngest climber to climb the 8,850 meters Everest Summit.Currently a 16-year-old Nepali boy,Temba Tsheri Sherpa, holds the record of being the world’s youngest climber of Mount Everest.

But Romero, sitting over lunch with his climbing father and stepmother in Kathmandu’s tourist district of Thamel, said he was not after setting climbing records.

Romero said Mount Qomolangma, that runs across Nepal-China border, was part of his goal to climb the highest mountains on all seven continents.

“It is just a goal,” he said confidently.“If I don’t succeed I am okay.I will try again.”

Romero has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mount McKinley in Alaska among others.

Romero’s father Paul said the boy was ready to take on the climb and understood the risk of climbing the giant mountain.

“I know it requires a lot of patience.I will remain patient.I want to stay safe and make right choice,” Romero said of his climb using the northeast ridge (山脊) route on the Chinese side of the mountain.

Over 4,000 climbers have reached the top of Mount Qomolangma since it was first climbed by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953.Romero said he wanted to climb the highest mountains in all 50 states in the US next.“It does not need to be after Qomolangma and could be in between.”

Far more people in India have access to a mobile phone than to a toilet, according to a UN study.

India’s mobile users totaled 563.73 million at the last count, enough to serve nearly half of the country’s population.

But just 366 million people—around a third of the population—had access to proper sanitation (卫生设施) in 2008,said the study published by the UN University,a UN think-tank.

“It is a tragic irony (讽刺) to think in India,a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones,so many people cannot afford the basic necessity and quality of a toilet,” said UN University director Zafar Adeel.

Adeel heads the UN University’s Institute for Water,Environment and Health, based in the Canadian city of Hamilton, which prepared the report.

Worldwide,an estimated 358 billion dollars is needed between now and 2015 to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halving the proportion of people with inadequate (不充分的) sanitation from 2000 levels.

“Proper sanitation could do more to save lives, especially those of young people, improve health and help pull India and other countries in similar circumstances out of poverty than any alternative investment,” Adeel said.

Poor sanitation is a major contributor to water-borne diseases (水传播疾病),which in the past three years alone killed an estimated 4.5 million children under the age of five worldwide, according to the study.

The report gave a rough cost of 300 dollars to build a toilet, including labour, and materials. The world could expect a return of up to 34 dollars for every dollar spent on sanitation through improved productivity and reduced poverty and health costs, said Adeel. He said improving sanitation was an economic and humanitarian opportunity of historic proportions.

I remember that when I was in my teens,I used to go against many of the Dos and Don’ts my parents taught me.For example, when I kept playing jazz records on the player,my father would think of such music as making noise and replace

them with disks of classical music that I always considered extremely dull.

My mom and dad were also very particular about the friends I went out with, always saying that “One rotten (腐烂) apple could ruin a whole barrel of apples”.When I insisted on sleeping with my pet dog, they immediately said NO because they thought that I would be bitten by fleas (跳蚤).

These are just a few examples of many of the things that I thought my parents were unreasonable about.Today, however,I am a father of a boy of sixteen, and I find that I,too,am pressuring my son with a lot of rules that he seems to find hard to accept. The other day,I noticed that my son’s hair was too long,so I told him to go to the barber’s and get it cut short.Usually,he is fairly obedient, but this time he put_his_foot_down.“What’s wrong with my long hair?I don’t think you have the right to order me to cut it short, even if you’re my father!”

When I was a boy,if I had spoken in such a way to my father,he would have taught me a good lesson. But now we are living in a world with more freedom. My son’s insistence on wearing his long hair was only an example of the generation gap that existed between us.So I tried to be more understanding and now he still wears his long hair.

B.no generation gap exists between parents and children

We all know that certain oils are healthier than others, but your oil health goes beyond just the type. The health of your oil can be related to how you use it too.

Each type of oil has what is called a “smoke point”.The smoke point is the specific temperature at which the oil starts to break down,or in more technical terms, its molecular structure begins to change. These molecular changes result in changes in flavor,as well as changes in nutritional value—specifically, the nutritional value of the oil starts to reduce, changing what once may have been considered an especially healthy oil, like olive, into one that is unhealthy.

The higher an oil’s smoke point is,the higher the temperature of the oil can be.As a result, each type of oil should be used for the cooking method that is most appropriate to its individual smoke point and heat tolerance. Here is a quick guide for the next time you reach for your favorite oil.

Heat During Cooking Oil Best Use

  Low to

Moderate Coconut Baking (low heat)Light Sauting Pressure

  Cooking Salads

  Corn

  Olive

  Peanut

  Sesame

  Walnut

  Medium Heat Macadamia Nut Baking

  Sauting

  Stir-Frying

  Safflower

  High Heat Grape-seed Deep Browning

  Deep-Frying

  Sunflower

  Soybean/Soy

Note that the above table represents oils that are refined (精炼的).Most oils we buy are refined.Refined oils tend to have much higher smoke points than when they are unrefined. They also differ in nutrition and flavor.Unrefined oils are more nutritious and they tend to be much richer in flavor.

When it comes to extremely high heat cooking, always choose oils which are refined.

58.What determines whether an oil is healthy or not?

  A.Whether it’s refined or not.

  B.Its smoke point.

  C.Its molecule.

  D.How you use it.

59.Which of the following might be a better choice to make a healthy salad?

  A.Refined walnut oil.

  B.Safflower oil.

  C.Unrefined olive oil.

  D.Sunflower oil.

60.Healthy oil can become unhealthy if________ according to the passage.

A.you keep it for too long

B.it is heated well beyond its smoke point

  C.it is refined

  D.its flavor is changed

  61.

Nowadays, millions of people misuse and even overuse pain medications and other drugs.Research by the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA,1999) shows that around 2% of the population over age 12 were using drugs non-medically.

  62.

NIDA views medications as a powerful force for good in the contemporary world. They reduce and remove pain for millions of people suffering from illness and disease. They make it possible for doctors to perform complicated surgery to save lives. Many people afflicted by serious medical conditions are able to control their symptoms and become active, contributing citizens.NIDA points out that most individuals who take these drugs use them in a responsible.

  63.

Nevertheless, overuse of drugs such as opium, central nervous system (CNS) depressants and stimulants does lead to harmful reliance in some people and is therefore becoming a serious public health concern.Although this abuse affects many people worldwide, particular trends of concern to the medical profession in the US appear among older adults, teenagers and women.

  64.

Though it may be a surprise to many, the misuse of medications may be the most common form of drug abuse among the elderly.Dr Kenneth Schrader of Duke University,North Carolina states that although the elderly represent about 13% of the US population, those aged 65 and over account for the consumption of one third of all drugs.People in this age group use medications roughly three times more than the general population and have poorer compliance with instruction for use.In another study of elderly patients admitted to treatment programs,70% were women who had overused medicines.

  65.

Unfortunately, this trend among women does not only affect those aged over 65.In general, among women and men who are using either an anti-anxiety drug or a sedative, women are twice as likely to become addicted. In addition, statistics compiled for 12~17 year olds show that teenage girls are more likely than teenage boys to begin overusing psychotherapeutic medication such as painkillers, tranquillizers, stimulants and sedatives.

  1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C 5.A 6.B 7.F 8.A

  9.G 10.E

Good for you! 好样的!”Oh come on! 拜托!”You can’t be serious!意为“你不是认真的吧!”You must be joking!

congratulations to sb.for/on sth.

put out意为“出版”时,为及物动词短语;come out意为“出版”时,为不及物动词短语;turn out意为“证明是”;go out意为“出去,熄灭”。

  24.A ban可以是可数名词,表示“禁令;禁止”,如a ban on... 第二空中缺少谓语,talking on the mobile phone与ban之间是被动关系,故用is banned。

I couldn’t agree more意为“我非常同意”;That’s right“对”和With pleasure很乐意效劳,不合语境,故选C项。
