  .阅读理解

Where we live,on the Eastern shore of Maryland, the gentle waters run in and out like fingers slimming at the tips.

The Canada geese know this place,as do the white swans and the ducks. In the autumn, they come home for the winter.Once or twice each year, snow and frozen rain move into the area. When this happens,if the river is at its narrowest, there is a freeze which hardens the water to ice.One morning,a friend of mine set thebreakfast table beside the huge window, whichoverlooked the Tred Avon River.Suddenly she leaned

forward and cried out,“There is a goose out there.”

We saw the figure of a large Canada goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen to the ice.

Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They floated from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice.My friend was on her feet now, with one unbelieving hand against her mouth. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared what life he still had might be pecked(啄)out

  by those great swan bills.

Instead, those bills began to work on the ice.The long necks were lifted and curved down, again and again. It went on for a long time.At last, the goose's head lifted. Its body pulled. Then the goose was free and standing on the ice.And the swans stood in the air watching. Then,as if he had cried,“I cannot fly”,four of the swans came down around him.Their powerful beaks chipped off the ice held in the feathers.Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go,and moved slowly into the sky.

This is a true story.I just think of it in the bad moments, and from it comes only one hopeful question:“If so for birds, why not for man?”

1.What would be the best title for the passage?

  A.Why not for man

  B.Graceful swans

  答案:B

3.At first the author's friend was worried that .

A.the swans would not help the Canada goose

B.the swans would have the same fate with the Canada goose

C.the Canada goose wouldn't identify with the swans

D.the swans would peck the Canada goose to death

  解析:细节理解题。由倒数第三段最后一句话可以看出,作者的朋友担心这群天鹅会用它们巨大的喙把这只可怜的鹅啄死。

  答案:D

4.What did the swans do when they saw the Canada goose couldn't fly?

A.They chipped off the ice held in the feathers.

B.They waited patiently for the ice held in the feathers to melt.

C.They came down and lifted it up to the sky together.

D.They stayed with it and protected it.

  解析:细节理解题。由倒数第二段的倒数第二句话可直接看出A项正确。

  答案:A

  .任务型阅读/任务型读写

  阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。

  注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the

  Earth.

On 17 July, a piece, four kilometres wide, enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the seabed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, one kilometre high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes.Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperature around the world falls to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food.A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs(恐龙) were on the Earth for over 160 million years. 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?
