Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged,“Barbara,be enthusiastic!Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”
How right they were!Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers,“I can do it!” when others shout,“No,you can’t.”
It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock,a geneticist (遗传学家) who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine,to be generally accepted.Yet she didn’t let_up on her experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
Author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote,“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Enthusiastic people also love what they do,regardless of money or title or power. If we connot do what we love as a fulltime career,we can treat it as a part-time interest, like the head of state who paints, the nun (修女) who runs marathons, and the official who handcrafts (手工制作) furniture.
We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.
We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses—finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned (蜡笔的) picture of a six-year-old,the enchanging, beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes,a lift in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.
41.What can be the best title of this passage?

D.No pains,no gains
42.What conclusion does the writer draw through the experience of finding a job?
A.Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.
B.Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
C.We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”.
D.Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
43.Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?
A.No one can achieve great success without enthusiasm.
B.Enthusiasm will take a person further than any amount of his experience.
C.We should make great efforts to do the thing that can be done instead of regretting for the past.
D.Barbara McClintock was generally accepted many years before she won the Nobel Prize.
44.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “let up”?
A.continue
B.make less effort
C.make great effort
D.stop

1.C suggest作“建议”解,后面的宾语从句中的谓语动词用“should+动词原形”,should可以省略;be rich in富含……。
be determined never/not to do决心不……,表示心理状态。
3.D make up sth.编造。look sth.up查阅,查检;take up sth.
8.B even if/though即使;as if好像;if only但愿。
pretend to be doing为假装正在干某事,符合句意。
12.A set off the alarm启动了警报器。set off出发,引爆,开动,启动;set out出发,开始着手;give away泄露,捐献;give off放出(光、烟、气味等)。
16.To our astonishment, the president was murdered.
17.The old woman died of grief soon after her husband’s death.
18.Although Albert Einstein was a world-famous scientist,yet he lived a simple life.

21.A take修、攻读。
23.A shocked吃惊的。
27.B reason with与……
作者第一次认识到thorough(透彻的)这一词的真正含义。
32.B went
33.A grade分数。
34.A scholarship奖学金。
help oneself
to sth.
happen to do碰巧做;prove to be+n./adj.证明做;pretend to do假装做;seem to do似乎做。
work sth.out计算出、处理;work sb.over拷问;work on sth.做某事;work sth.off尽力做某事。
根据第二段“Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends”这是作者从寻找工作的经历中悟出来的人生真谛。
43.D 细节题。根据第四段“It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock...to be generally accepted”可知选D项。
根据最后一段的尾句“It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes,a lift in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls”可知作者认为是充满热情的这种爱才使得我们的生活变得有意义。
